I was at the market yesterday and picked up some really nice bagels.
They are all set to be eaten for brunch as soon as my wife gets home
from church. I sliced them in half spread a nice layer of cream cheese
on each side, topped with smoked salmon, some thinly sliced onion and
some capers.

There is pork being slow cooked in the oven for pulled pork sandwiches
later on.

We had burgers for lunch. It'll be some sort of chicken for dinner.
No Superbowl watching here. I'll try to watch some of the commercials
tomorrow.

Lots of people up here don't get to see those new commercials, but it is
an interesting concept to air that special football even where one of
the highlights is commercials.

"People" perhaps. Not me. I have no real interest in any kind of sports.
We will watch a little curling on a Sunday afternoon if the CBC is
showing it and we happen to notice.

We had the Puppy Bowl on for a while yesterday. Love that water-bowl cam.

The problem with American sports is that they're all domestic. One
American city against another. Year after year. Who cares? Just like I
don't care if Amsterdam plays Rotterdam. It becomes interesting when
it's international. Dutch national team versus German national team or
UK national team etc. That's interesting. But you guys don't have
that. Meh.

We ate junk. We had shrimp in cocktail sauce (looks like pork and beans)
with cream cheese in front, crudités, ham wraps and deviled eggs. Pigs in
a blanket arrived at half-time. My team lost.

Your cocktail sauce looks a bit different from mine. How do you make it?

Almost right. I oven baked a Totino's Supreme Party pizza.
YOU like those too.
No enhancement necessary. Ate that before Super Bowl.

After half time, I had a snack of salty tortilla chips
with onion dip.

I like both teams so I didn't really care who won.
I knew it would be a close game though and it was.

Funny large headline in Sunday mornings newspaper
sports section:
"FOR A CHANGE, THERE WILL BE NONE OF THIS"
and a large arrow pointing sideways to a pic of
Tom Brady in uniform. LOL

The half time show was a complete fail as always.
Do people actually listen to music like that now?

And finally, I saw 3 commercials that I liked.

- woman carrying a large pot of chili slipped and fell
backwards, tossing the pot up in the air. It landed on
the ceiling fan and tossed chili all over the room. Then
all the cleaning products were used to clean it all up.

- The Jeep commercial was a good one.

- My favorite was the Ground Hog Day one with Bill Murray
based on the movie. He kidnapped the ground hog in his first
day, then as days were repeated, him and the ground hog
had many adventures. Especially funny was when Bill was
in an arcade playing "whack a mole" and the ground hog
just looked at him like "what the hell?" funny!

I'm easily amused. :)

Here's a big Homer Simpson "DOH!" for you. I realized that

You could start off in the Netherlands travel by bus down to Belgium,
into France and across to Germany and play a game in each country in
less time that it would take a take to travel between some of those
American cities. BTW, there are Canadian teams in the NHL, the NBA and
American League. He would probably prefer to forget about the Olympics
because his teams have been smoked by the American teams.

Probably in sports nobody in the Netherlands gives a rat's ass about.

He just doesn't realize how competitive those USA teams are and how
competitive each state is. Even the local high school teams are cut-
throat competitive against each other.

It's a good one and a classic now, as you said.
Knowing the movie was what made the SB Jeep commercial amusing.

I was surprised that the movie wasn't shown here this Feb.2. In a
couple of past years, one channel showed it back to back all day
long.

Thanks for all that info, Steve. No, I don't have a wireless router
connected to my TV. My computer is not connected to my TV. No HDMI
cables, either. Still strictly coax cables here in the boonies.

I waited until this morning to connect the box (yes, has to be set to
Channel 3). I activated the box, programmed the remote for the brand of
TV. It turns the TV and the box on and off and the volume control
works. I waited... Channel Signal not available (ynot getting any
channels. I finally called tech support. After all the automated phone
menu rigamarole I got a recorded message. Something like "There's a
technician working to restore television service in your area. Speaking
to an agent won't resolve the issue."

Here when we buy a new TV it's a simple matter to phone the cable
company and they'll give an appointment for a tech to arrive... we get
a new box and new wiring all installed and tested.

