Wednesday Dinner 2/24//2021
 

I made German Potato Salad first thing this morning. The rest of the
meal will be Bratwurst and Cole Slaw.

For the first time ever I bought a jar of Miracle Whip. This is
because my husband says my slaw doesn't taste right. Sister-in-Law
says use the potato salad sauce that Mother-in-Law gave me. I've
never used it because it uses Miracle Whip. Tonight is the night.
Gosh Miracle Whip is sweet!.
Shredded cabbage
diced onion
shredded carrot
Miracle Whip
Milk to thin.
No sallt
No pepper
(if you're making potato salad you add hard boiled eggs, yellow
mustard and sweet pickles)
(I had to add a bit of Applle Cider Vinegar to the slaw to add just a
touch of bite)
Cross my fingers, see if it is right.

I grew up with Miracle Whip and switched to Hellman's once I moved off
to college.

As I was reading your post above and saw mention of Miracle Whip, the
first thing that came to mind was its overly sweet taste, and Bingo! -
you mentioned it!

Nope. I have see it, I think, as "salad cream," at a Brit specialty
store or online. Worth a try?

Heinz Salad Cream
"Spirit Vinegar, Canola Oil, Water, Sugar, Mustard, Salt, Egg Yolks,

Modified corn flour, instead of plain old regular corn flour, is a
subtle touch.

I think it's less sweet, in fact it's sharper than US salad dressings. A
small bottle might be worth trying and you won't spend much for the
experience:-)

I bought some once out of nostalgia and my then young Canadian sons
discovered it and raved about it. On trips to the UK. I would buy
several one litre jars for them and in-laws used to bring some when they
visited. It's different!

Yes, it is. I grew up on Miracle Whip, but I can't tolerate it now.

My coleslaw and potato salad dressings use a bit of sugar,
but nothing like as sweet as MW.

I quite like it but it is different and I don't think I would use it
to make spud salad or such. Can't really describe the taste, it's
individual.

I think that in the UK, it was more or less traditional to put a dollop
on the side of the plate in which to dip the salad bits. It wasn't used
to toss a salad.
My sons used it in place of butter in sandwiches.

About 40 years ago, I was recovering from the flu and had a sudden
craving for it (along with Camp Coffee!!!!!) and discovered both in a
supermarket with a big import section. I haven't had that coffee since!!

BTW if you do try it, buy the Heinz version. Some import sections may
have the Cross & Blackwell salad cream which is even more of an acqired
taste.

Are you kidding? Home made mayo is incredible. I don't use enough mayo
to bother making it, but if I was going to be using a lot for something
I would definitely whip up a batch.
