That would be the freedom to buy a house in some remote location where nobody cares what
you do, or to buy a house in the city where you are subject to the laws about lawn maintenance.
It's entirely one's own choice which one to prefer.

We have a concept called "curb appeal". If someone shopping for a house
doesn't like the looks of the neighbor's yard, they won't buy the
house. It's purely psychological. People think, "If the neighbors
cannot be bothered to mow their lawn, what other bad habits will
they have?"

We're not talking about any kind of flowers. We're talking about knee-high
grass and weeds.

Hmm... I guess one person's "free" is another person's "not so free".
But anyway, enjoy!

You're teaming up with Hank now? That's almost as bad as teaming up
with Greg Sorrow. How low can you sink, Lucretia? (Or is someone
posting under your name?)

I have a friend in Canada that swears if he ever buys a house,
he'll concrete over the entire property. lol

He thinks cutting grass each week is such a worthless chore.

It exists here, but it's amateur stuff. IME serious, experienced
viewers are not deterred (or impressed) by anything temporary/removable,
like long grass, purple and silver wallpaper, ugly furniture, or the
smell of roasting coffee/baking bread, and flower arrangements.

People think, "If the neighbors
> cannot be bothered to mow their lawn, what other bad habits will
> they have?"

"Not mowing the lawn" doesn't even get a mention in my Big Book of
Bad Neighbours.

In some areas, (the West) tall grass is a hazard for fire during the
hot and dry months. How you maintain your property affects your
neighbors and community. My city tends to grow up the gradual slopes
of the mountains behind us. In late spring, Firemen will go on foot
into neighborhoods to talk with homeowners about getting the untrimmed
slopes on their property cut down.

Our building looks down to the back gardens of a street below. One
man built a deck that covered all his yard (to avoid mowing) 3 more
have followed since. It is nice not to hear mowers cranking I must
admit.

Mine neither. But if they fail to mow the lawn, do they also have loud parties,
deal drugs, etc.?

It's like using credit rating to set car insurance rates. If people play fast
and loose with their money, they're also likely to be irresponsible
behind the wheel.

Here are some pictures of yards that we in the USA consider eyesores and
property devaluers.

https://i.postimg.cc/v8gvJPp4/Overgrown-Yard-1.jpg

https://i.postimg.cc/nrbQb1Dm/Overgrown-Yard-2.jpg
(these are not flowers, they are weeds)

https://i.postimg.cc/CxQ5pNyK/Overgrown-Yard-3.jpg

https://i.postimg.cc/V6z37x70/Overgrown-Yard-4.jpg

You get the general idea. It's not a pretty wilderness, it's lazy,
shiftless, no care homeowners devaluing everybody's property in their
neighborhood. Not always, but many times these unkept yards contain
broken-down cars, old washing machines, tires scattered about, and the
occasional clothes dryer. The house sometimes will match the yard;
in need of lots of maintenance.

Yards in the examples above attract snakes, rats, ticks, and chiggers
just to name a few critters.

Some folks out in the dessert west don't have grass. They fill the
yard with sand and decorations. I guess they probably put down
landscape plastic first, and just spray the occasional weed that
pops up. Some have a few cactus plants. Some of them look pretty
nice. Must save a ton of water.

I've always kidded with my family and neighbors that my dream someday is
have my yard covered in green concrete and then laid with Astroturf.

We've got a neighbour's horses on our land on and off. During winter
they've been keeping up, but spring is starting...

Flowering weeds can be important for bees

Don't laugh, but I've heard from more than one source that pigs are great
for keeping a field tidy. I have no sites to cite, just word of mouth.

Our fences are in bad shape due to floods and age. Horses are about
the only animals who won't escape. I don't know if pigs are Houdini's,
but I guess they would be.

Until he recently retired, my cousin was a firefighter in Washington
State. He told me he and many others were frequently recruited to help
out with California wild fires. Yes, tall dry grass is definitely a
fire hazard.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but that looks like a whole lot of
ragweed. Hope the neighbors don't have allergies.

Yeah, they probably would amble off. If I were an animal and saw
something tempting to eat in another field, a rickety fence wouldn't
stop me.

Yes, that's the thing. Cows can slowly walk through old barbed wire if
they see nice grass on the other side. Kangaroos don't even slow down
and go under at full speed. Pigs would probably also duck under.
Horses are much more careful.

After we had a huge flood a few years ago, 1/3 of our main paddock
came back as ragweed. It was almost as tall as me by the time I mowed
it.

I wouldn't like it either, especially around the house. I can be lazy,
but not that lazy.

Seems like you've got many old bones to pick yourself. You and Janet
from the UK have a long-standing animosity. Quite a few others. Bruce
sucks up to you (so does dsi1), though; you're hunky dory with that.

You seem to only know 3 modes of talking: bitching (your favourite),
gossiping (your second favourite) and sucking up (oh, that's so funny,
Ed). But there's also such a thing as normal talking. Try it!
