Default split pea soup for dinner 5/22

I had picked up a pack of 4 nice sized ham hocks at Grocery Outlet a while back. They had been sitting in the back of the fridge for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I took them out and slow cooked them till falling apart, cooled them down and portioned out the meat and stock into three containers. Two went in the freezer for future use and today I used the other one to make split pea soup. So good.

here's the recipe I use. I like my split pea soup not so thick and not so paste like.

It's yummy.

It was leftover turkey for us last night. He nuked his dressing, turkey,
and gravy. I had my turkey over a salad with ranch.

Tonight's plan: steak, grilled asparagus, and perhaps potatoes.

Looks good... I always wash dried peas. You should try it with whole
dried peas, if available, they're more flavorful but need to be soaked
in cold water first, about eight hours. I also like pea soup made
with yellow peas.

Thanks Sheldon. Do the whole dried peas keep their shape better? I've never tried them and I do like the consistency of peas that have not completely dissolved into mush.

I must be one of the odd ones out. I prefer it when the peas have cooked
to mush. It makes it more of a pea sauce for the ham hock. I make mine
with a nice big smoked ham hock and I get more ham in each spoonful of
soup that I would get in a whole can of Habitant soup.

Whole dried pes can stay whole if cooked for a short time but I cook
them until they dissolve into the soup... I prefer them for their
better pea flavor.
