It just goes to show how a national upbringing can leave its stamp on a people. Asking the Dutch to give up Black Pete is like asking the Americans to give up Jesus, Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny. Well, maybe we could give up the Easter Bunny. I mean, he's so hippady-hoppidy ridiculous! Perhaps we could replace the Easter Bunny with Black Pete. I mean, he's the right color and all. OTOH, as all Americans know, that would be incredibly racist. |

I think Black Pete's on the way out. There was an attempt at compromise by making him Soot Pete. Black from chimney soot. But the Offended People were still offended. It'll have to be Rainbow Pete or even Stroopwafel (really) Pete. >Well, maybe we could give up the Easter Bunny. I mean, he's so hippady-hoppidy ridiculous! Surely you can't be serious. You and some other clowns on this newsgroup think nothing of race-baiting in a desperate attempt to get the attention you crave from little old me during this holiday season. That makes me feel so special. You can just forget about calling me names, Uncle. That doesn't work. If you were 6 years old, I'd think it was cute. If you're over 6, that's just pathetic. That shit don't work on me cause I've been called worse by people more important than you. Like that guy in the movie said: "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can ever imagine." Yee haa! |

White ppl in blackface started way back when when blacks were rarely hired as actors. So white ppl did the black face. It was just a common thing and I never thought of it as racist but it probably was. Probably offended blacks then. Current governor of Virginia has been under fire for several months now once someone discovered a photo of him in black face in his old college yearbook. |

I think it's the intention that makes something or someone racist or not. I don't think Trudeau was a racist when he had that blackface, because the intention behind it wasn't racist. |

If he was doing a black face routine, blackening his skin and acting like a simpleton negro, then he deserves to be pilloried for perpetuating that sort of stuff. However, I reject the idea that anyone who puts on dark makeup as part of a masquerade costume is doing "blackface". That being said, it was amusing to see our prime minister caught up in a blackface scandal. He is the leader of a political party that preaches political correctness. Then he got caught in a lie. When asked if there were any more pictures like that around he said yes, there may be another. Sure enough there was a second one, and then there was a video of him jumping and dancing like a subhuman and with a banana in his pants. |
