I dislike the notion of paying money to shop somewhere. I have shopped
Costco as a guest a few times in the distant past. The store was not
easy to get to, and the experience didn't appeal to me. There's a new
Costco with ample parking a few miles from me now. It still didn't
appeal. My wife has friends who shop there so...
We needed a new TV. "You just gotta get it from Costco!", they said. So
I turned my wife loose with them for a new TV. She bought a membership
and started shopping. "You just gotta get a premium membership!", they
said. "It pays you back!", they said. Now we have a premium membership.

We also have a new Samsung TV which Samsung was too cheap to include
wall mounting bolts with. Samsung suggests a Samsung wall mount for
about another ninety bucks, but we mount the TV above a old fireplace
mantle in a wooden frame, so the TV has to extend. I have a grand
extensible mounting bracket, but I have to get 4 bolts and 4 or 8
washers that aren't readily supplied. But I'm getting there.
Meanwhile, she bought a bunch of frozen salmon filets in a bag, a bunch
of frozen larger uncooked shrimp in a bag and assorted other stuff.
My freezer is chock full of bags now. But I'm getting there.
All I need is four M8-1.25 X 50 mm Phillips machine screws and flat
washers to fit. I can order them from Lowe's or Home Depot, but I got a
guy who is going to provide them. His wife shops at Costco.
Meanwhile, the TV is on its boring stand on a old Maggie radio cabinet.
I can't even go to Costco now without my wife and her super duper card,
and she doesn't like to shop much!

It's rare that Costcos enforces that rule. I have shared three
different memberships with people who do not live at my address, two
of them have been 1000+ miles away.

They only enforce that rule for you.

Harrumph! Household member? I do the shopping "and" I pay the bills.
She gets the entrance pass to the magic kingdom and possibly even a
crown.
I just read the above paragraph to her, and her lame as*ed excuse was
that she didn't think that I'd go there without her. I get no respect,
I tell ya!

(laugh) And now you know why I'M the executive member around here!

Used to be they wouldn't let you in until 11 unless you were an
executive member, I upped my membership for that reason alone.
I make out with the extra cash back.

My wife had issues with Costco and would not go there to pick up her
free card. It was not an issue for the years where I only renewed
occasionally and most of the time the membership was lapsed. However,
over the last year and a half I have been going there about once a
month. I took her with me one time and she discovered the cheeses and
the individually wrapped frozen fish. Now she offers to go to Costco
when she is in the city.

Best to trade them for a new model every few years. They wear out over

Not only that, husbands are totally worthless. I've never wanted
one.

The nearest Costco is too far for me as well and I don't shop in bulk. But
when my TV died 5 or 6 years ago I went with my brother and sister-in-law
to Costco as they have a membership. They got the points and I got a new
TV for a very good price.

I had a card on and off for years. I never used it much. They usually
didn't have the products that I was looking for. Things came in much
larger quantities that I needed. They sometimes had products I wanted
but bundled with different flavours I did not want.

I started going there occasionally with friend who was always extolling
the virtues of many of their products. I succumbed and renewed my
membership. I go there about once a month and have a list of good
products at good prices, like coffee, cheeses, frozen salmon, sole,
rainbow trout and shrimp, toilet paper, paper towels, and a few other
things.

You can get an extra "household" card in your name. For only
$99.95! It pays you back!

Just kidding. It's free. Just remember you have to spend at least
$5K/year ($410/month) at Costco for it to "pay you back" (that's
between both cards, and some purchases are excluded).

Ha, that's funny. You get sucked in! Having said that, I make out
with my executive membership and I also use their Visa, so that's
rewards, too.

I get my executive reward next month, I always cash it rather then
try to spend it there.

I don't find them to be very appealing either and not all things they sell
are good buys but I save enough money on a select few things, that makes it
worth it. And the young ones love going to the food court for cheap eats.

I would not join a club for the same reason, but, I finally saw the
value. On a good month, with a family of four, I could save enough to
pay for the annual membership.

Now, with the two of us, some things have changed. My wife takes a OTC
medication that covers most of the cost, but, other portions are less.
I think we are still going to come out with good savings.

My wife love cheese and we now get most of it from Costco for a fraction
of the prices they charge elsewhere. I think the money we save on
cheese alone more than pays for the card.

By coincidence, my good buddy and his wife were at Costco yesterday and
bought a Cuisinart convection oven/air fryer for $50 less than I paid
for my Phillips air fryer. The savings on that one item will pay for a
couple years of membership.

