We all miss our hometown restaurants when we move away. There's nothing magical
about Hawaiian food in that respect.

I can't speak to the deliciousness of the particular restaurants cited in that link,
but we've got a couple of boba places and you can't swing a cat without
hitting a poke joint. Maybe those kids should come to Ann Arbor. Or maybe
they should learn to cook.

I see the local Thai restaurant that was started by expats from Hawaii still has
Spam fried rice on the menu.

I had a very good wedding then a honeymoon in Hawaii.
(this is a true story but I'm joking about it)

January 1979. She finally got divorced from husband #1.
I told my boss I was getting married on Friday morning so I won't be
coming to work. He asked, "So you'll come in after lunch time?"
He was serious too.

"NO! You dummy. It's my wedding day!

My in-laws came for the simple "justice of the peace" wedding so we gave
them our bedroom to sleep in.

They treated us to a "Red Lobster" restaurant dinner.
Later that evening, we watched a documentary about Hawaii.
That was our virtual honeymoon.

The story gets even better:

That night, since we gave up our bedroom to the inlaws, we slept in the
2nd bedroom with her 2.5 year old daughter (my stepdaughter).

My new wife was 5 months pregnant then so she slept on the single bed
with her daughter and I slept on the floor next to the bed.

What an odd wedding day but I was happy.

We have given cuttings to others here to spread that happiness as far
as possible.

Nearly everybody is happy on their wedding day. The hard part is what comes
after that.

Which is why I just snicker when I read about brides who want their
wedding to be "perfect". As long as the paperwork gets signed by the
right people, what happens on that day is largely irrelevant.

Crazy expensive too. One of our friend's son had a nice expensive
wedding. They split the balance of the loan to pay for it when they
divorced.

My son's wedding plans are on hold. He had planned to propose on a trip
to Peru last May but that fell through. They have been waiting for
restrictions to be lifted but I don't think that is going to happen
soon, and there is a bigger and bigger backlog as this thing goes on.
We are expecting another lock down to be announced within a few days
because cases are climbing again.

Oh, good grief. Our proposal took place in the house we were renting together.
It must have been effective, since we're still together 30-odd years later.

I proposed in the car. What can be more romantic than a

Something with a bigger back seat?

I don't know what model year it was, but my mother had a Corvair. In fact,
she liked the first one so much, she bought another when the first one got
totaled.

There are limits on the size of indoor and outdoor gatherings. My
prospective DiL in the health care field. She is a professor of Health
Sciences, so she takes the rules seriously.

My wife and I had a relatively small wedding, just family and a few
friends. The reception was in her parents' back yard and it was lovely.
People still tell us how much they enjoyed it. ... 48 years now.

Mine was the Monza coupe. Never used the back seat but we were young
and flexible. We also used it for a trip to Canada in the fall. We
were supposed to go to Lake George NY but they gave us a crappy room at
the Inn so we left and ended up going to Montreal, Bangor Maine, Cape
Cod MA. It was 1966 and the most we paid for a motel was $18 on the cape.

But it's the one day when they can be a princess! They get to dress
up, they get gifts and they get lots of attention. Plus, they have to
impress the Joneses.

Most brides dream of doing that, at least. Many with self-esteem actually starve themselves for weeks if not months so they can at least look halfway like the Kardashian sisters or another movie star maybe at least once in their lives. They can finally show everyone once and for all and evern prove to themselves that they can give the guests a star to look up to at the wedding and everyone can finally look back on them as being physically worthwhile.

Do you mean "many with poor self-esteem" or perhaps "many with self-esteem issues" ?

No for one day, I mean. Not looking like a skeleton the rest of their lives! I mean, sheesh!

In reality, everyone has self-esteem issues once or twice a day! But that's usually nothing.

Yes.
Far too many people concentrate on the wedding, rather than the marriage.
When we got married, it was just us, our parents, our siblings, and the
minister. We all walked over to the local church, we got married, then
walked back to my parents' house for cake, tea, and coffee.
We're still together, and I'm still crazy about him.

Are you saying he still hasn't *proposed*? Nothing is stopping him from
popping the question, no matter how long it takes for restrictions to
ease for the actual wedding.

No. I said that he had planned to propose to her in Peru. Specifically,
he had hoped to so it at Machu Pichu. He had bought a ring when they
were in Columbia a few months earlier and planned to give it to here
there. That part of the plan fell apart when the travel business shut
down. They bought a house together and moved in together last April.

It's official. They are engaged. They have looked at a few places but
any ceremony and reception will depend on when this pandemic eases up
and we can have gatherings.

Does that still exist, engagement? Sounds so 1950. We just got
married.

I have never said that the foods we eat on this rock is magical. I have never said that the foods of Hawaii was special. That's just a product of your embattlement personality. What I have said is that I can't find our foods in restaurants on the mainland. That's not a diss on the mainland. That's a simple truth. What I've also said is that the hallmark of Hawaiian food is simplicity. That's not a diss of Hawaiian food. That's a simple truth.

At least CERTAINLY not with Spam and Loco Moco.

I don't mind that. It's easy enough to buy a can of Spam or to whip up a loco moco. I would like to get a proper bowl of saimin on the mainland but the chances of that are infinitesimal. It's a simple dish that I would never try making. I can make a bowl of ramen but not saimin.
When my dad was in Sweden, a cook there told him he could make a real bowl of saimin. This was certainly good news for my dad - until he got his bowl. It was spaghetti in chicken broth. That's just a heartbreaker!

Your marriage sounds pretty elaborate. We knocked on the door of a Justice of the Peace in Nevada to get ourselves hitched. The last line of the "ceremony" was "I now pronounce you man and wife that'll be 35 dollars." I had to have him repeat that last part because I've never heard that in movies before. At least he got the paperwork processed. That's a good thing. After that, we went to a buffet.

Yep, people who plan to propose in Peru, specifically at Machu Pichu,
are always a-ok. Everybody knows that.

A single family member probably wants an excuse to throw around a lot of money for high profile ceremony. That's all wedding with a big splash really is.

Marriage is a great institution. Unfortunately, I've read that statistically, 50% of all marriages end when one of the spouse dies.

It's nice up there, though when I last went, it was pretty rustic,
with electricity only a few hours a day up top. Nice train ride along
the Urubamba in the sacred valley of the Inca going one way and a
scenic hike on the Inca trail the other way.

I am rather fond of heading up high to take a look around- Machu
Pichu, Mauna Kea, Toroweap Point on the north rim of the Grand
Canyon....love places like that.

Let me know if you can get a Joshua tree to thrive in NJ. That would shift my
worldview. The desert is lousy with them about a hundred miles SSE of Reno as
the crow flies, but I don´t see any here.

Had one. It was a Spyder. My wife was too young, and 56 miles away, to
propose to in ´62. My parents wouldn´t have liked it either. I was a
sophomore in high school. I got the Corvair used in ´65. It was rear-ended
in ´67 and totaled. Then Ralph Nader showed up.
