Default Serious coffee drinkers only please......

Nor real sure if this is off topic or not since it kinda does not have
much to do with cooking or recipes, just mainly coffee brands, blends,
and roasts

Here in my opinion are the worst coffee on the planet, let me know if
you agree. In no particular order

Mcdonalds coffee (any fast food coffee for that matter this does not
include diners such as IHOP and waffle house)

foldgers

any brand any type of instant coffee (that stuff should be illegal)

Maxwell House

Nescafe

Hills brothers

Coffee that is just ok (I will drink it if nothing else is around and
if I can find it in whole bean)

Starbucks

Community

Diner coffee (I will not drink it but I have had it in the past)

Eight O'Clock

Lavazzaa

Coffee I like and/or buy regularly

Trader Joes whole bean

Gevalia Whole bean

Brothers Gourmet whole bean (not sure if they are still around)

Please rate the brands that you have tried especially if it is not on
my list.

Â* I blend 2 varieties of 8 O'Clock beans and grind it fresh for every
pot . The blend is half dark italian espresso and half usually columbian
peaks but sometimes just original roast . I very seldom drink coffee out
.. Usually , as my friend Wally says , "You can taste the water thru it." .

Most of the coffee served on this rock is not very good. If I had a restaurant that served breakfast, I'd have a guy whose main job was QC for the coffee. It's that important. I used to have an office next to a fast food restaurant that started serving great coffee. It was wonderful working in a place where great coffee is available anytime you want it. I drank my share of it because I knew it wasn't going to last. Eventually they went to a different supplier or the conditions of the coffee supply chain changed and they started serving plain old regular bad coffee again.

OTOH, I'm going to be drinking coffee even if it's a mediocre brew because the reality is that taste in not the primary concern of mine.

That's because PEOPLE don't know HOW to brew a DECENT Cuppa!

Rules:

1. Get good coffee
2. DO NOT BOIL COFFEE!!!
3. Make GOOD COFFEE STRONG ENUF!!
4. For an EXTRA TREAT, add one good squirt of CBD Oil and one DAB Hershey's SYRUP!

And I call that my Cuppa PLUS! :-)

But you guys grow some of the best. I just got a couple of pounds of
Kona from Cea, who used to post here. www.smithfarms.com

I would think many of you would demand decent coffee, but I guess price
is more important to the restaurants.

That's also why people buy industry meat and pesticide ridden
vegetables from supermarkets. And then they go to RFC to talk about
how to cook that stuff.

That is a very good description. That is how I say McDolands coffee
is, a dark colored water with sugar and cream.

I used to buy the big bags of 8 o'clock but I dont remember the blend.
I always got the big bag because it was the only whole bean offered.

dependant on the person.. what is good the south American blends or
the African blends?
>2. DO NOT BOIL COFFEE!!!

yes coffee served too hot (such as mcdonalds) is basically just crap
and water

>3. Make GOOD COFFEE STRONG ENUF!!

Coffee does not ever need to be "strong" to be a good coffee. The
"strength of the coffee should never be too strong or too weak. It
should be right in the middle. When a coffee is too strong it becomes
bitter and just tastes bad (starbucks does this). The people who want
their coffees like that are not drinking coffee to enjoy a cup They
want their fix, and caffeine is all that is available and legal.

Now I will agree on the chocolate, however it is not good for every
cup... maybe once or twice a week..

My local Kroger offers the regular size whole bean bags of Eight O'clock coffee.
But for the larger size, I can only find that at WallyWorld.

I meant chocolate just every so often.... I mean for me it would ruin
the experience of having chocolate in it every time.....

Although I have experimented.. sometimes a drop of vanilla or use a
vanilla soy, I have even put mint leaves with it... that was not all
that good lol

Of course. Impossible for such a business model to have decent coffee.

Any instant coffee is by default awful.

Starbucks is just awful - no matter where the store may be in the
world. Bland and without character.

Last year I discovered the joys of Vietnamese coffee:
https://postimg.cc/MfHNM50g Never thought I'd like a coffee with
condensed milk, but it's just heavenly. Their coffee is of the Robusta
type (very high in caffeine, so be warned) and roasted in a particular
way. So it has a distinctive taste and much thicker than normal
coffee. I have found it almost impossible outside Vietnam to get an
authentic and properly made version of this coffee. I really miss it.

Vietnamese egg coffee is pretty awesome too

Kona does make for a very smooth brew. I used to a contact to get some of that stuff from a small farm. It was just some beautiful beans - every single one was a perfect bean. I think a lot of coffee drinkers would say that 100% Kona is too smooth for them.

I like a Vietnamese brand of coffee. It's as smooth as Kona with a wonderful chocolate note. I later found out it was a processed, flavored, coffee. My guess is that it's somehow processed with oil - it's a wonderful process and Trung Nguyen is a unique coffee.

I like the Smithfarms site - it looks handmade and that's entirely appropriate for a small coffee farm like that. I can't say if they actually do everything with such personal attention but the site sure gives that impression.. I love that they call their coffee the "tastiest caffeine delivery system on the planet!"

