Default Tonight's Dinner, 8/24/2020

I picked up a really nice looking pork butt Tuesday at Wally World along
with a can of kraut. I'm not sure what I was thinking but that can was
not enough so a bag of refrigerated kraut supplemented the can. Yesterday
I browned the meat on all sides, added the kraut, a couple of dashes of
seasoned salt, and lots of caraway seed. Not sure how it will taste but
also threw in some baby carrots to get rid of them.

This morning I took it out of the refrigerator and added apple juice and
it is now slow cooking in the Ninja Foodi. This will be served with
squash, sliced tomatoes, and a skillet of cornbread.

I usually chop an apple and add a little bit of brown sugar to the
kraut. So, we're getting to the end of summer and we are craving some
'cooked' food. I made chili yesterday. It filled that spot in my
belly that was nagging for something other than salads, sandwiches,
etc. I ordered the kraut a couple of weeks ago and have the pork butt
in the freezer. I think I will do that this weekend.
Hope your kraut dinner tastes as good as it sounds.

I didn't buy an apple, usually a Granny Smith, but I do have some
unsweetened apple sauce in the refrigerator. Which by the way is
pretty awful, at least it is to me. Some aspartame sprinkled on
top, then stirred in does wonders to improve the flavor.

You know, over the last two weeks or so I've been toying with the
idea of chili. I've got all the stuff here to make it and once we
make headway through the pork and kraut and make room in the 'fridge
I think I'll make some!

Yesterday I bought a 3 LB package of kielbasa at BJs, actually I
bought two packages, one to freeze. Not quite sure how I'll prepare
it tomorrow, I'm thinking simmering with Bushes baked beans. I'll
simmer them first in water to draw out the salt and chems and dump
that water.

Aspartame does a good job in diet soda, but for most uses, I prefer sucralose. I recently came close to running out of the packet of pure sucralose that I bought 7-8 years ago, and I bought another that should last into my retirement. Don't buy Nutrasweet or Splenda. Sure, it's much easier to measure, but the pure stuff is super cheap, like $20 for several year's worth.

Beans would be very good with the kielbasa and maybe some potatoes,
cooked separately?

Try brown sugar instead. I also buy the unsweetened and add
that. That's my grandma's old recipe although she used real
apples from the yard.

PS: and no cinnamon, just brown sugar.

Garish, you're becoming cooking/food dumber by the minute.
Kielbasa is not fresh meat nor is it pure meat. Kielbasa is already
cooked, it's cold smoked... it's essentially a thicker tube steak.

No, I'll pass on the brown sugar and I'd never use cinnamon for a pork
roast with kraut in the crockpot/Ninja Foodi. I think the apple juice
added just the right touch of sweetness. Which, by the way, fell
apart when I used two large meat forks to fish it out. VERY tender.

Ok but I was only talking about how to doctor up a jar of
unsweetened apple sauce. Nothing about a pork roast.

I usually find that brown sugar tastes a lot sweeter than white. I use a
heck of a lot less brown sugar on things to get the same effect.
