Most houses have garages. So it make sense that if one has no
automobiles, one can use the space for other stuff.

If he uses paper plates, why not use the dishwasher to store things?

Actually, this is a terrible example. Most garages are already full of
junk, with the car parked out front between the diesel snowplow and the
turbo-driven tractor.

I have a question for you Dsi1. Lately, lots of anti-asian reports on
the news. Are you having this problem in Hawaii?

I would guess not. Hawaii has always been known as locals having some
asian blend from many asian countries. No big deal and Hawaii is a to
die for tourist destination.

I would think your islands are exempt from this current anti trend.

???

True. 78F inside with AC is lower humidity than 78F outside with high
humidity.

AC is not just for cooling. It's for reducing humidity.

Many summer mornings, I go outside early.
It can be 82 inside with low humidity due to the AC.
Same time it can be 82 outside and when I walk out, it feels like
walking into a hot, steamy bathroom after someone took a long hot shower.

Big difference.

Comments on civility even back then! There were always some wild
Usenet group

I did not get involved in Usenet until a couple of years after that -
def in the mid 90s, tho, because I recall all the Clinton insanity. I
was still mostly hanging out on IRC and BBS for the most part.

Think we had a dial up here at home- maybe still had one at the office
in the early 90s.OH, and in those days, the thought of a moderated
group was horrifying!

Reddit is much more productive for me these days and I can hone in
only on what I want to read, and keep to moderated groups so the ads
and crap are at to a minimum.

I used Compuserve in the late 80s - GEnie a bit earlier.

Excellent advice.

Even enriched doughs with butter and eggs do not cost much in home
made material.

It doesn't use less water. It also uses all the electricity and it
certainly isn't faster.

I can see one useful for a large family but one or two people can save
the earth by handwashing. Only a full dishwasher load might be
efficient. It would take me a week to fill one up.

Maybe people here seem to think handwashing entails filling the sink a
few times. No so. I stack dirty dishes in the sink and only fill the
dishes and bowls to soak for a bit. Very little water used.

My small pot for soapy water uses about a pint.

I can hand wash my dishes in about 2 minutes, then I turn on hot water
to rinse them all in another minute or two. Put on rack to dry.

Dishwasher runs for 30-40 minutes and fills and drains 3 times. All the
electricity, more water and much longer time.

Not only that, when I used one, I always turned off the "dry"
cycle...just more wasted electricity. After the final rinse and drain I
would just open it up and let it air dry.

Dishwashers are a luxury but not something that saves time or water or
electricity.

Energy is expended to get to/from the store, either human or
mechanical if you are going to buy store bread or ingredients to use
at home.

Baked yourself at home there is one bowl to mix the dough, which also
serves as the proof container. Shaped loaf bakes on reusable
parchment/mat on a stone. No clean up to that except to blow off the
crumbs.

I get the feeling you haven't the foggiest idea of how bread is made.
I have news for you...it does not come out of the oven sliced and in a
bag.

I was suggesting you disable the Agent-generated "4ax.com".

That permits newsreaders which can filter on message-id to
tell your posts apart from Mr Neodome's. That assumes the
Neodome server won't accept newsreader-provided message-IDs faking
individual.net.

You were probably correct in 1955 but very wrong in 2001. There have
been many tests showing the efficiency of a machine

Mine runs about every 3 days at a cost of about 12 cents. The
convenience and cleanliness is worth $1.20 a month.

Window air conditioners can't sense humidity, if too humid all you can
do is crank up the cooling, but then it becomes cold and dank, and the
cooling shuts off. Same occurs when people put in an over size
central air unit, cooling shuts off before the humidity is pumped out.
AC is tricky to calibrate which size to install.

That sounds awfully high. I pay a basic charge but water is billed at
$2.28 per thousand gallons. The meter reads in increments of 100
gallons. So I pay .0028 cents per gallon. Rate goes up slightly at 6000
gallons.

Sewer is based on water. Twice a week trash collection is $14.33 a month.

I abhor waste but use what I need since it is reasonably priced.
Typical monthly bill is $65 or so.

Cheap. My well water is free other than the cost of electricity to pump
and pressurize it. In the summer the well runs low and I usually have
to get a few loads of water trucked in, and that is now up to $85 for a
2500 gallon load.

As far as I know, we're not but it's certainly possible. OTOH, if you're Asian and live on the mainland, you're going to get hassled at times. That's a very oppressive environment to have to live in. OTOH, the cost of living is a killer here and a lot of locals will choose to live on the mainland to escape this crushing weight. In the end, one has to choose which weigh one has to bear.

Why do you hump my posts, Hammy? Get your wide ass back to

Why not? You emailed Dave several times and then called

We have two wells, both here when we moved in. one for our house, and
the other for the rental house that we had demolished, we kept the
well and the detached one car garage. Both wells work fantastically,
plenty of free water. But we pay a small amount for the electricity
to run them and a small amount to have a lab test the water once a
year. With just the two of us we don't use a lot of water, but we buy
salt for the one water softener. Salt is cheap but there's my labor
to lug those 40 lb sacks home and down into the basement. We used to
buy the salt at Lowe's but now we have a Tractor Supply Store in town
and they charge a couple of dollars less and they load a dozen bags a
year into my vehicle. The built in handle on those plastic bags is
thin plastic and cuts into my hand but I discovered that if I wear a
thick leather work glove the job is much easier on my hand.

I wash dishes by hand, two place settings a day is a nothing, plus I
use things that can't go into the dish washer and since I have to hand
wash those pieces anyway I may as well hand wash it all. I use full
hot water and use lined rubber gloves, I don't feel the heat. And
since I find myself preparing food all day every day I always have
things that need washing and so I wash by hand all the time. I find
it much easier to hand wash muffin tins, cake pans and the like by
hand and at the time they are ready to wash. I hand wash all wooden
and aluminum items. I find it much easier to hand wash those few
items as they need washing rather than leave them strewn about as
clutter making a mess. And I really don't care how others do their
kitchen chores, I have my system and I adhere to it.

Aww, they can save time and electricity. You just bought the wrong

Yes. And he still resorts to morphing when he's desperate for those
