Default Do you use a Keurig? Like it?

I'm kind of thinking about getting one. Give me the pros and cons
please. I would probably use the My K-Cup filter approach. How do
you find the maintenance for the unit?
I don't like Mr. Coffee or percolator type coffee and want to avoid
something like that.
So far, we are a pot of coffee in the morning family. I think with
the Keurig my husband would probably make coffee for himself more
often.
Are there places where you can get the pods more cheaply?
Thanks

I buy Melitta pods for my Keurig because they are recyclable and I
like the flavour of the coffee.

i'm not into drinking coffee anyways any more other

I have never been impressed with Keurig coffee. I had it at a friend's
place a couple days go. You would be better off to wait for a good sale
on Nespresso machines. They make excellent coffee.

The Keurig and other machines will change the way you make and drink coffee.. If you want to get away from a pot of coffee every morning, getting one of these machines will probably do it. Probably the most important factor is being able to get the pods easily and cheaply. If you have a Costco near you, just get the machine and supplies they keep stock of.

What don't you like about the Mr. Coffee? The Keurig is very convenient
but the coffee itself is mediocre. You can, however, buy a refillable
pod and put in your own grind.

If you drink a pot a day and really like good coffee, invest in some
good equipment and good beans. I bought a Technivorm Moccamaster for my
wife but I imagine any of these would make a good cup
https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer

What is best for you depends on your priorities and personal taste. My
wife enjoyed her coffee so I got her the best I could find. I'd rather
have a cup of tea.

I've used a Mellita for years. I have no rotator cuff in both
shoulders and that has weakened both arms. It is becoming dangerous
to lift the pot of boiling water to pour over the coffee grounds.
Mellita is a drip through a paper or stainless steel cone. IMO, makes
really tasty coffee. I've never had anything but watery coffee from
Mr. Coffee.

With the Technivorm you do have to fill it with cold water but it heats
and disperses it over the grounds to drip through a #4 filter.

Keurig is popular. Perhaps a neighbor has one and you can have a cup of
coffee to see if it suits you.

It might be less strain on a friendship to go to a store with a good
return policy and just take it back if you don't like it.

I had my first Keurig coffee at a friend's house about 10 years ago. I
was not impressed. That was her third or fourth machine. She kept
getting lemons but was happy that they gladly replaced them. I was not
impressed with the coffee from her machine or with any other Keurig
coffee I have had since.

For one or two cups of coffee we usually use the French press or make an
espresso.

I started with a Pyrex glass stove top percolator, then a 70's West
Bend electric percolator, Both were equally nasty, but coffee was more
for the jolt than enjoyment.

Then a series of automatic drip machines because the flavor was
better, more like coffee shop coffee.

Did have an affair with whole beans, cleaning the pot every day and
other time consuming nonsense as age crept up on me.

Over time, no one in the house was drinking much coffee anymore. Was
pouring out half the pot.

Got a Keurig as a gift. The convenience and not wasting coffee is ok
with me. Tried a lot of coffees, favorite is the Great Value French
Roast or Peets.

Annoyances are cleaning cycles. Running several pitchers of water to
rinse the vinegar out. Used to chuck the Mr. Coffees when they scaled
up and were cheap to replace.

Biggest mug of coffee is 10 oz. Sometimes I make a 10 oz cup then
reuse the pod on strong setting at 4 oz to fill the travel mug.

Spouse says the Lipton tea pods don't compare and the hot water from
the machine is not hot enough and sometimes tastes like vinegar
(oops).

If it broke down I'd buy another one. Gotten lazy with the convenience
and not having to clean a carafe.

We usually buy our pods at Costco. Occasionally Target will put them on
super sale (but one, get one half off) which can make Target the better
deal. I bought one of those refillable ones that you can use your own
coffee in, but I returned it (reason escapes me now). DH loves the thing,
but Im indifferent. Im more of a tea gal, and I dont care for most of
the tea pods on the market. If you dont drink a big pot of coffee each
day, its great because there are no leftovers to go to waste. Its also
nice to be able to offer guests a variety of flavors and coffee types. On
the down side, ours can be finicky sometimes and doesnt always register
weve put the water in, so it doesnt switch to the 徘ut the pod in and
click brew guided stages. And buying pods in bulk to get them cheaper can
take up a lot of valuable pantry space.

I buy all my pods from Amazon as they have a great selection and feature some
newer ones occasionally. Good service from Amazon as well.
Keuring brewers are on sale quite often...I got mine as a gift. Requires some
maintenance but it is not onerous. I try new coffee blends quite often and
find some really interesting flavors. Ask your friends about their experiences
with Keuring...I have had NO problems with mine.

