Red Beans & Rice. This time I didn't add andouille sausage or any sort
of meat. Just didn't feel like it. To go with it I baked a rather flat pan of cornbread. I did that on purpose. I didn't want a lot of rise. I wanted it to be toasty/crunchy outside and firm inside. https://i.postimg.cc/YSk7WG4d/lunch.jpg Quite tasty! ![]() Jill |

There are places with better banchan assortments, but they're farther from my office. Life is filled with compromise. There's one closer to my house that's an absolute dive, but the food is marvelous. I think I'll go torture myself by looking up their health inspection reports. Cindy Hamilton |

Mostly, the food is just so-so. OTOH, I ordered a Kalbi and butterfish from the regular menu.. The dish looked completely out of place in that joint and I mean it in a good way. Just looking at the plate, I could tell the chef was reaching high and probably felt trapped being there. I made sure to express to him how much I enjoyed his food because I know how it is to be trapped in a cage. https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared...tZzg2Cm9HWbIxy |

I've been eating there for almost 30 years. Given the pervasive "old grease" smell of the front of the house, I expected worse when I looked at the report. I'll quite often check new restaurants if I think the owners don't have much experience in the business. That's just prudent. Cindy Hamilton |

Oh, stackable food! Very nice presentation. Hopefully it tasted as good as it looks. ![]() As for chefs feeling "trapped" because they're working in a "hole in the wall"... lots of chefs start out in small dives and move onward and upward. Many years ago, when I still lived in the Memphis area, there was a Chinese restaurant just a few miles from my home and on my way home from work. Teeny, tiny. Just a few tables and chairs inside and lots of goofy decorations obviously geared towards making it look "authentic". Plastic red dragons and things like that. But the food was excellent. They made the most fantastic steamed dumplings. And fried ones, too. I used to call to order something before I left work so I could pick it up on the way home. One day I called. The older Chinese (grandma?) woman who was usually in the back answered. She didn't speak English. I said I'd like to place an order. "Husband Go Pick up Daughter!" Uh, I can't place an order? "Husband Go Pick Up Daughter!" Okey doke. I'm guessing the daughter is the one who speaks English. Well, damn. I stopped there on the way home anyway because it was 45 minutes later. I figured I surely husband had picked up daughter by now. I really wanted an order of those steamed dumplings. Yes, they were back so I could place the order. There were a few other people in line at the counter ahead of me. The old woman who had answered my call kept going from the kitchen to the counter by the cash register. She had a cut hand wrapped in a gauze bandage with blood bleeding through. And she was handling the food both in the kitchen and as it came through the window, packing it up for the customers. Cut hand, blood, bandages... I left. I'd given it my own "health inspection." Jill |

For a while I was working out office that was next to a Chinese restaurant. When I pulled into the parking lot at the end of an evening shift or the start of a midnight shift we could count on seeing rats. |

You could have carried a pellet rifle with you and "harvested" a few to take home for either Rat Stew or Rat Burgers. Good fresh meat - don't let the name scare you. |