All that cheese is not healthful for anyone but especially seniors. We
like cheese but the two of us limit ourselves to one stick of Lite
string cheese... we've both already eaten plenty of high fat/salt
pricey cheeses during our lives so we're missing nothing... trading
all that cheese for fresh fruit and veggies is a much better choice...
and we both like dried fruits too; figs, dates, apricots, prunes, all
of them.

Those clubs are certainly compelling. I once bought a Sam's Club membership because I could buy a couple of tires and save enough to pay for the $45 membership. As an added bonus, I could get the tires installed in half an hour. Saving time and money is a very good thing. These days the wait would be over 2 hours and I won't save much. It's easier to just get tires from the shop down the street.

We went to Costco yesterday to get some toilet paper. I was surprised that all the crap we got was $246 dollars. The bill also included $60 to renew our membership. Sometimes, the best way to save money at Costco is to not go to Costco.

I had a dormant Costco card for years. I was in the market for a utility
wagon for my lawn tractor. My neighbour had just got one at Costco. I
scooted down, renewed my membership and got the wagon and I was way
ahead on the game.

My friend and I occasionally go down there by motorcycle. It's a nice
ride there and back, and the limited cargo space limits our purchases.
I can get a case of 6 litres of pineapple juice, a wheel or two of Brie,
some cheddar, a big can of coffee and keep the bill under $50.

That works. Our Costco is just plain nutty. It might be the busiest Costco on the planet. Getting there on a bike, you would be able to get parking easier and it would force you to spend less. Our problem is that it's not that easy to find parking and it's not easy to get out of the joint for under $100. OTOH, Costco is pretty much a part of Hawaiian culture by now. That's the breaks.

There is a Costco about 15 miles from me one way and another one about
30 miles the other way. If I am travelling that far I want to make it
worth while. The parking lots are both stores are usually very busy, but
I have always been able to find a space without too much trouble My
friend and I go for bike rides together, so it is nice to have a
destination. It is only when I go by bike that I keep it under $100.

For most OTC meds Amazon's prices beat the drug stores, only they are
usually in bulk amounts like 500 tablets... I take four of these each
day and they are half the price of Rite Aid:
https://www.amazon.com/Mucinex-Conge...ds=mucinex+500
Why pay twice as much for boxes of 24, each individually packaged in a
plastic bubble which are a PIA to open.
We buy most toiletries at Amazon, they beat the brick & mortars, plus
they carry the old timey brands I like that few brick & mortars carry
(Pinaud).
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...eywords=pinaud
We gave Amazon brand batteries a try, they last as long if not longer
than Duracell and cost a lot less:
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...batteries&th=1
Amazon can have lower prices because the customer is not paying the
outrageous overhead of brick & mortar stores; high rent, high
utilities. high insurance, high taxes, high payroll, pricey shopping
carts, parking lots are very expensive real estate.

I love shopping on line at my convenience and in the comfort of home.
Shopping at brick & mortars give me no pleasure, in fact I find that
kind of shopping very aggrivating... spending a day driving from store
to store and half the time having to *settle* for a different brand, a
different color, an incorrect size, and being subjected to surly know
nothing sales clerks is not pleasurable. We have four flat screen
TVs, all purchased from Amazon, no schlepping, all delivered right to
our door... we love Vizo TVs, best value for price.

When I joined, I got a card for my husband. Why is your wife so mean?

Mostly what I buy there is beef. Much better quality for the same price
as grocery stores around here, and cheaper than the butcher shop.

Next time I need glasses I'll give them a try.

I got glasses from them a few years ago, very good, nice price. I did do the
exam elsewhere, but took the prescription there.

I got my last pair of reading glasses at Walmart. They were a fraction
of what I would have paid at the optometrist. I remember seeing the
promotional sign about lenses being $40. I picked out a cheap pair of
frames and since they were just readers I didn't need any of the extras.
I had expected the price to be per lens, and I was delightfully
surprised to see that it was $40 for both lenses. The last time I got
readers at the optometrist was about 15 years ago and they were $230,
and my Walmart readers were about $120.

I don't use readers. I've been wearing glasses for more than 50
years, for myopia and astigmatism. Now that I'm into presbyopia
as well, I probably should get multifocal lenses, but so far I'm
happy just riding them down on my nose for close work.
