I'd say "My wife" too and there's nothing possessive about that "My".

"The wife" sounds farming community in the 1920s or 1930s to me.

I bet yoose thinks of that painting of the old woman and the old man
posing on the farm with a pitchfork (can't remember the artist or name
of the painting)

I haven't watched that show in a couple of years. I hadn't heard the
"old man" died.

It also depends on the name. Dave Smith is basically anonymous.

I saw a woman on the Antiques Roadshow recently who brought in a rather
small painting by Grant Wood, she'd heard of American Gothic but didn't
know it was the same artist. She nearly fell over when they told her
what it was worth. LOL

None of them are exactly svelte. Chumlee comes across as an idiot but
I'll bet he's laughing all the way to the bank.

Some of us do. Who knows if Bruce is his real name? His online
name/nym is certainly not consistent. Oh dear, did I mention
nymshifting again? My bad.

I think he's worth quite a bit actually, but he has had some problems with
the law. I don't care much for his affect, but I do enjoy the show and the
objects people bring in.

I have no idea why you're so angry. I don't doubt that Dave Smith is
your real name. I'm just saying there are many people with your name.
You could organise the Dave Smith Olympics, where all the participants
are called Dave Smith.

Oh, in that case, let me repeat myself:

"I have no idea why you're so angry. I don't doubt that Dave Smith is
your real name. I'm just saying there are many people with your name.
You could organise the Dave Smith Olympics, where all the participants
are called Dave Smith."

Don't worry. Bruce is my first name and Druce is my last name.

I don't get it. You hate Guy Fieri and you watch Pawn Stars? There
you have 4 or 5 shyster slobs compared to one guy.
those guys have a bunch of 'experts' on the payroll to give lowball
appraisals. The mind boggles.

Bruce is a very common name in Australia but I doubt it is in the
Netherlands.

Growing up in Brooklyn the next door neighbor kid's name was Terresa
Cordiano, everyone called her Terry. She had a very nice ass and wide
hips but not much boobs. Eventually she married a cop and was always
pregnant, I think she had five kids, maybe six, one right after the
other, Terry was built to be a baby machine. Naturally him being a
cop they moved to Staten Island. A lot of NYC cops live on Staten
Island, a good place to hide. A lot of organized crime dons live
there too, the cops don't mess with them or they'd disappear, c-menta
shooze off the Varrazzano.

I use my real first name.

I don't but I use a nickname I've had since childhood. We attempted a (very
small) version of Hamlet in school. Guess which character I played <g>
Oddly enough it stuck throughout my school years)

The objects they bring in are the real reason to watch the show.

I said I haven't watched it in a couple of years. At least I didn't
have to watch them eat (very often). I was more interested in the
objects people were bringing in to sell or pawn than the people who run
the shop.

Just about the only reason, I don't think any of them are great showmen.

Same thing with Antique Road Show, interesting what people bring to show.

Apples vs oranges, Janet B.

I watch it all the time. I love that show. It's "Antique Road
Show" with personalities thrown in. And it's not about the money
exchanged. This pawn shop specializes in antiques and
collectibles. Interesting to learn about the items, not what they
are bought and sold for.

I've never watched either of those shows, in fact I never heard of
them until seeing their mention here. However I enjoy the local
estate auctions held near where I live. I find them quite
entertaining and ocasionally I bid on something and sometimes was
fortunate to bring the items home. I enjoy the real thing, I'm
certain those TV productions are fake. I've been to enough auctions
to know that often a pair of bidders are in personal competion so they
bid up far more than some item is worth, they simply don't want the
other to win yet have no use for the item. Then what they do is have
the item put up for auction again and take a big loss. I've
sucessfully bid on some fine antique furnishings.
I enjoy this auction a lot:

I got into a bit of a bidding war on a painting at a summer camp
bursary fund auction. We had all had a few drinks before the auction,
and I did not care for the guy who was bidding against me. The artist
was a friend, a well known American portrait artist. He had spent some
of his vacation there painting landscapes. I stupidly bid up over
$1000, mainly because I didn't want the other guy to get it, but then
pushed it up to the point where he was likely to make one final bid, I
offered $1450 and he went $1500. I stopped, and he paid a lot more than
it was worth.

The artist approached me later and expressed his appreciation for the
interest I had shown in his painting. He told me he had done two
paintings of the same scene and had had a hard time deciding which one
to donate for the auction. He offered me the second one. He said it was
probably worth about $300 but I could pay the bursary find whatever I
wanted for it and that he would never know, so don't worry about it. So
I picked up nice painting for $300. The prick lawyer may have felt quite
smug about having successfully bested me in a bidding war, but I walked
away with an equal value painting for 1/5 what he had paid.

Then what they do is have
