Yes.
Years ago, I administered a political discussion group, during the
period leading up to the referendum on Scottish devolution.

Very different.

Thunderbird does it as all email programs do.

I don't understand your point, Ed.
If you use a bcc, you address it to yourself and all recipients
see an email just to them from you without seeing the others.

A mailing list is meant to work as a private group chat. Even
then though, you can respond privately or to a few others.

Our kayak club uses Mailchimp for group mailings. We were having trouble
with some members not getting their emails and it turned out that some
servers were filtering them out because the number of recipients made it
look like junk, or their mail readers thought they were junk.

The classic mailing list was supported by software that would take
mail addressed to, for example, and forward
it to a list of subscribers. Members of the list never knew who
all of the subscribers were. Most lists could be subscribed to
in digest form, where you'd get a single e-mail once a week with
all of the week's e-mails concatenated together.

I was subscribed to one or two in the old days. Here's a longer
article on the subject:

You always have the option to reply to sender only but that just
defines email. Reply to all goes to all on the list.

The "mailing list" thing is to have a group chat with only those
you pick. Again...like all of you sitting in a room and chatting
with each other. No one else reads those posts, just the ones on
your private list. Better than public Facebook.

===

Yes I can see that! I don't post much on FB anyway and just use email,
but I am sure it is useful if you have a biggish number of people to
include)

Point is, there are different setups for different reasons. What is the
goal?

With a bcc the recipient can reply to you but not the others. If you
want a groups discussion you have to either CC or use an email program
designed to do that.

Works for text, but not as well for all the other things people share
on Facebook.

No comparison basically.

LOL yeah so is email, facebook, twitter, youtube, quora, and about 20
others. If you are worried about privacy then just use email, in fact
email is still the best method of communication.

That was just quickly thrown together, I was in a bit of a rush. The
actual dish will be the fritters over pasta or rice with assorted veg
and the sesame sauce drizzled over.

Yep, and you can do it with semaphore flag signals, or smoke
signals, even without facebook. You can even engrave your message in
a dried turd and send it via usps ... again without facebook.

And it smells much better!

That looks tasty. I love that plate.

Vegetable fritters used to be popular over here. It's Japanese/Okinawan kine food. My aunt used to make that stuff back in the 60's when she owned an okazuya.

I have almost no FB presence at all. I use it mostly for WXRISK, a
weather site run by David Toller who is very accurate about my area.
Now and again, I use it for work to track a location of a command's
home base if I need a rough estimate on costs to rotate a student from
training location to next duty station if I need to park them there
TAD until the next class they need for initial training has room (could
be 30 days or 60). Sometimes I have to park them nearer at a 'like
command' which we then work Command Master Chief to Command Master
Chief and the nearer one takes them under wing for initial command
'Hands On' training which takes about 2 months anyways.

Have to admit, probably save the Navy about 1/2million a year with that
but actual FB is only needed for the more unusual commands where we
don't send many accession sailors so I have to look up where they are.

I dislike the interface of FB over all and most of it is very inane to
me.

Goes out to everyone on the list. Probably one of the best known is
EAT-L which has been going strong for some 35 years now.
