Very practical actually... President Sloppy Joe is going to make everything FREE -- ya won't need to pay for ANYTHING...

He'll reimburse yer college tuition even if you DIDN'T go to college...etcetera etcetera etcetera...

It's good to see *someone* at least putting their stimulus money
back into the American economy rather than growing their own and
buying Chinese big screen TV's. They were grown in Mexico, right?

I'm using my three stimulus payments toward remodeling my kitchen.
New flooring, cabinets, countertops, sink, lighting, and sundries (like a new
garbage disposal).

It's going to be a very busy spring and summer.

They send money to everyone, & not just those who need it? That sounds a
lot like communism to me.

Here, one is disqualified for Covid payments if one works or does not
have a pension. Otherwise, there would not be enough to go around for all
the 'new' Canadians. (And money from Quebec for 'nouveux Canadiens').

Here it is sort of contest between the feds & the provinces to see who
can be more efficient about spending money they do not have.

Sure, if you define "communism" in a very weird way.

There's a pretty generous income cap. My retired husband and I
fall below it, so we got the full payments. The combined total of
the three payments will cover the new cabinets and maybe the
garbage disposal.

The idea is to give a _lot_ of people some extra money so they'll go out
and spend it. There were additional expanded unemployment benefits
for those in industries that were stricken by the shutdowns. My
military-industrial complex job was deemed "essential", so I've been
working right along.

Good investment that you will enjoy for years. Most expensive room in
the house but has the best return for people that cook.

The purpose it two fold. One is to help people that lost their job from
the pandemic, the other is for everyone to spend the money to stimulate
the economy. There is an upper income limit though.

Then this definitely isn't communism.

Isn't there also something about ownership of the means of production?

That was Marx. I can go along with that to some degree. I believe that
there is a need for rewards for performance. I have issues with abuse of
the system. I understand that he need to have a welfare system to take
care of those who are in need of assistance. I don't think that it
should be permanent situation for the able bodied. If there is work and
they won't do it they don't deserve help. They are just plain lazy and
other people should not have to work to pay for their support.

Yes, all the "Marxism!" yellers seem to ignore that rather pivotal
characteristic.

Many people that did not really need the money gave to charities, food
banks, and the like to help others.

Then you get into the whole can of worms where the cycle never ends.
People living on government assistance continue to have babies but never
work. Those children get to be teens who get pregnant or impregnate and
round and round it goes. That's abuse.

I received "food stamps" for a brief time after losing a job decades
ago. One of the conditions was I had to keep applying for work and I
couldn't turn down work if it was something I was physically capable of
doing.

About that time there was a regular poster here who tried to talk me
into applying for Social Security Disability Income benefits. She said
it was dead easy to game the system. Just claim I have a physical
condition that can't easily be detected, like a soft tissue neck or back
injury, and I'd be home free. Uh, no. (Some of the long-term RFC'rs
might be able to glean who suggested I do that.)

Do you think it will have been assembled by an Uyghur in a

Good use for that money, Cindy. You'll have something to show for it.
Are you planning to mosty DYI the remodel?

I used this last stimulus check to have necessary repairs done to the
HVAC system in the attic before I really have to start using the AC this
year. Last Summer there was condensation dripping through the ceiling.
Not a good thing. The check prior to that covered my cat's vet bill
when she got sick and had a bladder stone.

I'm sure lots of people ran out and bought a bunch of stuff they likely
didn't need because hey, "free money" and "stimulate the economy". I
used mine for practical, essential things.

Mostly. We've got a guy lined up to do some repairs on the ceiling.
The flooring and countertops will be installed by pros. We'll call
in a couple of friends to help us hang the upper cabinets. But other
than that, it'll probably all be done by the two of us.

Well aren't you a cut above anyone else in this miserable world then!

Anyone who spent it on stuff they "didnt need" is of course guilty of
stimulating only their own giant cucumber-sized clits!

