Well, there was that guy the police caught in 'flagrant delecto' with a
pumpkin. Reportedly he said: "What, it's past midnight already?"

You'll only find old and preserved veggies (like potatoes) or fresh
and imported from other areas. Nothing special about a local farm in
January in your area.

Parsnips. If they're grown in his area, they'd be a seasonal vegetable
this time of year.

No local vegetables in the winter here, except storage veg
like root vegetables and squash.

What do you grow when the ground is frozen solid?

Winter vegetables. Brassica's, swedes (rutabaga), turnips, carrots,
salsify. I believe that early spring is more of a problem.

All of which must be harvested before the hard winter sets in.

Granted, it hasn't done so yet (at least in Michigan), but we've seen
plenty of sub-zero C nights. The last time I walked on my lawn
the dirt was as hard as concrete.

Luckily, I'm not a man.

The upshot is, I'd rather eat carrots harvested recently in California
than carrots harvested in October in Michigan.

I just looked at my bag of carrots to verify where they came from. Indeed,
California. It occurred to me it would be nice if they had a harvest date,
but since the USDA doesn't require it, the processor doesn't do it. For
all I know, my California carrots were harvested in October.