This past summer we got a new utility pole installed because when the
highway Dept. repaired a culvert they knocked down our old pole so
arranged for the power company to replace it. So now we have a nice
brand new pole that's properly installed and without guy wires, those
are hazardous when mowing. The cable company also installed all new
outside wiring.

Thanks for that info, Carol. I've wondered about those
tv antenna alternatives to cable for local stations.
So you can get 4 channels well in one direction.
How is the reception on all 20 in the other direction?

Well I didn't buy a new TV and I didn't need new wiring. Just needed
the signal to get to the new (never needed before) cable box, which it
couldn't do since the service was down area-wide. It's all good now. :)

I've heard of those things. Fortunately, if there's a storm that knocks
everything out I don't tend to worry about television. I enjoy reading
books. :)

I don't have a generator. I do have one light bar that will turn on
automatically when the electricity goes off. I have led lanterns so I
can read. Hurricane (oil) lamps if I feel like it. ;) I have a battery
powered weather radio for storm updates.

Your antenna setup sounds like a good solution if you want television
during a storm-related (lengthy) outage and have a generator. :)

Pretty good when we tested it! Some not perfect but watchable. Since
mine is the baseline cheap type that stick to the window, you can't
'directionalize it' the same as one on a stand but I'm ok with the less
price for just storm times. About every 5 years or so we'll get
knocked hard off the grid for 3-5 days and that is what it is for.

Ive had frequent annoying outages with my internet connection for about
six months. When the net goes out, my computer, TV and non-iPhone iDevices
go out. I bought a standalone antenna from Amazon, so I could, at least,
watch TV. It never showed up but showed as delivered. Amazon refunded me,
but I still want a antenna. Best Buy is about two miles away. I have the
gas to get there and really have to take that old school step. I will get
five channels at most on antenna, I think.

This he-man is approaching 74, kiddo. I barely made a mile on the first day

My interest in her antenna was about getting rid of the
expensive cable bills and only seeing 20 local channels.

The local channels are good but I still do like some of the
cable only channels. It's another addiction and I'm hooked.

A one time purchase of an antenna for $35 and 20 channels
vs $1200 per year for cable tv and only get a few other
channels that I like. Hmmmmm....

It's worth considering.

I got rid of cable years ago, here (Chicago metro area) we receive a plethora of OTA channels, must be similar in VB...anything "extra" one can most probably stream, many options available...you should seriously consider it, Gary...!!!

Just think, you could use that extra $1200 to treat yerself to a trip to DISNEY WORLD...!!!

This old fart is 77 and can easily walk 18 holes pulling a golf cart.
Your problem is sitting on your ass 24/7 watching too much TV.
For a 4 mile round trip to a store, weather permitting I'd pedal my
bike... no gas to buy.
And WTF are you murdering wild ducks, what did they do to you?
I'm positive you don't eat them, wild ducks are the gamiest.
And you're worrying about the price of gas yet you don't mind the
price of shotgun shells. they ain't cheap at about a buck per.

The streaming services are good if they have the channels you want. I
know of people that have two of them so they get their favorites.

Cable has always screwed you on options. Oh, you want the History
channel? It comes in the $15 bundle with the Laundry Channel and
Cricket Channel

Say what? I love laundry and cricket! Well, maybe not enough to pay 15 bucks a month, anyway. If they bundle it in with the Ironing Channel, I'm all in!

Yep. They are getting ridiculous. If you want the Cooking channel you
get a bunch of other channels targetting female audiences. The comedy
channel comes with a bunch of children's cartoon channels, and it seems
to run The Big Bang Theory at least 16 hours a day. The cooking channels
have very few cooking shows on anymore. They are mostly "reality" shows
with a competition premise.

There was a Canadian called Made in Canada about a small production
company. In one episode the owner of the company was talking about
buying a TV channel about knitting. Everyone thought that it was a
ridiculous idea but he explained that it would cost peanuts to produce
the shows. The cable and satellite companies snap up stuff like that
because they take those shows and put them in bundles. Everyone in the
business knows that nobody watches the stuff, but the consumers love al
the free extras in the bundles. They won't pay for the one channel the
want to watch but they will by a bundle with the one show they want and
a bunch that they won't watch.
