And if you left the campsit due to a severe storm, why didn't you quickly take down your tent and take it with you too? |

There was no tornado warning, just a tornado watch, not a rare thing on a Memorial Day weekend in Oklahoma. The Motel 6 was 40 miles away. That was the last time we went to Oklahoma for Memorial Day weekend. > And if you left the campsit due to a severe storm, why didn't you > quickly take down your tent and take it with you too? We were planning on going back the next day, and staying a couple more nights, which we did, but we had to drive to a WalMart to buy a new tent. My son wanted to leave right away, and he felt strongly. Our attitude was that my wife and I had made all the decisions so far on our vacation, and it was my son's turn. I stuck both coolers in the tent after putting the sleeping bags in the car. In a normal thunderstorm w/o tornado, the coolers would have kept the tent in place. Luckily, the tent that got trashed was a cheapo one that we'd bought because it was larger than our nice tent. I'm glad we took the sleeping bags with us. The tent was a $70 tent, but the sleeping bags were $300 each. I just retired our old Walrus tent last year. It was almost 25 years old, and had been a workhorse. The new tent is called Big Agnes. --Bryan |

No, no. I ordered canned lentils. They wanted to send me dried. I have dried. Don't need them. One thing canned foods are good for is power outages. I have a gas water heater. I can put a can in a big pan of water and have warm food for dinner. I keep caned rice too. It's Mexican rice. I can get canned wild rice but the minimum order is 24. Only had to get 12 of the Mexican. We've been lucky this year. We usually have an extended power outage around Thanksgiving. Some areas near here did. We didn't. But we are to have high winds and heavy rain today and tomorrow. We might lose power. If we do, we can still have warm food and won't have to eat a peanut butter sandwich. I do have peanut butter but have had no desire to eat it for some time. |

"Substitutions". Is English your native language? If you had snipped less, the meaning would be clear: "Have a Walmart order coming any time now but they subbed a name brand for the Great Value. All of the subs were fine except for the lentils." Slow down while you're reading and move your lips if it helps. Cindy Hamilton |

I ordered canned lentils. They wanted to send me dried. Most got that right away. Sheldon was the only one who didn't (and the others ignored you saying you already had dried). Like me, I normally cook beans from dried but I do have a few cans for fast fixes or storm supplies. Nothing odd in that. > I > have dried. Don't need them. I was getting some 'play makeup' for a ladies kids (3 girls, 12-15). Got some cute crafty stuff too for them. Case of hard times due to Covid. They were about to have little to nothing under the tree so I pulled together about 25-30$ of stuff that at that age, would be fun. Some of it was good enough for real use too. The Dollar store also had the best local price for Utz chips which as Gluten Free (She and the kids are celiacs). Locally some 6 of us take turns getting her groceries when times get really lean. Her company has drastically reduced her hours and the ends don't quite meet. This week was my turn (last was in May). We all make sure a good proportion are shelf stable things. Lots of things in my load and if using smaller meat portions, it will cover 4 for a month leaving her to augment just veggies and fresh fruits. Poor thing was down to 3 cans of tuna, a can of beets, 1/2 jar of mayo and a bag of split peas... Payday is the 25th... Lots of staples so next time, I'll see if the Mexican rice in cans seems suitable. I think they were 2/1$. > We've been lucky this year. On our list for next one to go there, is raw shelled peanuts. Locally best place is American Asian Market and in a smaller load (I was adding to anothers like Laurie is to this one), I tried Gai Lan with her and they liked it. I may go before Christmas and if so, will get her those things. Like I said, there are 6 of us. Her boss promised closer to 30 hours a week next month and while it isn't luxury living, she can make ends meet. It was the 10-15 a week killing her. Maentime, lots of ramble there but I get the 'shelf stable' bit well and ability to heat without electric. |

It's one of the 'bean types' I have been experimenting with off and on for fun. I'm interested in recipes from India that aren't super hot spiced. |

I think those might have been the ones that cooked to mush. Winco has them bulk. The ones that are hard to find here are the small green, French ones. TJs used to sell them but they told me they were changing the packaging and didn't know when they'd have more in. When I used to cook them, the plain brown cooked best. They will go to mush if overcooked, but not like the red ones that seem to go from raw to mush in an instant. I cooked them for 20 minutes in water or chicken broth with a bay leaf or two added. When done, drain, add salt and pepper. |

Lentils are a neutral food for me in terms of taste and texture but... They spike my blood sugar and beans don't. So I don't eat them unless it's just a few put in a soup with other things. |

They are pulses as are beans. Beans differ in the way that they are cooked. They are usually soaked and need much longer cooking. |
