Default How do they make "Liquid Smoke"?

Sold in most grocery stores. "Liquid Smoke". It adds a wonderful flavor
to almost anything. It says it's natural. But how do they make it?
I cant imagine smoking water, like you can smoke a piece of meat.
Does anyone know?

Google is your friend.

Liquid smoke really is made from smoke. Chips or sawdust from hardwoods such as hickory or mesquite are burned at high temperatures, and particles of the smoke are collected in condensers. The resulting liquid is concentrated down for a stronger flavor.

Default How do they make "Liquid Smoke"?

I emailed them years ago. They had a sample offer.
My email asked for a bunch because i was a hiker and there was a burn ban. The little 0.5 oz vials were perfect.
I still have some, that is how i know the size. They sent me a shitload. Iirc 30 bo or so.
There are multiple flavors.

Yes, I really did want to know, and it's a perfectly legitimate question
for a cooking group. I also have a bit of concern about it, since it
appears to be like cresote. But I have to admit that I have never been
to any newsgroup with as many assholes as there are on this one.

Thanks to those of you who added some useful content. I did jot down the
weblink to the Wiki article. I do not have access to the web, unless I
go to a WIFI. I will have to wait till I get to one. The newsgroups used
to help people long before the web existed, but those days are long
gone. I guess the newsgroups are just for the most rude assholes to
relieve their mental illnesses now.

They're not all assholes here, but it's a strange collection of people
to say the least.

Yes, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. I think "normal" people have
moved on to web based forums, such as Facebook.

It's a fairly simple process. Wood is heated to produce smoke. The wood smoke is condensed to produce a liquid from the products of combustion. My guess is that liquid is then diluted with water to produce liquid smoke.

My friend's 62 Ford Falcon's rear seat caught on fire and he just ripped out the seat and back cushion. Sometimes I'd have to ride on the bare sheet-metal on the back. That was fun. The whole car however, smelled like a smokehouse. This tells me that liquid smoke could probably be made from practically anything that burns. My guess is that you could make the stuff from vintage car seats and it would be right tasty. Well that's cool.

Liquid smoke is on the FDA's Generally Regarded As Safe list so I guess is depends on whether or not you trust the FDA. Liquid smoke has some antimicrobial properties which makes sense since smoking has been used to preserve foods for centuries. I wouldn't worry about it but then, I don't worry about most things.

In my awesome opinion, the cars of the post-war era to the 1970's had seat cushions that produced the best liquid smoke.
