Reigning champion Joey Chestnut eats two hot dogs at a time during the men's competition of the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, Wednesday, July 4, 2018, in New York's Coney Island. The defending champion broke his own world record by eating 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer) NEW YORK €” Joey "Jaws" Chestnut extended his reign as champion eater at the Nathan's Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest Wednesday, downing a record 74 wieners and buns in 10 minutes to take home the coveted Mustard Belt for an 11th time. Miki Sudo held onto her title as the top woman's competitor at the annual Brooklyn eat-off, chomping 37 franks and buns to take home the top prize for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year. |

That's an interesting technique they're using. I'm more an old school kind of guy. This allows me to eat half a dog. I don't believe that I could eat a whole one. What would be more fun would be a hot dog eating contest with guys that have a hard time eating hot dogs. |

> Competitive eating is big in Japan, too. That's true. Some Japanese compete even that contest. That said, Jill was wrong about this contest not being representative of the US. This particular contest is all USA. Held each year on the 4th of July at Coney Island in NYC. Doesn't get any more USA than that. No need to diss it though. It's pure entertainment, no educational value. Still, I would NEVER believe that someone could eat 74 hotdogs and buns in only 10 minutes. That's insane. I doubt I could even eat 8 dogs and buns in an hour. 74 in 10 minutes? Seeing is believing. |

This was in the '60s, I don't kno if those ssigns ae still there... I never did stop. When I was a kid Sid's Lunceonette advertized a Belly Buster, a 48 ounce egg cream, finish one in 30 minutes and it's free. Manners are cultural. George Bernard Shaw put it best: €śBRITANNUS (shocked). Caesar: this is not proper. THEODOTUS (outraged). How! CAESAR (recovering his self-possession). Pardon him. Theodotus: he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.€ť Cindy Hamilton |
