Serious coffee drinkers only please......
Nor real sure if this is off topic or not since it kinda does not have
much to do with cooking or recipes, just mainly coffee brands, blends, and roasts Here in my opinion are the worst coffee on the planet, let me know if you agree. In no particular order Mcdonalds coffee (any fast food coffee for that matter this does not include diners such as IHOP and waffle house) foldgers any brand any type of instant coffee (that stuff should be illegal) Maxwell House Nescafe Hills brothers Coffee that is just ok (I will drink it if nothing else is around and if I can find it in whole bean) Starbucks Community Diner coffee (I will not drink it but I have had it in the past) Eight O'Clock Lavazzaa Coffee I like and/or buy regularly Trader Joes whole bean Gevalia Whole bean Brothers Gourmet whole bean (not sure if they are still around) Please rate the brands that you have tried especially if it is not on my list. -- "There are idiots among us, and they all believe in a god" ~Toidi Uoy |

I used to have an office next to a fast food restaurant that started serving great coffee. It was wonderful working in a place where great coffee is available anytime you want it. I drank my share of it because I knew it wasn't going to last. Eventually they went to a different supplier or the conditions of the coffee supply chain changed and they started serving plain old regular bad coffee again. OTOH, I'm going to be drinking coffee even if it's a mediocre brew because the reality is that taste in not the primary concern of mine. |

The "strength of the coffee should never be too strong or too weak. It should be right in the middle. When a coffee is too strong it becomes bitter and just tastes bad (starbucks does this). Their coffee is of the Robusta type (very high in caffeine, so be warned) and roasted in a particular way. So it has a distinctive taste and much thicker than normal coffee. I have found it almost impossible outside Vietnam to get an authentic and properly made version of this coffee. I really miss it. Kona does make for a very smooth brew. I used to a contact to get some of that stuff from a small farm. It was just some beautiful beans - every single one was a perfect bean. I think a lot of coffee drinkers would say that 100% Kona is too smooth for them. I like a Vietnamese brand of coffee. It's as smooth as Kona with a wonderful chocolate note. I later found out it was a processed, flavored, coffee. My guess is that it's somehow processed with oil - it's a wonderful process and Trung Nguyen is a unique coffee. I like the Smithfarms site - it looks handmade and that's entirely appropriate for a small coffee farm like that. I can't say if they actually do everything with such personal attention but the site sure gives that impression.. I love that they call their coffee the "tastiest caffeine delivery system on the planet!" |

I think the reason it's hard to get a great cup of coffee is that the beans have a very short lifespan between being roasted and when it's brewed. Most coffee is brewed outside of that window. This assumes that the beans are of good quality. |

It was significant that my wife agreed heartily because we had had to car pool for a while and since I started work so much earlier she would stop at McDs for breakfast. She hated their coffee and would stop at Hortons. I get much better coffee at the corner bakery/coffee shop. They have fair trade coffee and have three choices each day, one being flavoured. They also do espresso, latte, cappuccino and all those foofoo coffee drinks. I usually drink coffee black, so the sweetened condensed milk added something I am not used to. The first time I had it was after dinner, and I was awake until about 4 am. |

It's not great coffee but it's a lot better than the restaurants I've been going to. These restaurants/coffee shops do a lot of business serving breakfast. The food's pretty good and yet they will serve it with a substandard cup of coffee. That's something that I cannot wrap my brain around. |

I wish I had known about that stuff when I used to have to work midnight shifts. I could have had one coffee very early in the shift and I would have been buzzed all night. There are times when I have had trouble sleeping because I had too much coffee or had it too late in the evening, but this was early evening, about 6:30, and it worked hours longer than coffee has ever lasted on me before. |

I've just found that fresh ground has a much better flavor , and it's just not that much trouble . I love condensed milk but that stuff gives me diarrhea. My guess is that it's the same with other Asians. That's the mystery of Vietnamese coffee. I asked the VN guy at work but he skirted the issue and I never got a straight answer. My guess is that those guys have built up an immunity to condensed milk by drinking the stuff regularly. The food researchers should be studying this medical mystery. |

I used a COFFEE SLICER for YEARS before I obtained an actual Coffee GRINDER, and YES I know the difference (slow Burr Grinder grinding vs. fast whirling Slicer Blades CUTTING UP the coffee beans!!) but as long as I got GOOD COFFEE and USED ENOUGH OF IT... :-) And yes, I use a LOT of coffee when I make a DRIP POT!
