Ok, I've finally taken the plunge and am going to ditch DirecTV.
My Sling TV AirTV Anywhere box and indoor antenna are scheduled
to arrive Tuesday by UPS. Also on Tuesday, I have the telephone man
scheduled to arrive to install an ethernet jack behind my TV stand.
There's already a phone jack back there but everybody on the Sling
users group says an ethernet connection is better for the best reception
vs. wi-fi.

DirecTV just recently went up an additional $8 per month but no new
channels in that increase. With SlingTV I will have about 90% of the
channels I now receive with no contract. Sling TV comes with channels
that are not offered with DirecTV plus channels they use to have in their
lineup but are no longer available. I can change which channels I choose
to receive monthly with no penalties. Or locking into a 2-year contract when
I add or delete to my line up which all the big providers are so fond of doing.

If I have figured my taxes correctly this will represent a yearly savings
of $1027.92. I'll take that!

The indoor antenna sounds iffy. I can't get any digital broadcast channels with an antenna. You'd think that broadcasting would be simple on a rock but it's not. I get a bit goose egg with antennas. It was a big relief to cut the cord for TV. OTOH, I'm still connected to Spectrum internet service. There's no local service or national network services. I miss the old network stream but the kids these days don't give a hoot about that. What this tells me is that traditional cable service will be a thing of the past.

You can usually get a deal from them if you tell them you are
considering dropping them. They will do just about anything to keep you
as a customer.
When I was with Shaw they upgraded their service by adding HD stations
and they sent me a new receiver to get all the new HD programs. I called
them to get a second HD receiver but they wanted me to buy it. I pointed
out that they had provided the two receivers for the old package and
that they were the ones who switched to HD, so they should provide the
equipment to allow me to access the service I was paying for on both
TVs. I was able to break their resistance by asking if they had every
heard of Netflix and said I was wondering about the benefits of all
those extra packages if I already had access to so much more than they
were offering. They broke down.

I eventually left them for another provider. I already had Bell
telephone and internet and they were offering a package that included
telephone, internet and satellite for only $20 more than I had been
paying just for the satellite. I expected that package would go up at
the end of the first year, but when they called I told them that I was
not happy with the so-called high speed internet and the rate stayed low.

Cutting the cable service is pretty scary and you will be jonesing for it for quite a while. OTOH, it's the future of TV entertainment.

Lately I have been watching a lot more on Netflix than on the satellite.

Tomorrow my wife and I are planning on getting 55+ phone plans. She's
55 and I'm 60. It's $55 + taxes for two lines, unlimited talk/text/data. It's
T-Mobile, so the service should be good. I've never had anything but
prepaid, and certainly didn't ever have data.

I have two phone lines, one tied to my house and one mobile through Puretalk for $20/mo that's only turned on when I use it. Right now it's a state of OFF laying just under my 27" computer monitor.

Well, I guess I will find out this week if that indoor antenna does what it's
supposed to do. I'm wondering if a roof antenna uses the same cable that
the satellite dish sitting up there uses?? It would be nice IF I have to opt for
a roof antenna that I could ditch that big saucer and plunk the antenna there
using the same cable and not have to run any new wires. But hopefully, that
indoor gizmo will do it's job.

I cut the cable about five years ago, never regretted it.

The only alternative here to Shaw is Telus and I've been warned off that
company many times. I also still have a landline and my son keeps
telling me to ditch it for cellular only.

We virtually cut the cord a couple of months ago. We still have a very
basic cable package, but we never watch it. Keeping that minimal
package got us a discount that was more than the package cost. I'm
sure the incentive for Comcast was so they could count us as subscribers
when they negotiate with content providers. We still have our Internet
access through Comcast. They're pretty much the only game in town here.
Even my employer uses Comcast for its internet access.

We bought a new smart TV about a year ago, so we use that instead of
a streaming box.

We have multiple streaming services: Hulu, Discovery+, Netflix, Amazon Prime.
So far, it's working out well for us.

Indeed, but you can make it easier. If you ditch your landline and
stick with the cell you soon get used to taking it with you, which
means they can get you and vice versa and thus it also does away with
all those irritating 'help, I've fallen and I can't get up' rubbish
things! I automatically take my phone in the bathroom now when I have
a shower and place it on the floor! Yes it's irritating being old but
less so if you take these measures, kids are reassured and stop trying
to boss you around.

I have someone coming in this morning to give her a lesson in how to
do away with cable, one time purchases she needs etc.

My car was totalled just before a 3 year Sirius-XM contract expired.

I called them and said that I had been thinking about cancelling it for
at least a few months just to see how much I missed it. This was also
true, but I was curious to see how low they would go so did not tell them
about my smash-up.

