Never mind all this new fangled crapola. How many of you have forges
and anvils? Works during a power outage. No need to fill bottles with
gas. Works up the appetite (this is a food group).

We probably would, but my husband's shoulders are wrecked. He can 't
manage the hammering.

When Forged in Fire started up, he was jonesing to try it. But he
realized it wasn't reasonable.

My niece's husband is a blacksmith. When I heard about that it made me a little dizzy because it does not compute these days - it stunned me a little. I sure would like to see his setup. My guess is that people that have anvils are likely to have pretty bad hearing. The bigger the anvil they got the bigger the hearing loss?

My father had an anvil, and a hell of a lot of other interesting tools.
He was a regular handyman who could fix or build just about anything.

We moved into a new house in December of the year I turned 14. His first
project was to build a work bench and set up his shop so that everything
was ready for the other projects to get the house set up. He put my
three brothers and me to work. We painted the living room, dining rook,
three bedrooms and hallways. Then he had carpeting installed but we did
everything else ourselves. He papered the kitchen and two bathrooms.
Then he dry walled the workshop and laundry room and tiles the basement
floor. We built a rec room in a weekend.

Everything was ready to host the family Christmas party.

Why yes asshole , both welding processes utilize an arc as a heat
source . HOWEVER traditional trade "jargon" refers to the "stick" or if
you prefer the "technical" term SMAW welding process as " arc welding" .
Oh , and in case I forgot , **** OFF .

As a matter of fact I DO have a forge - powered by propane - and an
anvil and several hammers and several pairs of tongs . And LOTS of stock
.. And if I need to move to charcoal , I have the materials to build
another forge , and the equipment needed to make the charcoal to feed it
.. If I need to get primitive , I got the shit to get there . And the
books needed to learn how . ON PAPER .

My guess is that people that have anvils are likely to have pretty bad hearing. The bigger the anvil they got the bigger the hearing loss?

More bullshit . An anvil that rings is OK , but the real test is to
check rebound . If you drop a steel ball from 10" , how high does it
bounce ? This gives a measure of how much of the energy from a
hammer-strike is returned to deform (forge) the workpiece . You need to
research your facts before you run your pie-hole .

Very few are working with heavy steel at home, and still those can be
riveted. For the typical home repair job Gorilla Glue is the perfect
solution... in fact most bridges are riveted, no welds at all... ship
hulls too... welding leads to many failure problems, I'd much rather
use Allen screws for fastening heavy steel. Welding is a big no-no for
repairing dies. Welding is for a quick and dirty repair... for those
who are incapable of fabricating new parts. Modern aircraft is
riveted, and epoxied, no welding.
Welding is okay for ornamental purposes but I'd never trust anyone's
welding for security, gives a false sense of security... repairs with
welding is only a bandaid. A home welder has no way to check the
integrity of welds, that would require a certain expertise with
x-rays.
