When I opened my microwave oven this morning, there was a rat inside. I
was going to get my husband's rifle, but did not want to make a hole in the microwave. So I just slammed the door again, and turned on the power. I cooked that rat for 10 minutes on high. Not only did that kill it, but it looks like it's well cooked. I just wonder if they are edible? My kids are hungry, so everything I can feed them helps. Ever since the government shutdown, I am no longer able to get WIC food for the kids and our food stamps have beeen cut too. |

However, the government shutdown *is* affecting some folks who get SNAP (food stamps) benefits. The staff isn't there to process new applications or renewals. I saw something on a "local" news station yesterday about food banks ramping up requests for donations to help cover gaps for those who haven't had funds deposited into their SNAP accounts due to the shutdown. The lucky ones have a balance on their accounts and won't have to worry about it until those funds are depleted. But the longer this drags on, the worse it will get. The asshole in the White House is screwing over the whole country with his shenanigans. BTW, I'm pretty sure people have been in situations where they ate rats when they were starving. Prisoner of war camps come to mind. Jill |

One of my uncles was a prisoner in Changhi jail, eating rats was a luxury - he said he never thought about rats in the same way again! Another uncle who was a prisoner in Nagasaki reported the same thing. |

For someone who allegedly was a really smart businessman, the President seems totally
unaware and/or uncaring about what the shutdown is doing to the business world all over the country. I wish I were in a position to help those who may lose their homes because of this. N. |

That's for people who missed the January 14th deadline for their 6-month renewals if they were due to be re-certified for February. Many of the stories we've heard have been skewed and simplified. As it turns out, 99% of SNAP recipients actually got MORE benefits than normal since they distributed February's benefits on January 20th. But once they did that, they are officially out of money. Nobody's SNAP benefits have been cut or missed yet. Only if you didn't file for re-certification in time, then you may miss benefits starting February 1st. -sw |

He's stomping his feet like a kid who is throwing a tantrum. I didn't get my way, so there! Who elected this child? I truly hope he is not invited to make the State of the Union address. Yes, technically he has to be *invited*. It harks back to old Parliamentary procedures in England. The Queen must be invited into the House of Commons before they open Parliament. So must the President be *invited* to give the State of the Union address by the Speaker of the House. I sincerely hope he's not given yet another platform in which to rail about this stupid Wall. > I wish I were in a position to help those who may lose their homes because of this. > > N. > Ditto, N. I've been out of work with no job. These people will have a job and back pay. Much of what you see is hype because it makes for a good news story. For some it will amount to a paid vacation, though the pay will be much later. Houses are not foreclosed because you are a month late. tenants can not be evicted that easily under the circumstances. If someone loses their house it is because they have already been in trouble for a few months. Yes, it will be tough for some, but don't let politics get in the way of reality. |

It happened to my son in the coast guard a year or so ago. The federal government changed their computer system and many pay cheques went awry or did not show up. He went a couple of months without pay and his bank manager was pretty understanding, as far as he could be, but there are limits. By month three there was little understanding. We all helped bail him out and then fortunately he started receiving most of his pay cheque again and it was resolved. So yes, the people owed the money by the gov. workers know, understand, but there is a limit. I am truly sorry for those workers, having seen what my son went through, it will be the same for them, even if, in the end it is resolved. That anyone could do this so randomly is hateful and I fail to understand his callousness. |

I doubt that is the case with a lot of them. Even if the bank or landlord lets them slide on a few payments or offers zero interest loans, the money will still have to be paid back. That will keep them scrambling to catch up on payments when this mess is finally over. Jill |

Yes, I heartily agree with you, it is very squalid behaviours that the US Democratic Party leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are now engaging in....the fact that they refuse to even to come to the table to negotiate to end the US government shut - down is a *real* moral stain upon them - for SHAME...!!! -- Best Greg |

Amazing. You don't have to be left wing to see that Trump's way too immature to run anything, let alone a country. |

You DO let politics get in the way. You only defend the man-child in the White House because you feel he's right-wing. But he doesn't care about Republicans or Democrats. Okay, I see we disagree on this. Of course they'll get back pay. But in the meantime they still need to buy food, pay the electric bill and all the other silly little things people are used to having. The electric company might not be so understanding when half the grid stops paying their bills. Whose paying for the upkeep in the meantime when the bills aren't being paid? Jill |
