And every single time he writes "Da Lou" I think "loo" aka toilet. > Is St. Louis a toilet? Yes, pretty much. Crime is sky -high and the population figures tell the rest of the story: 1950 856,796 2010 319,294 I visited STL a lot in the late 80's and the 90's, many lovely things to see and do. One friend lived in the historic Soulard District, which is very evocative of New Orleans. Another lived in a mansion on Flora Avenue, near the splendid STL Botanical Gardens. There's a fantastic Farmer's Market, some good eating, museums and a short drive will lead you to many scenic areas, such as the old German town of Hermann, with it's wineries and breweries. If you are into rehabbing old homes, STL has a plethora grand old Victorians ripe for the pickings. The Central West End is really cool, with architecture, food and other attractions... But even in the nicer areas, one has to be constantly on - guard with the crime stuff, a big let - down. Most everyone I knew had been a victim of property crimes. Large areas are in ruins, look like Berlin or Dresden in 1945...heartbreaking to see! In 1945, Union Station was the busiest passenger rail hub in the nation. Now, the station is rehabbed and quite nice, and Amtrak has a few trains a day from it's small newer station. It's TWA airport hub was once very busy, non-stops to Europe even, but TWA is history, merged into American in 1999...now Southwest is the largest carrier IIRC... Here's a splendid site showing the grandeur of Old St. Louis, it was QUITE the place back in the day: https://www.builtstlouis.net/ Built St. Louis Dedicated to the preservation of historic architecture in St. Louis, Missouri https://www.builtstlouis.net/northside/map-overall.html "This site is about architecture. It's what fascinates and motivates me, and it's what I spend my time looking for and photographing. It's the one and only reason this site exists. I am an architect and photographer, not a sociographer or a social worker. I can tell you how to build a nice place. I can't really tell you how to populate it with nice people and a working economy and a functional society. I know how to photograph buildings, and I'm pretty good at it. People, not so much. (And I run this site solely in my spare time, which is extremely limited. If I conducted the sort of in-depth sociographic research that commenters sometimes demand, most of Built St. Louis simply wouldn't exist.)... This site is meant to show an honest portrait of these neighborhoods, to raise awareness of what's happening to them, to demonstrate their untapped potential, and perhaps to dispel some myths about them. It is meant to illustrate the high quality of the historic housing stock in the city of St. Louis, to showcase just how amazing and beautiful the city can be. And it is meant to illustrate examples of the urban street in St. Louis, and show how the streetscape can influence the visual quality of a neighborhood -- how it can make the difference between a dreary neighborhood and a delightful one -- as well as the way that poorly-considered infill can damage it... There are plenty of people who like to simply point a finger at the current residents and blame them for all their own troubles (to see this in action, just visit the comments section of any St. Louis Post-Dispatch article about the city.) This is a foolishly simplistic attitude, however, that shows a profound lack of understanding of the complex web of social, governmental, and economic forces that brought about the current array of problems. More bluntly, such accusations are often grounded in flagrant racism, something I have little use or tolerance for... Many of the photographs here are bleak, harsh, even depressing. If I focus disproportionately on the abandoned and the decayed, then I apologize, but these are the buildings most likely to soon vanish. Their short remaining lifespan as well as their extraordinary condition both demand the most urgent attention and documentation..." </> |