The guitars I've seen were made with sound craftsmanship skills. It's not something one can make in a concentration camp. Some Chinese national bought a house on the block where I grew up. They demolished the old house and are building a huge duplex. We call them "monster houses." Buying all the Chinese guitars I can get my stinkin' hands on is my way of expressing my rage against the Chinese and their monster houses.

That makes ZERO sense at all!

YOU are stimulating THEIR economy, not ours!

No point in buying a bunch of guitars. I have a few, but they meet certain needs.
My standard is my 1996 Blueshawk. I have small hands, and the neck is a perfect
fit. I have a 12-string. I have a cheapo solid body guitar that is tuned down 3 half
steps that I used for one song because the chords were 1st position, and there
was a vocal note that was too high pitched for me to reliably hit w/o squeaking. I
should sell that. I should also sell my Samick fretted bass. I'm not a bass player,
and only used it to compose, but my cheapo fretless would work fine for that. It's
feather light, strung B-E-A-D with tapewounds, and has crappy pickups. I really
should sell that too. It plays beautifully, and if a young person bought it and
replaced the pickups, they could get really creative with it. Maybe I could donate
it to a school.

I did make progress in getting rid of stuff I'll never use again. I gave my son my
skateboard, a 9.125" deck with soft wheels, perfect for filming, and I'd be a fool
to ever skate again. We're in getting rid of stuff mode in general, decluttering.

You should have an instrument that allows you to use your abilities to
the fullest. I'm going to buy a guitar with no strings. Would be
perfect for my musical ability.

We were in the same house 40 years. When getting ready to move, I made
a LOT of trips to the Salvation Army depot and assorted collection
boxes. After moving still got rid of a dew things.

I emptied out all the kitchen cupboards yesterday. Why do I have so much
stuff? When I unbox everything, I'm going to start weeding.

Sadly, where ever there is free anything, many people do take advantage
of it. I've known a few people that get SS Disability payments and they
are faking it.

They ask for a job but then say they need to get paid in cash (off the
record) so they don't lose their disability checks.

This discussion always brings me back to Carol here. She's retired
military, also gets disability checks each month yet she has a new job
that pays her over $100K per year. I see something very wrong about that.

Don't blame her for it...I blame the system that somehow allows that.
That's not what it was set up for.

Unless you're disabled in some way, why is it foolish to ever skate
again? You're not *THAT* old unless you want to be.

You could always buy an X-Box guitar hero video game. Comes with a
stringless guitar and you can play like a rock star.

Having worked in a position where one of my duties was to assist peeps in applying for benefits I'd aver that at least 50% of those receiving SS disability benefits are total frauds and should be kicked off the disability "gravy train"...

And don't even get me started on food stamp fraud -- it is MASSIVE...

(snippage)

When I worked for a third party claims administration company that
handled Worker's Comp, Liability and Disability claims, there was a case
of a guy who claimed he'd hurt his back on the job. His boss was sure
he was faking it and contacted the claims adjuster to dispute the WC
claim. He knew this guy was seriously into Civil War Reenactments and
there was a big event coming up. A photographer was sent out. They got
photos of this guy wearing a full military kit (heavy), running around,
falling down, rolling on the ground, jumping back up and charging.
There wasn't a darn thing wrong with his back and his Worker's Comp
claim was denied. He also lost his job and if his employer was smart -
seems to have been - they would have also disputed his claim for
Unemployment.

Sadly, there are guys like that. I worked with one. When another
co-worker was off work for a few weeks with a back injury this guy
decided that was something he could get away with.... and he did get
away with it. He got some time off work and then came back on light duty
and collected a partial disability on top of his salary. His disability
did not prevent him from his job on the side.... rototilling lawns and
gardens.

Some of the left leaning political parties up here are pushing for more
paid sick leave for workers to help the fight against Coid19. They say
workers can't afford to stay home if they don't have paid sick time, so
they will go to work sick and infect others. Sounds good, but I have
known way too many people who abused sick time.
