Maybe the difference is if you don't drink alcohol, you'll wish you were.

I have to go to a funeral today and a wedding tomorrow. I'll let you know if
anything exciting happens.

My guess is that the funeral will be fairly uneventful. The wedding could
get interesting. The groom is a Brit. He'll probably bring his mum along.
She's a lovely woman but I'm expecting some surprises. Hee hee.

My wife's aunts are strong women but most of their kids are dying off
tragically. Alcohol, cancer, suicide. It's a very strange thing. These women
have to be strong to bear it. Perhaps the family is cursed.

Alcohol - can't live with it, can't live without it. My prediction is that alcohol consumption is going to go sky-high in the next 20 years.

It has been with us for thousands of years and some report is not going
to make it go away. My father was an alcoholic so I've seen the harm it
can do. But, I don't see harm in the occasional drink if you can handle
it. In a typical week I may have one on five of the days, I cannot see
why anyone would intentionally get drunk, yet they do.

I agree with you completely. Drinking alcohol is not going to go away. In fact, it's going to get very, very, popular in the near future. Man has had a long relationship with fermentation and fermented foods. Unfortunately, our livers have not been able to keep up. It's going to take several hundred thousand years for our organs to adapt. Of course, that's not going to do us any good.

My guess is that in a few years, we'll be able to grow new livers in labs and transplant them into thirsty folks that just can't get enough booze. Our universal health plans in the future should allow everybody 2 free livers. You get to blow the first two but the third would be the last one you're going to get. I think that's a fair plan that we all can live with.

You may want to rethink that statement. There will be a "Hurricane
Lane" support group where you live soon. There almost has to be one for
Kilauea right now.

Support groups are mostly a white culture thing. People that live on a small rock tend to not worry much about things not under their ability to do anything about. That's just how islanders all over the world tend to think. Why is that? I do not know. Additionally, expressing their feelings is not something Asians feel comfortable with. Standing in front of others and describing their pain is pretty atypically Asian.

I'm sure that there are cancer support groups on this island. I know there are many AA groups here. Maybe there are nuclear missile attack support groups too. Hurricane Lane and Kilauea volcano support groups? Probably not. We already understand that we are held at the whims of nature and Madame Pele.

My wife's niece and kids were visiting and one thing that I got to say about that is haoles sure say "I love you" a lot! Why is that so?

I "think" I just hit your age level today. I "thought" I was saying
that you and I will live forever. I "can't" form a coherent sentence.
Hey, It was my birthday. Everyone should give me a break.
You probably aren't the one that turned 72 a couple of months ago, but
someone here did. Janet Wilder would be 72 as well.

Hope you had a good one, Leo.
Today is my step daughter's 42nd Bd. Need to write her next. She
lives in the SF Bay area and is doing very well. She probably
feels old today but....if she only knew how young that really is
compared to all us older survivors.

Not sure when that started, but many people say that when hanging up the
phone instead of a simple goodbye. When you say it so easy and often
like that is dilutes the meaning.

Maybe. I say "I love you" to my husband 50 times a day. It still feels
like the first time I said it.

Lots of support groups in Hawaii and this was 2010, I'm sure there are a lot
more now, surely not just for people of the "white culture."

Maybe. I say "I love you" to my husband 50 times a day. It still feels
like the first time I said it.

Yes, I turned 72 in June. I very much admired Janet and miss her. Happy
Birthday, hope it's a good one!

Asians have a hard time saying stuff like that. The good news is that when they say it, they really mean it.

My wife and her siblings say that to each other at the end of phone conversations. That makes sense. My niece's daughter would say it to her husband several times during a phone call. It made her husband sound like a guy that needed a lot of reassurances. OTOH, there was a big hurricane barreling down towards her and their 1 year old baby so they were under a lot of pressure. He wanted to fly over here. Now that was a singularly bad idea!
