Oh, I thought "they were probably laughing so hard at her they
couldn't get the words."

Hey, wait a minute...
1) No brown bears (grizzly) anywhere near your area. Just black bears
although some of them can be brown color. All bears can be dangerous
though, especially in the spring and mothers with cubs.

2) Bobcats are pretty timid around humans and rarely seen. Never heard
of a bobcat attacking a human. They are not the mountain lions (aka
cougars) in the west that will attack. They are much smaller and go
after small prey.

3) Coyotes are usually loners and won't go after humans unless the
rare pack of them. I've seen a few here but only the occasional solitary
one.

There are always "exceptions to the rule" though.
If you know differently, I'm willing to listen and learn.

You are correct , I misspoke . Been watching too much Alaska the Last

Bobcats are pound for pound one of the meanest members of the cat
family ... yes , they go for smaller prey . Usually .

Tell the coyotes here that they don't pack up . We hear them at all
times of the year , and always in a pack . Not that they don't go
solitary , but we seldom see that here .

This really is some pretty wild country , population is spread thin
out here in the woods . We know for certain of at least 3 bears in the
area , one a mom that had 2 cubs last spring . I've not seen a bobcat
myself , but the neighbors have gotten pics on their game cameras . One
of the neighbors has seen a big cat , couldn't get a pic because it was
there then not there ... he also says he's seen at least one wolf in the
area , but I suspect it was just passing thru . The guy at the end of
our road has actually watched a fox stalk and take one of his free range
hens - I think he's keeping them penned now because the losses were too
great . Everything out there likes a chicken dinner !

I bought a couple of mouse friendly mouse traps once.
Small plastic traps on a fulcrum. The mouse walks in to get the bait and
the trap tips down and the back door shuts and locks.

Good idea but too short. They forgot about the long mice tails. Whenever
a mouse went into mine, the trap tipped but his long tail kept the back
door from locking. They escaped easily. LOL

I still have one too in a drawer.

Don't underestimate coyotes. I used to love to go walking in the woods
at night, just me and my dog. I don't do it anymore because of the
coyotes. Someone on the next road was walking their dog in the evening
and they were attacked by a coyote. It went after the dog. A couple
years ago a woman hiking in Cape Breton was attacked and killed by
coyotes. I have seen a couple cross bred coyotes that were the size of
deer. Apparently there is one in the woods behind us. Father John saw it
and said it looks to be at least 150, and another neighbour told me he
say it a couple weeks ago running down our lane and that it is so big he
thought it was a deer.

Coyotes are not always solitary. I hear them in packs at night and I
hear them chasing down prey. It is a scary sound.

There have been large cat sightings here in Niagara, some within just a
few km of my house. A friend of my son has seen their tracks on his farm.

The people who used to live behind us had a menagerie, sort of a petting
zoo to amuse kids while the parents picked their own berries. They had
a bunch of turkeys that free ranged during the day and were penned at
night. They went away one weekend and, not having lost any birds to
predators, left them out. When they got back two days later their
turkeys had all been killed and eaten.

I have one that they have to do all the way into in order to get to the
bait and then they are electrocuted. No blood to clean up, no live
mouse to find his way back in.

Well yeah , but then I'm not a chicken ... 'sides , if there's any
question in my mind that a dangerous animal is in the area and acting
abnormally I have a couple of black powder revolvers that will handle
anything in this area .

Do you have a special gun reserved for when there's a Democrat
prowling around your house trying to take you liberties?

Good, you got a legitimate answer, because it came from your husband.

People look at me funny when I say my gun has nipples ... these are also
known as cap and ball revolvers , because you ram a ball on top of the
powder charge and put a percussion cap on the nipple at the rear . Mine
are both replicas of the 1858 Remington patent . One in .44 and the
other in .36 .

In 1775, the British demanded we give them our guns.
We shot them

Hubby he

Black powder guns, including revolvers are one of the few handguns we
can now own in UK, unless you have a special requirement e.g. vet's or
stalkers for despatch of wounded game. Otherwise handguns have to have
an extension back from the grip and a longer barrel to give them a
minimum length that takes them out of the normal concealability of a
handgun. The black powder revolvers have become bery popular for former
pistol shooters for that reason but we are also restricted to the amount
of black powder we can own. It does nothing to restrict criminals from
accessing them of course but it makes things look better for politicians.

I keep a winchester 30-30 to shoot buttsniffers. Regulations
require .30 caliber or smaller for dutch ass sniffers. I think it's
some sort of international agreement.

I´m not crazy about the blooming time for peonies or lilacs, for that
matter. In our climate, gorgeous blooming peonies last a week and lilac
blooms last for two.
I had an azalea survive for a couple of years, until a hard freeze killed it.
On the other hand, I´m an indifferent gardener. We planted a honeysuckle,
but I couldn´t be bothered to put up a trellis. It´s struggling.
There´s nothing for it to strangle.

My niece just went through that in Wisconsin. I didn´t know it was a

Don't laugh. Her husband is a reliable source of info in that category.

I've spent a few summers living in the mountains (western Maryland) and
have hiked and camped in western Virginia. If you know about the
wildlife there and their habits, it's safe enough.

Biggest danger out there, imo, is all the "weekend warriors" out in the
woods during deer season each fall.

My last kill...a groundhog at 80 yards from an upstairs window in 1979.
I used a Winchester 30-30. Nice rifle. The groundhog probably had a
different opinion though.

I wonder if a bullet from a Derringer rifle has ever backfired.

When a bullet backfires, does it come out at the other end?

Here is someone's online story:
"Nov 27, 2011 €” I just got back from the range. Loaded a magazine (shooting reloaded .223 ammo with Remington primers). I released the bolt, gun fired, and the bottom of the magazine blew out. "

Black powder AKA, gunpowder, is the same stuff used in fireworks. The Chinese invented fireworks so therefore, they probably invented gunpowder. I can't say who invented modern smokeless powder. My guess is that it wasn't the Chinese. Oddly enough, black powder is still used in fireworks and firearms.

BP is only one of several pyrotechnic compounds used in fireworks . It
is usually used as a lift charge or a burst charge .

In 1775, the British demanded we give them our guns.

Those types are not usually a problem down here in The Holler . Get
out on public land in the National Forest and it's a different story -
from what I hear . I usually just wait for a group to wander past the
kitchen window and select the one I want . Did I mention that I really
really like living out in the woods ?
