Default Ketchup vs Salsa

I read, several yrs ago, that salsa had overtaken ketchup as the number
one condiment. Meh.....

Whether this is true, or not, I still prefer ketchup on my taters. I've
gotta hash-brown jones going on, right now, so I tried both ketchup and
salsa on 'em.

Give me ketchup, every time! I still love pico de gallo on my hot dog,
but I'll take ketchup over salsa on taters, every time (I think it's the
sugar).

Howzabout you?

I'm not big on either one, but I would take ketchup over salsa on most
things, except eggs, I would choose salsa on those.

I don't use ketchup except as a base for barbecue sauce. Salsa only
on Mexican-ish food.

I am probably the exception. I rarely use ketchup. I like it on bacon
sandwiches, on fried egg or Western sandwiches, with meat loaf and with
macaroni and cheese, which limits it to about once a month. A bottle of
ketchup lasts us a long time.

What about pickles? Chutneys? My Indian housemate makes a chutney that's yummy on Naan!

I'm not a ketchup fan except for onion rings. Salsa is for chips, but if
you're going to make me eat one or the other I'll take salsa.

Start your own thread about pickles and chutneys; this one is about ketchup
and salsa.

oh sure, i eat raw garlic often enough it isn't
that hot to me (but it will numb your tongue or
gums if you let a piece of it sit there long
enough) and chili's i can handle ok up to the
Hatch Green chili scale of hot (which isn't that
hot in comparison to many, but it is good enough
for me).

if i get away from the hot sauce long enough i
have to start over, but within a week or two i can
regain my tolerance.

i do still remember my first bowl of green chili
stew in Santa Fe, NM many many years ago. it about
took the top of my head off, but i still loved it.
i wish i could grow them here, but they just don't
get the right flavor. i have to settle for roasted
red peppers which are very good in exchange. those
i can grow.

I'm not particularly fond of either one.

I put ketchup in meatloaf. I eat it with fries. That's it. I sometimes eat
salsa with fries. I eat salsa with a lot of things and use it in a lot of
things. I go through way more salsa than ketchup.

I could argue that Indian pickles and chutneys are not basting sauces.

Thanks for bringing that up - meatloaf. I'm gonna have to make some stuffed with eggplant. My last meatloaf didn't turn out so good. That was stuffed with kim chee. I highly recommend not doing this!

I use at least 10 times more mustard than ketchup... I like cold cuts
so I'm not into ketchup on a liverwust sandwich... not on a balogna
sandwich either, and certainly not on a salami sandwich, and never o9n
tube steak. I use very little ketchup... only on a burger and on
fried spuds. A large bottle of Heinz red can last us two years but I
can go through ten 24 oz bottles of Guldens spicey brown in a year.

Chili sauce beats both ketchup and salsa for me. Wish it was easier to
find.

I like both of those.

I was thinking more along the lines of "chile oil", as in Asian cooking.

Got a recipe, Ed?

Dead simple. Here's one:

<https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2013/02/fuchsia-dunlops-chilli-oil.html>

I've seen more complex ones on the net.

I just use oil and chile flakes.

Just mix them together until it tastes good. Maybe add a squeeze of
lemon. Chili powder or chili flakes depending on what is on hand.

That simple, eh?

Somehow, I thought there might be another ingredient you weren't
listing. I've got Korean chili flakes, ground NM chile powder, Italian
chili flakes, and some "extra hot" Prepared Horseradish (perhaps, not
enough).

Any chile?
