If you like that you might love the Eggnog Pie that my wife used to make
using a recipe for Gourmet Magazine back in the early 70s. Start off by
making a crust with butter, brown sugar and ground pecans. The filling
involved softening gelatin in dry vermouth. Then there is rum and
eggs, and after it sets up a bit it gets folded together with whipped
cream. It is then garnished with chocolate curls.

Don't forget to make mock apple pie. I've made it and found it was absolutely horrible! It's the most famous and most depressing of the depression era recipes. It actually makes you want to kill yourself. Everybody makes it with Ritz crackers but soda crackers might be slightly less sad and definitely less salty. How dumb do you have to be to mistake this for an apple pie? Really, really, dumb.

Do not rule out crackers as a primary ingredient for a quick and easy
dessert. I my sister in law introduced me to saltine toffee cookies.
Lay a sleeve of saltine crackers on a cookie sheet. Melt butter and
brown sugar in a pot and bring it to a boil for a couple minutes. Then
pour the butter/sugar mixture evenly over the crackers and sprinkle a
package of chocolate chips over that while it is still hot. Let it sit
for a couple minutes until the chips are melted and use a knife to
spread the melted chocolate. Sprinkle crushed nuts over the melted
chocolate. When it is cooled it can be broken into servicing pieces.
There are really delicious.

Soggy crackers are just so gross. That I cannot abide by. I have had what you're talking about. It is damn delicious and easy to make. Well, that's what I figure anyway.

It was just a little odd where I was living at the time (San Diego,
many years ago). I've not seen them for sale locally but that may be
because of where I shop.

Reviews are actually good for it. I'll have to hunt but there is a
real recipe from the depression that used applesauce and another that
used stewed apple preserves.

I suspect dandelion greens aren't available everywhere. No doubt
someone somewhere grows them and sells them, although I couldn't guess
what regions.

Let's wait till Popeye gets out of the hospital. I'm sure he has
hundreds of navy recipes to produce this pie for 400 sailors. It
will be the finest recipe in the universe.

This is my backyard about four years ago. The neighbors couldn´t see the
dandies, or I´d probably have been turned in to the City. There are less
this year. It´s probably a lack of rain.
That´s a neighbor´s soccer ball slightly to the left of center. Far left
of center is my swamp cooler. I think I need a paint job. Gary?

IEURTMm at the end of the thread, and not one of you has mentioned Hoover
hogs. They were the protein. Out West, the protein was black-tailed
jackrabbits. YMMV.

The definition of ephemeral is dandelion flowers, peony blooms and mayflies.

Mock apple pie with apple in it seems like cheating. You're right that the crazy kids seem to like it. Those poor kids!

You could spray stain on the fence quickly.

Damn Leo. Here I got the impression that you lived far out of town in
the woods. Looks like you live in a crowded neighborhood.

it is as good as many other sugary desserts.

butter and brown sugar make the start of many good things. sometimes
i just mix them with rolled oats and eat it like that without any
cooking at all.

I have to correct: there are plenty of dandelions here. I should get

But they might have much of that preserved for uses when outside of
apple season.

I get the impression from perusing old depression era recipes that
having 2 or more apple trees in the yard (plus other fruit trees
suitable to the area) was fairly common.

A lot of the 'recipes' are also for preserving fruits in season then
followed by recipes to use them through the year.

Full of funny phrases too like 'beat the egg whites until they submit
to the Lord and make nice peaks' (sounds faintly blasphemous now but
must not have been percieved so at that time as it's in a church
cookbook).

LOL, I did too. Our grandparents and their parents had some pretty
different ways of expressing things.

Hw about 'Bring it to a slow simmer like you are walking a very old
dog'. Laughed at that one! It's actually on the back of a letter sent
back to my real grandmother (her's is on the flip side and it's the
depression so they reused the other side for a return letter).

Grandma was long gone before I was born but she had a beloved terrier
who they think lived to be near 30? Who knows but it was a referance
to the dog and a friend who would have known what that meant on making
a slow rise in temp to a low simmer.

I'm not sure what it was referring to as it is obviously in referal to
a previous letter.

Sadly, all those records are long gone now.

Do you also have a fake grandmother? Was she not really your
grandparent or was she really your grandfather?

Master doctor, why not stick to sniffing her ass, and leave her
grandparents alone. You are pitiful.

Rocket (Eruca vesicaria) isn't dandelion (Taraxacum officinale).

I'm starting to wonder. Maybe it is because the fields around here
are all cattle or crops! Maybe that is why I don't get any! I don't
know what rocket is

'Bruce' has gender identity issues. He cannot accept his hidden
tendencies and be *** (happy), thus he lashes out at everyone.

He is afraid to even mention his last name in the manner normal for a
mentally stable contributing member of society, such as you & me for
example.

Arugula, roquette, rocket. Same thing.

This property is surrounded by common grazings, with cattle, sheep, (and
in recent years, too damn many deer, bringing ticks with them), and
there are dandelions out there.

Does the local farmer use herbicides?

Garden rocket? I thought only Americans called it arugula.

It's not growing in our fields (paddocks) either, but I saw it the
other day in people's lawns.

Local farmer Moi uses no herbicides and we have all the weeds but no
dandelion.
