Advantage of not having a doorbell. Someone could pound on my
door all night long and I doubt I'd hear them.

What do you think smoke alarms are for?

In any case, the fire department would knock with one of these:

Yes, but your fire alarm is malfunctioning and your neighbours are
ringing your doorbell before the firepeople arrive.

A benefit of living in a gated community (and no, it's not a
"retirement" home, many of the people who live here are younger than I
am and for many this is a second home used for vacations) is 24/7 guards
at the gate. No random strangers ringing the bell or pounding on the
door. If someone comes to the door at an ungodly hour it's bound to be
someone I know.

My doorbell broke and did not work for years. If you came to the front
door I was not interested in talking to you. People we know come to the
side door where I could see and greet them.

Our community has "No Soliciting" sign at every entrance. I have a
photo of one on my phone and a couple of times showed it to someone at
the door. They just shut up and leave.

We have three independent smoke alarms.

I doubt a neighbor would notice our house on fire. We're a little
secluded. So it's all up to the smoke alarms.

I've had people pounding on my door while wearing out the doorbell.
They still get the gruff "who is it?" I try to sound mean and annoyed
and not meek and terrified.