For several years we used a top of their line Cuisinart ADC, it made
excellent coffee but eventually the plasstic handle portion of the
caraffe deteriorated to the point I thought it dangerous to lift a
full pot. I phoned Cusinart and was told that they don't sell the
plastic handle (attached with one screw) and would have to purchase
the entire caraffe, $40. I thought that a big rip-off, for a few
dollars more I could buy a whole new machine. I looked at all the
coffee makers on Amazon, so many I couldn't decide, so ended up going
by price, Mr Coffee was the least expensive at $24 so ordered it. I
chose one in jet black, it looks nice and brews great coffee. My only
complaint is where the pilot light is located to indicate it's on, at
the bottom front, in daylight I can't tell if that tiny green light is
on or off, but eventually I remembered which direction to toggle the
switch.

The Mr. Coffee makes as good coffee as any ADC, quality depends on
which coffee and ones personal taste... we like Great Value by Walmart
better than any others, all their blends are good.

We've never needed to clean the unit or the caraffe. Keep in mind
that coffee is better than 99% water, if you have hard water any unit
will scale up. We use water from our reverse osmosis filter, no scale
and no strange taste. Anyone who's fussy about their coffee or tea
absolutely needs an RO filter.

ツ* That depends on the roast , the grind , and how much coffee grounds
you use . My little 5 cup Mr C ADCM makes a great cup of coffee . Fresh
ground medium fine grind blend of 2 8 O'clock varieties makes coffee
with a rich full flavor and not bitter at all . It doesn't stay in the
pot long enough to get nasty ...

I honestly don't know anyone with a Keurig. I've been buying beans
and grinding them daily forever. People who drink my coffee volunteer
that it is really good. Friends/neighbors either have a percolator or
buy their coffee at one of those coffee drive-throughs. Or, the
closest neighbor likes the really pale brewed coffee. That's why I am
asking here.
Maybe I'll try putting my Melitta down in the sink on a hot pad and
pouring the hot water from that arm level.
Thanks for the info on Technivorm.

100% agreement on Mr. lousy Coffee. I have several 30-60$ coffee makers
and MC is the worst of all. If you look at the grounds 3/4 through the
process they are not even all wet. The hot water delivery process misses
the bullseye so the extraction is not what it should be.

We have used Keurig many times traveling and at best it is OK. Not
something you may want on a daily basis.

Technivorm is touted as one of the best and I have tried coffee from it
at relatives home. It's is known to have a very consistent extraction
temperature which is good but it's sort of a Rube G style contraption
that takes up too much space and is way overpriced. The coffee that I
tried was a quality fresh ground bean and was good but not noticeably
any better than others. Not paying 300$ for a coffee maker in this lifetime.

IMO, even that might be generous. I think it tastes more like instant
coffee than real, freshly made coffee.

Maybe so. I do know that there is a big difference in taste based on the
Kcup brand. One place we were staying had maybe 15 different brands and
various roasts and some were far better than others. Still not "real"
coffee.

I think that may be true. DH likes one of the Starbucks k-cups so we mostly
buy those, but we also have Guatemalan and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe pods at
the moment that guests tend to gravitate to.

The good thing is, most stores will take the Keurig back if you hate it,
especially Costco. If you do get one, Id recommend buying pods from coffee
brands you love, not necessarily the cheaper variety boxes widely
available. Otherwise, buying one of those separate refillable pods you can
use your own fresh ground beans in.

There was a coffee shop where my wife and her walking group went a
couple times. Some of them liked it because there were so many types and
flavors of coffee to try. I met her there once and realized it was a
just Keurig coffee.

I roasted my own coffee beans for years, but as with all the bread
baking, too, I just do not go to all that trouble often these days.

Keurig has a model that offers "brewing" options- strength button and
4 sizes of cup, as well as a cappuchino/latte frother (WOO!). Yeah, it
costs more, but I think I found it on sale at Costco at some point.
Years ago I had a basic model and eventually moved it to the basement
as I never liked the coffee.

I have a Nespresso. I have a Tassimo. I have vac pot makers. I have
Melitta. I have Chemex. I have, without exaggeration, dozens of
coffee making devices, as I collect them. The problem was this: It
got to the point that unless a cup was freshly made, I did not enjoy
it. We tried the insulated decanters, but even that started to taste
off to me. I cannot say this is even any quality issue that I had
developed...just age changing my perception of things, perhaps.

It took a long time to find a k-cup provider that offers up a very
strong, but not bitter taste, which is my preference for coffee. I
cannot say that the Keurig is the best cup of coffee I have ever had
(**below), but I found a couple of K-Cup coffees that are just fine.
It is the experimenting with the pricey cups to find the right one
that gets bothersome. Yes, I have the capability of making my own
pods, too. That is easy to do.

