"Sur la table" has just filed. Could Williams-Sonoma be far behind?

Could be. This does not seem to be the time to sell high end kitchen
wares. Few people heading to the mall these days.

Except that more people have been cooking and baking at home and
discovering the joys of it. SLT's mail order side has been doing well
from that but the closures hit the outlets badly.

WS is several brands of housewares, clothing, and a few hotels.
Most of their housewares revenue is online sales. So while their
stores may close, they'll still survive just fine. They just made
Fortune 500 status last year.

Most of their WS branded kitchenwares are just rebranded major
brands at a huge markup (sometimes with a slight, usually
insignificant modification to make it "unique"). I wouldn't buy
anything there without searching out the parent brand product first.

On a personal note, wood-turning is my hobby and I make utilitarian and
artistic pieces. I started negotiations with a large craft shop just
before the shutdown. They haven't survived and will close down next
month. So I am stuck with numerous boxes, bowls, coffee scoops and
ornamental items.

They have a store here and I used to browse there often before the
shut-down. However, their prices are high and I have bought similar
stuff elsewhere at much lower prices.

Williams-Sonoma does far more catalog sales than walk-ins... they also
sell much better quality than Sur la table. With this virus thing a
lot more people are cooking/eating at home.
Another business that's been booming is vegetable gardening. Driving
around I see a lot more new vegetable gardens. Vegetable seeds sold
out early this year.

Priced fairly those items will sell well at a flea market.

They're the exact same things sold elsewhere for 40-100% more. My
Nomiku Wifi sous vide circulator cost $130. At Williams Sonoma it
was $250, just with the WS logo on it.

As usual Austin Steverino is full of donkey shit... that's why
Williams-Sonoma is doing great and Sur la table is bye bye.. can't
compare the two.

Thanks for the compliment. I've looked at Etsy. However, I had to market
my services for most of my career and thought that I could give that up
with retirement.
Of course, with the outfall from the pandemic, money is tight for many.

Oh, that's a damn shame! Maybe you can sell some of the stuff on
ebay, but the canada post will eat about half the profits.

Plus all the taxes. Won't be much left, but maybe you can recover
the raw material costs.

Popeye, your safe. The governor has signed an order. Any homosexual
within 500 miles of brooklyn may remain free. They are allowed to
suck one dik per day in the state, and even pretend they are not
homo. Yoose can come outta dat closet now!

Brooklyn residents, and naval personnel may eat 12 diks per day.

Yoose'll be happy bout dat!

Don't blame you. If you don't need the money, don't bother.

Plus, in canada, if you do sell, there's lots of hoops to jump
through, and the pst, gst and other st eats up any profit.

Although I strenuously disagree with your politics, you have terrific
skills in more than one arena. Become a capitalist with "Grahams Bake
and Bowl€, or start an Internet business.

Thanks, Leo! As I mentioned in another post, I have retired from a
professional lifetime of marketing my qualifications etc. and don't
relish the thought of starting again - but it seems that I must:-(

You are very talented, your work is of a high standard, quite attractive...the same for your baking skills...I mean that sincerely...

Anyways, graham, would you trade one of your lovely bowls for a copy of a Margaret Thatcher bio I am currently reading...???

;-D

I agree with you there. I disagree with his politics too. I'm not sure what it is but I'm sure that I disagree with them. Come to think of it, I'm not to sure about your politics either.

OTOH, two of the smartest guys I know have the worst politics that I know. I value their opinions and will continue to ask them for their advice and opinions - just as long as it's not about politics!

An HP programmable calculator. A really old one. Perhaps you are a retired engineer. You have the touch of a craftsman and the soul of an artist. I sincerely hate you!
