I found this news story and was wondering if the man was hunting for
food: >LONDON Feb. 11 — A man who killed a swan was jailed Wednesday for three >months. >Michael Barnett, 41, pleaded guilty to killing the bird on Dec. 15 in Exeter, >southwest England. I would think that this sentence is a little extreme! Evidently, the law is a lot tougher in London than in the good 'ol U.S of A. gab "not a troll" adab |

I was working over there a few years ago and heard that the swans are
protected by the queen. As for the food question, here's what a search happened to pull up- "Swans were seen as a luxury food to be kept for the gentry, and the monarch allowed dignitaries, livery companies, and landowners to breed swans in return for loans or services" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1287818.stm It sounds as though you are in fine company if you're eatin' swan. But the loyal hall porter, Said 'Sir take my daughter, Them birds are reserved for the Dons.' * St Johns is a college of several British universities. David |

swans are a protected bird over here (being property of the crown)
and have been for hundreds of years, so the sentence was rather appropriate. |

Many wild birds are protected over *here* as well. I'm sure you can't just run around shooting swans. We can't even kill those beautiful but out of control Canada geese. nancy |

I realize most Canadians are hard to get rid of, once you're infested. But threaten them with a week without hockey or a KD embargo and they should leave. -- Once during Prohibition I was forced to live for days on nothing but food and water. -------- FIELDS, W. C. |

Penalties for transgressions against pets in this country border on the insane. Cruelty to a pet like a cat or a dog can earn felony convictions with sentences up to 3 yrs in jail. nb |

Swans ARE property of the Crown. I don't know whether they are good to eat or not... Vandevere |