I think the reason it's hard to get a great cup of coffee is that the beans have a very short lifespan between being roasted and when it's brewed. Most coffee is brewed outside of that window. This assumes that the beans are of good quality.

I may beg to differ. As much as I disparage McD's food<?>, their coffee
really improved a lot. I have posted here about picking some up on a
road trip a couple years and how my wife and I agreed that it was
excellent. It was significant that my wife agreed heartily because we
had had to car pool for a while and since I started work so much earlier
she would stop at McDs for breakfast. She hated their coffee and would
stop at Hortons. After several warnings about bringing Hortons coffee
into McDs they kicked her out.

I have had some decent coffee at Starbucks. It is better than most
franchised coffee shops, but not really worth the money. I get much
better coffee at the corner bakery/coffee shop. They have fair trade
coffee and have three choices each day, one being flavoured. They also
do espresso, latte, cappuccino and all those foofoo coffee drinks. Unlke
$tarbucks, they have an impressive assortment muffins, scones, cookies
and squares.

I was quite impressed with Vietnamese style coffee when I had it. I
usually drink coffee black, so the sweetened condensed milk added
something I am not used to. The first time I had it was after dinner,
and I was awake until about 4 am.

I think you're right about that. McDonald's quality control is probably the highest in the food industry. It's not great coffee but it's a lot better than the restaurants I've been going to. These restaurants/coffee shops do a lot of business serving breakfast. The food's pretty good and yet they will serve it with a substandard cup of coffee. That's something that I cannot wrap my brain around.

I don't have a sweet tooth, but I do love it with the Vietnamese
coffee. It's quite a strong, bitter coffee because they use Robusta
beans. It compliments it so well and gives it a thick consistency.
They also do a version with egg yolk, which may sound bizarre but is
also delicious.

LOL, yes. It's probably the strongest coffee I've ever had. But it
tastes so damned good. 1 cup is enough, when I have two I'm buzzing
for a couple of hours.

To be perfectly honest, i had been hearing people saying how good it
was. Given my experiences with McDs, I was reluctant to try it, but one
day I was supposed to go hiking with a friend. I was early and there was
a McDs nearby, so I tried it. It was better than it used to be. The
next time I tried it was about two years later and I don' know if they
had improved the beans, the grind or the machine, but it was really
good. I left on a high note. I have not had it again since.

Between the SCM and that powerful coffee there is a lot of good flavour.
I wish there as some way to do it without that sweetness.

I wish I had known about that stuff when I used to have to work midnight
shifts. I could have had one coffee very early in the shift and I would
have been buzzed all night. There are times when I have had trouble
sleeping because I had too much coffee or had it too late in the
evening, but this was early evening, about 6:30, and it worked hours
longer than coffee has ever lasted on me before.

very true, this is why it is important to always buy whole bean coffee
and then freeze the beans until ready to grind, at least that is what
I do...

Actually , freezing the beans is not a good thing . Every time you pull
them out to get some they condense a small amount of moisture . Over
time this will degrade the coffee . Now keeping the package sealed is
another thing , that keeps the oils from evaporating or oxidizing . When
I blend my coffee I do it 400 gm at a time into a Tupperware container .
The rest stays in the foil/plastic bag with all the air squeezed out .
That Tupper container is opened about every 4th day to refill the
grinder hopper .

Y'all make it way too complicated. We've got a $15 dollar filter
coffee machine. We use vacuum packed ground coffee from Aldi that we
freeze until we need it. This makes good coffee that's much better
than what our Delonghi machine makes with Whoop Dee Do whole beans.

So much for coffee snobism.

Yes. Roasted beans are very dry, and so will absorb any moisture
rapidly.

Â* You think I'm a coffee snob ? Shit man , I just like a good cup of
coffee in the morning . I make mine in a 5 cup Mr Coffee drip machine ,
about as basic as it gets . I've just found that fresh ground has a much
better flavor , and it's just not that much trouble . My coffee beans
come from Walmart fer cryin' out loud !

$15 is way too much to pay for a stinkin' coffee machine. I use a plastic drip filter thingie with a cheap paper filter. The whole thing, with 90 filters cost $3 at Diaso, I hope you're proud of your snobby ass.

I love condensed milk but that stuff gives me diarrhea. My guess is that it's the same with other Asians. That's the mystery of Vietnamese coffee. I asked the VN guy at work but he skirted the issue and I never got a straight answer. My guess is that those guys have built up an immunity to condensed milk by drinking the stuff regularly. The food researchers should be studying this medical mystery.

Yep! I used a COFFEE SLICER for YEARS before I obtained an actual Coffee GRINDER, and YES I know the difference (slow Burr Grinder grinding vs. fast whirling Slicer Blades CUTTING UP the coffee beans!!) but as long as I got GOOD COFFEE and USED ENOUGH OF IT... :-)

And yes, I use a LOT of coffee when I make a DRIP POT! Because I make GOOD COFFEE and I make it STRONG ENUF! :-)
