First times I tried, seems they did not cook well enough.
Should I place the fries/tots on the top rack or the bottom rack? What setting (Bake, Broil, Toast, Convection)? Thanks. |

Spay with vegetable oil (such as pas Pam spray) then into toaster oven on convection toast setting (both upper and lower elements) at its highest temperature. If no middle rack position, then put potatoes on a rack in a tray. The "flat tots" cook better than the cylindrical tots in the oven. I do these all the time. French fries never come out as well as the tots. -sw |

We bought ours because nuked tater tots were yucky , the toaster oven scorched them and left them frozen inside , and while the Big Oven did a great job , we're runnin' that stove on a 20 (or 30) pound propane bottle until we find a bigger tank we like and would like to conserve gas . JD, we do not know the size or power of your unit so this can't really be answered well. You want about the middle of the toaster oven and 400F is about right for most types. |

I appreciate your detailed other answer, but considering the fact MY cheap convection toaster oven cost less than a small air fryer, difficult to believe the air fryer does not do a better job. It might depend on whether a cheap air fryer gets to higher temperatures more easily or whether its convection is much better. I will search the cheap air fryer reviews for (fries, tater tots). I think fries is what they show in the product for sale pictures. Something else to look for is ease of cleaning, like the toaster oven and the microwave. |

So you automatically assume that what costs more, works better? Consider which one pays more for advertising, which one is made out of mostly plastic, and which is made of mostly metal. Also ask yourself why an air fryer would cost more considering the construction of both the toaster oven and the air fryer (like why do most toaster oven have four elements, while the air fryer only has one). If you have an air fryer that's so great at what it does, why aren't you using it for fries and tots in the first place?!?! -sw |

I've looked over airfryers as suitable here because of the small footprint and light weight so I can store it easily when not in use. It doesnt matter if a convection oven can do better. My needs are simpler and rather pointed to small batch needs. So for those who have one and use it, what model would you recommend if the total volume normally would be about 1 cup or tater tots and such? |

I too am feature driven. I won't say 'more costly means better' but you are going about it with the right questions for your needs. It could be simple cleanup factors make them a little more. |

I want small footprint, light weight and won't often use it for a volume larger than about 1cup tater tot type. While ability to handle 3 cups of product is nice, that also is apt to mean the unit will be too heavy for me to regularily move. Only a tiny amount of >oil too, which is a big plus ![]() The last time I bought any frozen potato products has to be a few decades ago... awful! What's so difficult about peeling a few spuds, dicing into ~1/2" cubes and pan frying... I do that at least once a week for potato omelets but sometimes we just eat them plain as fries. We don't have a toaster oven or an air frier. I owned a toaster oven some fifty years ago, even contained a rotisserie, what a mess to clean. I bought potato tots once long, long ago at a fast food joint, *disgusting*... I'd much rather make potato pancakes (latkes) or potato kugle, or potato nik at home. I don't mind peeling spuds and rather than grate I send them through my meat grinder, makes fast work of a sack o' spuds. Peeling goes fast if you buy large potatoes, we buy "chefs" potatoes at BJs, each potato weighs over a pound... a ten pound sack contains ten potatoes or less. When I want roasted fries I wait until I'm making a roast beef and roast the beef and potatoes at the same time, coat the cut potatoes lightly with oil and place that pan on the top rack where the oven is hotter. |