I do not know what kind of flavor the basic Keurig model puts out
these days, only what this fancy-pants one does and that I am really
ok with it. It is a K-Cafe. I just checked prices and I know I did not
pay what I am now seeing.

**- My favorite coffee these days is really cold-brewed iced. The
flavor cannot be beat. It's 36F out there right now....I look forward
to warmer weather to enjoy that again.

I don't have a brand since I buy beans and grind them. It doesn't
sound like a Keurig is for me. Thx

I have returned a Keurig machine that had a faulty water metering system. I tried to fix it but fail so I dumped it. Someone suggested that I return it to Costco. This did not occur to me because the machine was nearly a year and I didn't have the receipt or the box. It was suggested that I might get a refund so I took it to the service desk and they gave me cold, hard, cash. What a deal!

One could probably get free coffee by getting one of these machines with the intention of drinking all the coffee and then returning it. Currently, the Costco Keurig machines come with 15 K-cups. You pretty much have to do this at Costco though.

ツ* Out of personal curiosity , what kind of beans are you using ? My
current blend is 8 O'Clock , 50/50 mix (by weight) of their Colombian
Peaks and their Dark Italian Espresso . I grind fresh for each pot ,
medium/fine grind . Makes for a very rich but not bitter brew .I tried
some Starbucks once , tasted burned ...As far as Jay's pot not getting
the grounds wet , his tubes are probably badly scaled , which seriously
slows water delivery .

I generally draw Columbian Supremo beans from the bin. I've never
bought beans pre-bagged. Years and years ago I used to mix a couple
different kinds but haven't done that in a great while. Every once
in a while Costco will have Starbucks beans on sale. Tried them once
and didn't see a need to try again. Our coffee gets ground
immediately before the hot water is poured on. Pour hot water to fill
the filter, let stand 30 seconds to wake up the beans and then pour
the rest of the hot water into the filter. The coffee is consumed
within the half hour.

Janet, I have a Cuisinart programmable, drip coffee maker that grinds
the beans first and the carafe is vacuum insulated so that the coffee is
hot all day. Contrary to what Boron has found, I haven't been able to
detect any obvious deterioration in flavour over the course of a day. I
have it near the sink and fill the reservoir with the faucet hose so the
only lifting is when you pour yourself a cup. You can set it to brew I
once thought of getting a Nespresso as my sister has one but prefer the
Cuisinart.
I've had mine for several years so the design may have changed a bit. It
is similar to: http://tiny.cc/iwjiiz
You can fill the reservoir with enough water to make anywhere from 2 to
12 cups and set the grind control for the right amount of beans as well
as 3 levels of strength.

The great about Costco is you dont even need your receipts, just your
Costco card. They can look up anything you purchase with just your ID card.

A lot of other stores have similar record keeping. I had to return a
magazine to Bass Pro Shop because it was the wrong size. I wanted a
spare .22 mag for my Ruger and accidentally picked up .22 magnum. I
didn't realize my error until I went to use it a couple months later and
I had trashed the receipt. Thanks to their loyalty card the clerk was
able to track my purchase and they gladly refunded my money.

ツ* Dammit , y'all keep extolling the virtues of pour-over I may just
have to get one and try it . Max (Doggus Maximus the Handsome Hairball)
and I really look forward to our first (and his only) cup in the morning
.. He watches closely as I take my first sip , if i tell him this is a
lousy cup this morning he rolls his eyes ... and gets excited when I say
hey , this is some goooood coffee . He drinks it (with plenty of milk)
either way ...

I also use the 5 cup MrCoffee adcm. Actually called 4 cup but
I fill mine right to the brim so it makes 5. Their definition
of a "cup" is laughable though...5 ounces??? What a baby cup
of coffee that is.

Anyway, I get two full mugs of coffee from a full pot.
I use 5 TBS of grounds in the filter. I try various kinds
but it's all about the same. Mainly, I'm addicted to a cup
first thing in the morning. That's all I drink anymore.

There was a time when I ground my own beans right before
brewing. Didn't like that. First thing in the morning, I
just want a cup immediately. So I ground them the evening
before so I could just turn on machine in the morning.

Finally tried buying pre-ground coffee and it tasted just
as good to me. That's when I turned my coffee grinder into
a grinder for dry ferret food to make their warm gravy
meals. All of us were happy here.

For many years in the past, I eventually get tired of
brewed coffee and will switch to instant for a bit.
Maxwell House instant is on my grocery list for this morning.
It's a nice difference for a while.

Especially good since I only drink one cup or less each
day. Many years ago, I drank the stuff all day long.
