We bark up the wrong trees in this country when it comes to treating addiction. Bill W. of AA fame used LSD to quit drinking. It and psylocibin mushrooms are well documented in research circles as highly effective for the treatment of alcohol addiction. Ibogaine a refined form of the African Iboga root bark, another psychoactive substance, is a veritable magic wand when it comes to opioid addiction. Ayahousca and mescaline based medicines like Peyote and San Pedro are supportive of addiction treatment. Beyond the physical cravings, all those medicines, when taken intentionally with integration strategies like talk therapy leave all the other addiction treatments in the dust. The same is true for numerous mental illnesses. I hosted an unscripted storytelling project years ago called Ouroboros Story Hour that focused on healing stories using psychedelics. If you heard the stories, and read the research, you'd be begging the DEA to reschedule all of the aforementioned substances...!!!

I don't agree with you a lot these days, but you are correct that the DEA should
reschedule most, if not all, of those substances, and at least allow psychiatrists
to use them in treatment. I know a gentleman who was greatly helped by
ketamine therapy.

Something you might also wish to look into is the use of micro and nano-dosing.

That was NOT me, just some who posted as "John Kuthe". But you are correct, LSD and Psilocybin have shown great therapeutic value. LSD in the 1950's showed a remarkable effectiveness at helping alcoholism and John Hopkin's showed some remarkable positive results for helping terminal cancer patients dealing with their end of life anxiety and dread:

Ann Arbor just decriminalized psychedelic plants and fungi. They're still illegal, but
enforcement is to be given the lowest possible priority.

Psychedelics have been with Homo Sapiens for as long as Homo Sapiens have herded cattle, because Psilocybin mushrooms grow well on cattle dung! And if you were a hungry 200,000 year ago early Homo Sapiens herding cattle and saw a pretty clean mushroom growing from some cattle dung, would you not pick it, wash it off and eat it?

Years ago Dennis and Terrance McKenna developed their Stoned Ape Theory and it makes sense to me!

And for many of them, the effective dose is perilously close to the lethal dose.

Psychedelics are for the most part NOT TOXIC at all! And are certainly NOT addictive! Believe me, they are such a powerful experience that most are NOT ready to take them again very soon. Plus they are cross tolerant with themselves. Once in high school I took LSD three times in a week, and the first time was as powerful as I expected, but the second less and the third even less than that!!
