Without Marie de Medici, French food would enjoy the same reputation
as English food.

She made a good choice in the end.

I told my kids that if I ever re-marry their new step mom will at least
be as old as my youngest granddaughter.

My two best friends, one divorced, one a widow, have one trait we all
have in common. Don't want to marry again. A few times a year I travel
1200 miles to spend some time with one of them though. Works for us.

Yes. That's because you're just a woman, so you need financial

I can't say if the situation is dire or anything. My son and his watchamacallit have been together for 20 years and have 2 kids together. He's a better dad than I ever was. He's a pretty amazing person.

That's a thought but..... that would make him my brother in law. The
world may be ready for that, but I am not.
Besides, he is too much a loser. Her firs husband was into business
and has done very well for himself. Number two was an accomplished film
maker. Number three became one of the most successful actors in the
country. Number four was a successful business man. Number five was the
dean of a college. John is apparently a guy who has never accomplished
much. He has some sort of degree in a computer field but only worked a
short time at that. Then he got a job as a nurse, but the best he could
do with that was doing temp work for an agency and he failed at that,
and hasn't worked for at least 5 years since that incident. She goes
for the dynamos not the whackos.

Sheldon Simeon is indeed a local boy. Yoose don't like him because he ain't white. You don't care for the Chinese people. Well, except for the Chinese Uighurs - because they're white. That's pretty pathetic, you racist pig!

I can't dislike Sheldon Simeon because I have no idea who that is. I
also don't dislike Chinese people. But the Chinese government is a
fascist organisation.

You have no idea who he is - the only thing you got to know is the color of his skin. Thanks for informing me that the Chinese government is a fascist organisation - Capt. Obvious! If you don't dislike Chinese people why not start acting like you don't dislike Chinese people? It doesn't matter to me either way but quit talking from both sides of your mouth. That's pretty pathetic.

I don't care about people's skin colour. Stop accusing me of being a
racist. I'm a saint compared to you when it comes to racism.

That's not you talking, but the chip on your shoulder. So I'll just
let that go.

I know 3 widows who feel the same way. They all had had to cope with
their husbands terminal illnesses.

If they are women of you generation they probably don't need to remarry.
They got the estate and the pension. They are set.

Is that why people marry in North America?

That can help but in my case, hooking up with my best friend would be
marrying up for sure.

We were friends for decades when our spouses were still with us and her
and I often did things together. Amazing the assumptions people make
when a man and woman do something together. We are 1200 miles apart but
I do see her for a week or so a few times a year.

Seeing each other for a week or so a few times a year can be a lot of
time together.
Seems like you're trying to make that relationship seem very innocent
but I don't believe that, not for a second. A man and a women can't
be just friends for decades.

How little you know, Sheldon. Not everthing has to be "friends with
benefits." I've had a number of male friends in my lifetime who were
nothing more than friends. And no, before your mind jumps there, they
weren't ***. Believe it or not, men and woman can share common
interests without sex being a factor.

His posts are very often about usually crappy chain type restaurant food
served on the "mainland". I don't know why he'd expect a Denny's [just
pulled that name out of my head, not a quote] to serve anything like
what he gets in Hawaii.

If he wants simplicity, aka the Japanese or Chinese, Korean or Thai
restaurants, they are mere computer search away. Of course there is
always a possibility they don't have Asian restaurants in places like
Bum****, Montana.

He wonders why they don't serve rice at McDonald's on the mainland.
McDonald's will sell anything they think will sell within a given
region. Again, probably not in Bum****, Montana. <shrug>

Not alone together... I don't believe that, not for a second. I have
female friends but we don't go off and spend time alone together.

Okay Sheldon. If you and your wife were both friends with some widowed
women (I think Ed and his wife knew their husbands, too) in the same
town for decades and frequently enjoyed having dinner together... and
then your wife died... would you drop the years long friendship? Why?
Because you're a man? Or is it because you weren't really their
friends, you considered them HER friends?

Maybe I haven't been on vacation with them but we have gone out to eat
on more than one occasion. Nothing extra (dessert if you want to call it
that) was expected later.

Because they don't want to be alone with a man who continuously ogles

Exactly. After many years of doing things both together and with our
spouses, sex is not the factor that keeps us together. We love each
other dearly but the most physical is a kiss and hug hello or goodby and
I've held her hand a couple of minutes when we talked.

When I stay, I have my own bedroom and bath, same as when I used to
visit with my wife in either of their homes. If she did not fully trust
me, I'd not be invited to stay.

You're missing out on some good times. Dinner? Concert? There may be
some events your wife would not enjoy but you and a friend would.

Over the years I've heard many stories because I was with a woman. When
people see a man and woman together they make assumptions. Even before
I was married. One of my then fiance's friends saw me go by with a girl
in the car. She told her about it. Of course, the reply was "oh,
that's Rose she carpools with Ed"

Occasionally we had some work related events like retirement parties. I
always went with Lois. She knew she would get home safely.

There are three women I keep in touch with weekly or so. I used to
work with Sue. We go back 30 years. I call her every Saturday morning
and we talk for 2+ hours.

Betty, the first person I got to know when we moved to CT 40 years ago.
Sometimes her husband gets on the phone so we can all talk.

Joan, who I've mentioned. We talk every week but I've been sending her
occasional letters for 40 years. May take two weeks but it is a
paragraph here and there as I think of things of interest to tell her.
I do date each day that I write. No, they are not love letters and she
has shown some to her husband at times, but she enjoys them.

Good friends, truly good friends, are rare and should be respected and
cherished for who they are and appreciate the happiness they add to your
life.
