Well, don't blame the cats for it or anything stupid like that. Did the
inside critters have food & water?

I already looked at your responses re automatic personal alarms, and just
want to point out to you that many have a sensor for falling. Or you can
get a computer-in-a-box like Alexa, and just say "Alexa, Help!".

Did you have any profound thoughts while you were just laying there for
four days? Did you try to send telepathic messages to your cats, &c? I
would have gone just a little bonkers for sure.

Seriously, I can't speak for anyone else in the group. When I wrote the
poem, I had to pluralize the grammar to regulate it's rhyming & meter:

Dear Sheldon, we missed your pontifications,
Insults and slurs, and lame explanations.

Yet we are sheep for your stories of yore,
So please your ass keep well up off the floor.

I'm never really seen that work effectively.

If the dog knows the voice, sometimes it will go to the door looking for
someone. But this only a few times; the sound is not 'perfect' to their
superior hearing.

I don't mind doing it on the speakerphone in the car. At least that way I
don't look like an idiot.

When one of us travels we always let the other know we arrived safely or
let them know we are leaving. Perhaps I'm naive but I thought people
that cared about each other (and the dog) did things like that.

They doubt it will be needed, just rest. I was very lucky no broken
bones, just cuts and bruises.
We were considering getting one of those Life Alert thingies but a
neighbor dissuaded us, could be an hour or longer before they arrive
and if you don't answer the phone they will break your door down.
When home alone it's far better to not do anything risky where you can
fall, and have a neighbor check on you... I see no problem in putting
off climbing ladders and showering for a day or two. It's also no
biggie to phone a neighbor to let them know you are okay. I doubt
anyone falls off a PC chair or off a sofa while watching TV.
I don't have a Smart Phone, just a Flip Phone, but I can't imagine
anyone taking any kind of cell phone into the shower... and if a bad
fall like I had you won't be able to phone anyone or press a button
until you come to... I've no idea how long I was lying in a pool of
blood. I had some bad cuts on my elbows and ankles and a bad cut on
my left ear... the doctor at the rehab figured I was out cold for a
half hour. A cell phone would have been worthless. Everyone at the
rehab agreed that it's best to let a neighbor know to check on you
when you will be home alone... the rehab staff said that it's very
common for falls to occur while someone is home alone, and in most
cases having a cell phone or button to press is of no value if you are
out cold.
The only reason I got a cell phone is in case of car problems, there
are no more pay phones. I never have a desire to chat while driving.
During the more than five years I have the flip phone I used it once,
I called my land line to accertain that it works. I never turn it on,
it's only for an emergency. No one has the number, I don't remember
the number. I wrote it on the phone case. All I do with the Flip
Phone it to charge it the first of each month.

That button is worthless if you fall and are out cold. I had a phone
not six feet away but was unable to use it. The best one can do when
home alone is to have a neighbor check on you.

A friend's son died of a vicious cancer leaving a young widow with 2
small sons. At the funeral, the papist priest gave a hellfire and
damnation "eulogy". I regret not taking him to one side afterwards and
giving him a piece of my mind. Actually, he deserved a "mouthful of fives".

I wasn't in pain and didn't think about food or water, I was just

You claim there was a phone six feet away, you couldn't
even crawl to the phone even though you weren't in any
pain, and had no broken bones?

You're lying about your story.

My mother, who is 86, had a TIA last November and collapsed like
a bunch of cooked spaghetti while just standing at her front door.
She crawled back into her house and laid there for a couple of days,
too addled to call anybody.

No, a cell phone would have gotten you help days sooner. Once you awoke
you reach in your pocked, turn it on, get help. Your neighbor can be
another 24 hours to check on you.

The fall was not avoidable but laying there four days certainly was.
Numerous ways.

Here, the alarm button alerts the service provider, who then phones a
designated local keyholder who lets themselves in to see what's up.
There's a reserve in case the first named person is out.

I'm the Lifeline keyholder for a frail but very independent neighbour
who is 89, lives alone. In 10 years she's pushed her necklace button
twice, in the night. Both times I've got the call right away and
reached her side just minutes later.

For your wife's peace of mind you should get one to wear when you're
working outside. The signal range extends outside the house.

I was never a believer and having to attend funerals of two very good
friends at the age of 15 turned me right off religion and the bullshit
rituals. Young guys being killed in accidents should not be and excuse
for the fire and brimstone bullshit. I attend funerals only when there
is no way for me to get out of it.

Thanks to the modern cell phone, those Life Alert contraptions will go the way of digital pagers and SLR cameras.

Just cuts and bruises but you couldn't move for 4 days?

"Cuts and bruises" wouldn't stop me from reaching a phone. A broken
hip, yes possibly if I'm also old and frail.

>The best one can do when home alone is to have a neighbor check on you.

You're conscious, unable to move much, the neighbour just checked on
you and they won't be back for 23 hours. There you lay, cursing your
own stubbornness.

You need a pair of large, wired breasts in your hallway. If you don't
fondle them after a 15 minute period of time, they can send out an alert.

When I shower (assuming I'm here on my own), I put my phone on the
floor, on a towel. If I should fall, I have a good chance of being able
to grab the towel and pull the phone toward me.

Great idea! I have grab bars but nothing is infallible. I put mine on
the counter but could be a hard reach. Your idea is better.

I do the same, key is not having the phone up high out of reach.

I think I'll have to do that. I fell this morning when I got out of the
shower and the bathmat slipped. Now my left leg is aching.

Yes, but who the hell would answer a call from Popeye? The
dispatcher at 911 might, the first time, but even that's iffy.

He has a live in mexican prostitute, but she gets fed up and leaves
occasionally.

I don't understand why the VA doesn't step in to take care of him.
Hell, he's a national war hero.

I've attended three funerals in my life. One was when I was still in
high school. A good friend who was a year older and had just graduated
was killed a month after she graduated in a head-on collision. (The
other driver was drunk.) It wasn't a fire and brimstone sermon but it
was so damned depressing. Her younger sister, whom I knew slightly,
gave me a hug when I arrived and said, "It's a closed casket. Her
face..." What the heck does one say to that?!

I swore after that the only funerals I would attend would be those of my
parents. And that's true. I'll never attend a funeral again. I've
made that very clear to everyone who matters in my life. It's not
because I don't care, I simply don't *do* funerals.

Sheldon, you'd rather lie there for four days than have them break your
door if you do't answer the phone or their knock at the door? That's odd.

Thing is, you didn't do that. You know to do it *now*.

Putting off climbing ladders is a given. As for the shower, that's what
sinks, soap and wash cloths are for. Since you admittedly don't know
how or why you fell, I'd say it's entirely possible for someone to fall
off a PC chair or a sofa or even fall out of bed watching TV and not
have any memory of it.

I'm sorry to hear that, Cindy. Is she okay now?