At least twice he had to put me on hold to 'get authorization' to lower
the price. His final offer was a combination of a few month suspension
followed by a 'new customer' offer which started really low; just a few
dollars a month for a few months, with a tiny automatic increase later.

We recently switched to Dish TV and got rid of cable... we love it...
half the price of cable, far better reception, more channels, and no
utility wire from the road. It worked perfectly immediately and
haven't had to call for technical assistance. Cable TV would go out
after hours and on weekends when no one was in their office, what
a PIA... had to make an appointment for days away and the techy never
arrived on time.

Tomorrow we will switch to Starlink for internet, its speed will blow
all others out of the water... we signed up for it almost a year ago
and now it's here... the carton with the dish, etc, arrived a couple
of days ago. If it's available where you live go for it, satellite is
the wave of the future.

In December, Starlink download speeds averaged 80.67 Mbps and
uploads averaged 17.17 Mbps.

I just clocked 412.9 down and 21.9 up. Starlink is pathetic.

It will be plenty for a fuddy duddy like Sheldon. It's 80 times (down)
and 170 times (up) faster than what we have.

Elon plans to blanket the world so you should be able to get Starlink
eventually. Not cheap though. 139AUD = 109USD

We now pay 90AUD but that includes a landline and all calls to
Australian landlines and mobiles are included. My computer's on all
day every day, so if I want to download something big, it will come in
sooner or later.

I had Comcast about 20 years ago and ditched them for satellite. My gripe,
besides the price, was whenever it went out, sometimes for days, I had to
call and ask for a credit. I'd tell them I'm not paying for service that's out
for days at a time.

DirecTV has just gotten so expensive I knew it was time to look for an
alternative.

I did have to purchase a Roku stick and picked it up today at Lowe's using my
brothers military discount. Cheapest place around here to get one and that
was surprising.

That's a good deal...$55 for 2 lines - unlimited everything.
I'll have to look that up.
I only need one line so should cost less.
(maybe not though. They all like the package deals.)

So you're talking about local broadcast channels only?
I'd like to hear back from you when you get this setup and hear how you
like it too.

How many channels do you get and how is the reception?

C-shenk bought one a couple of years ago. I wonder how her's works.

Satillite TV works diferently in different locations and also if set
up properly. Our Dish TV was set up by their techies and works
beautifully.... we'd never go back to Cable.
We will have satillite internet very shortly, that also depends on
being properly set up.
The Starlink Dish and equipment already arrived, we're now waiting for
warmer weather so we can place a post in the ground, or we may decide
to mount it on our wooden deck.
Some here said they tried Starlink and didn't like it, however I
didn't believe them. Starlink is only available for Beta testing and
only available in very rural locations that Starlink first needs to
check out for obstructions and approve before they will ship, and the
equipment costs $600 that needs to be paid in advance of shipping and
there is no refund no matter what... I don't believe those few Cheapo
*******s would spring for $600 with no certainty they'd be satisfied.
The Starlink dish is a very nice piece of equipment, it's motorized
and contains the electronics to automatically track the satillites. It
also has a built in heater to melt any snow and ice accumulation. We
are very anxious to get it set up and try it out.

I picked up a Roku Premiere package at a hardware store. What an odd place to buy a streaming device. It was 25 bucks. That was a pretty good deal. It works great on my dumb TV.

Wrong! Someone showed you online speed test reviews of
Starlink and showed you it's inferior.

Your best bet is to get a digital broadcast TV antenna and try it on your digital broadcast ready TV. You might get a pretty good selection of local broadcast channels or you might get none. It's a good deal if you like gambling. Your better bet might be to ask your neighbors. Digital broadcasting is an awesome thing but the only thing I can get is nothing.

The indoor antenna will be for ota (over the air) channels such as ABC, CBS, NBC,
PBS, and some other local channels here.
>

At this moment I'm still on DirecTV and I receive about 700 channels. BUT most of
those are sports channels which I do not pay for. Presently I have about 110 channels
but many of those I have blocked from my lineup. I don't care anything for the Spanish
language channels, nor any of the religious channels.

You'll have to ask her.

I had cable 20 years ago when I opted for satellite. I've been very pleased
with the reception and the service but they just keep going up and up
and up but no new channels. The Sling TV Blue package and the two
add-on packages I've chosen will give me 90% of what I'm getting now
on DirecTV but at a substantial savings. There are a few channels in the
line-up that DTV doesn't offer and I'm anxious to see what I've been
missing.

I got the Roku Streaming+ stick yesterday at Lowe's and used my brother's
military discount. It was $49.99 and his discount dropped it to $49.15 after
taxes. But I agree, the hardware store is a strange place to pick up these things.

According to the mobile phone guy at work, it's only available in certain states,
and you do have to get two lines. There are other "senior" deals out there
though.
