Michelins are expensive regardless of size. However they perform very well and give more than twice the mileage of other tires. My wife put Michelins on her Toyota CJ and they got 110,000 miles and will be getting another set shortly. The original factory installed tires didn't get 30,000. My 1965 Triumph TR4 came in with Michelins and the dealer said they would add $500 to the price of the car. At the time I didn't know about Michelin tires, never heard of them. At that time the Triumph cost under $3,000 so I slept on it and the next morning I told the dealer I'll pay for the Michelins. At that time no one knew what a steel belted radial was. I drove that car hard for five years and those tires were still in great shape when I sold it with nearly 150,000 miles on those Michelins. https://tires.tirerack.com/tires/Michelin%20X%20Radial |

That was 1978-79 and Michelins were expensive high end. We picked up more dead Michelins than all other brands combine. Remember the tires of the 50s and early 60s. Every car had a spare tire and they were used frequently. Tires didn't last the way they do now. You'd be lucky to get 10,000 mile s out of a tire. |

I have a set of winter tyres on rims that are on the car for 6 months of the year. I have wondered if it would be more economical, on any future car, to run them year round. They would wear out sooner from use in the summer but might be cheaper in the long run, given the added cost of tyres and rims. |

Over a fifteen year period from 2001-2015, more than 2.2 million hectares of forest in Cambodia have been felled – equivalent to almost a quarter of the country’s total forest cover, or an area half the size of Denmark. Almost a quarter of this area has been replanted with rubber trees. |

Michelins give more mileage because they are harder rubber and thus do not perform as well in terms of traction. In my books, paying extra for tires that do not last as long is preferable because no amount of money saved is worth the risk of increasing the probability & severity of an automobile accident. Maybe you don't consider human life to be as important as most of us. |

Thankfully our provincial government has rejected the idea. Most of us are in the south end of the province and it doesn't get cold enough that they really make a difference. The benefits of the softer tire really cold weather are more than offset by them faster wear of that material. I figure that an all season radial with good tread is better than a softer winter tire that has no tread left. |

That's the way it is with tires and guitar strings - once you get a bad set, you just don't trust them anymore. |

Maybe he was speaking about 'engineering'. My hazy memory says that a normally aspirated 4-stroke has a theoretical maximum efficiency around 25% at standard temp & pressure. (0 C & 1 atm). However, supercharged 2-stroke diesel train locomotive engines are in service which achieve around 67% with a 'boost' of 20 or so. Engineer - trains, get it? Seriously, what I do not understand is why they don't use mechanical oxygen concentrators to bring it up a few notches. If you get rid of the 80% inert nitrogen and pipe a turbocharger into the supercharger, just imagine what could happen. Yeah, I know. Hot metal and pure oxygen is a recipe for disaster. We just need to figure out how to make ceramic pistons, etc. |

A 4-stroke engine with one litre displacement operating for 60 minutes at 2500 rpm is estimated to consume 1 L x 2500/2 rpm x 60 minutes/hour = 75,000 litres of air. |

Medical grade concentrators boost O2 to about 90%. I just checked a few on Amazon, a device capable of 10 litres / minute (= 600 litres/hour) takes 585 Watts of power. One would need 139 such units. (75000 / 600 / .9) Weight is not a problem once the train gets rolling. Power used by the concentrators is 139 * 585 W = 81 KW, i.e. 109 Horsepower. How much hp can the unboosted engine you specified be expected to produce using normal air (20% O2)? We're going to boost it's power 5-fold, but we will need to take 109 hp off the drive shaft. |

Individuals buy. A guy that knew what he was talking about told me that once. Since that´s what I already did, I listened to him. Individuals can´t write off the cost of a lease. Businesses can. leo |
