I don't understand why you are taking your old computer to the repair shop.
You're a computer engineer, why aren't you jumping in there and fixing this

This is John Kuthe, the guy who is supposed to be a computer

That's not so weird. Hard drives aren't that reliable. I had a drawer full of dead HDs. Another problem with desktop computers are the power supplies, but least people don't lose their stuff when their power supplies die. My guess is that people losing their archived junk on HD is going to be commonplace because people still use these archaic devices. Keeping your stuff on hard drives is a serious mistake.

I was at a place once where someone used industrial adhesive to glue all
the old HDDs from that zone into a piece of furniture resembling a full-
sized 'Lay-Z-Boy'.

A 25 year old computer degree is completely worthless unless he kept up
with technology. He hasn't.

It doesn't take a degree to pull and replug the data and power cables
on that HDD . Many times that's all it takes . I have no training at all
in computers , yet every desktop in the house is home-built . And each
is optimized for it's task ...

This is true. Not that I have a computer degree, but I was employed as
a "software engineer" 30 years ago. Today, I only know how to turn on
the computer.

The problem is that the ability to read these media is disappearing. If you are able to read your thumb drive, your computer might not be able to work with your old file formats. Local storage is a dying proposition. The world has passed on magnetic and optical media but solid state is currently the safest and most reliable personal archival medium - for now.

Not to mention running periodic backups (you can select which drive to
back up) to the external drive. I keep my external drive in a small
suitcase-type fireproof safe (along with essential papers).

I have most everything that's important saved on all 5 active comps
here . Music , photos , software , tax returns , it's all saved on 3
desktop and 2 laptop computers . If a comp crashes and burns , I just
replace/repair whatever fried , reload the OS and all the programming ,
and roll on . And I don't even have a computer degree of any kind ! I
even have all the important updates for Win7 (XP just doesn't cut it any
more , too much software will no longer run on it) saved along with the
programming to install them offline .
Kuthe is nothing but a whiny little bitch attention whore , I don't
understand why anyone even responds to his BS .

When I got a new computer in January I picked up an external hard
drive to transfer and back up my files. It was about $80 for the drive,
plugged it in and it went to work. It was a lot slower transferring from
the old computer to the external drive than it was to transfer them from
the drive to the new computer.

That's probably why you have way more computers than you need.

Also, you don't mention any offsite backup. If your house burns down
or a burglar takes all your stuff, it's Sayonara Snag-san!

Where would we be without offline updates for Win7!

For the same reason you just did. Personally, I see no reason to have 3
desktop and 2 laptop computers. Sounds like overkill to me. <shrug>

Kuthe is stuck in an alternate universe where no one has moved past XP.
The folks at that computer shop will charge him an arm and a leg to
find the "missing" drive (partition) and he'll gladly pay it. I'll bet
he's never heard of resetting the System Restore Point. Probably never
backs up anything at all.

Of course it's useless so why does he keep telling us he's got that
degree? Dude couldn't even figure out how to keep up with Google Groups
when they recently changed formats. He refuses to step out of the
way-back machine. At some point the computer store will stop supporting
that ancient computer. Oh dear!

Dinosaurs like you are being replaced at computer repair shops with
youngsters and users who have moved past XP. Doesn't explain why you
never figured out how to run BACKUP on that drive and oh gee, figure
out how to restore it. You can stop adding computer anything to your
list of so called credentials.

Good Luck with that. I used Windows Live Mail for years and it was my
preferred mail reader, but it was starting to act up and they had
stopped supporting it. When I got my new computers I was not even able
to download it for installation.

Windows Like Mail was a POS!

My XP Computer's D: drive is still on it's HD, I just need the old Computer Repair guy to get it restored.

Bill Gates stopped supporting a LOT of good software, like WinXP! Bill Gates is a PRICK! He should have died like Steve Jobs, from Cancer of the Pancreas, one THE most painful ways to die!

I know, I'm an RN, remember?

I have my desktop , my wife uses a laptop and I have a laptop for
when we're traveling . There is a desktop hooked to the TV for a media
source and the one hooked to my stereo as an audio source is also used
to process g-code for my 3D printer . My laptop is also used sometimes
out in the shop , it has a lot of metal working resources and reference
material stored on it .

According to his endless posts, he should be able to fix his computer since it
is only one of his THREE degrees. We're constantly reminded of how smart
he is and how jealous we are of him.

That is a lot. We have two desktops, a laptop, and two tablets. Oh, wait.
That's 5 computers, just like Snag.

Windows XP hasn't had a security update in almost four years. Can
you imagine the opportunities for hackers?

Most of the XP holes have been filled. And the hackers have moved on to
Win10 - lots more users, likely plenty of new holes that haven't been
filled yet.

Two desktops and a laptop for two people doesn't strike me as too
much. Tablets, schmablets.

Snag just likes to horse around with obsolete computers. Gives him the
feeling that he's in control of something.

A house fire could mess up all your plans for that.
