LOL I've never used a plant-basted alternative. When I don't have sour
cream on hand for use in cooking certain things I've substituted
prepared mayonnaise or plain yogurt successfully.

What is it you are looking to prepare?

I wonder if the sour cream in sour cream and onion
potato chips is real or not.

Have a look at the ingredient list.

I could see using plain yogurt that way. Though the taste profile is
different, nonfat/lowfat yogurt can have a pretty silky mouthfeel. When
I make gyros, I prepare tzaziki for my wife, but since I detest unpickled
cucumber, I just add some salt to plain yogurt for mine. Also, for a burrito,
a well ripened avocado with a little salt and lime juice can make a nice
sauce.

This afternoon I made cheese stuffed poblanos, not the full relleno, but
just roasted, imperfectly skinned, filled with Cheddar, floured, egg washed,
re-foured with corn flour and pan fried. I pan seared a porterhouse med
well, and we split an avocado with key lime and salt squeezed on.
We didn't break out the hot salsas, as we had fried potatoes and eggs
with salsa rojo for breakfast. On our short trip to KC we bought a tub of
great, very hot red, and when we got home I spooned that into 1oz
containers, and froze most of it.

While getting food at one taqueria, we discovered a passion fruit
beverage.

It's 50% passion fruit, including seeds, and the rest is mostly just sugar
water, and a ~16 oz can was only $2 at the Mexican grocery down the
street, so I bought them out to take home.
