You don't know what I post about. You have me killfiled. But I can tell
you one thing: I don't produce 90% off topic posts bashing John Kuthe,
like you do.

Yes, but your replies are just as off topic.

We weren't talking about my "nymshifting bullshit".

Yes, JoC is an American cookbook, but it's just about as far as one can
get, from 'fast food'. I even learned how to skin rabbits from one of
its earlier editions - definitely 'scratch' cooking! It has excellent
instructions for making real strudel dough - my Austrian Grandma died
before she could teach me how, but JoC's recipe turned out just like hers.
I have a copy of every major edition, from the very first little one, up
to the current big, thick one.

That sounds good, but not being American, why would I go for an
American cookbook? English isn't even my native language. Joan, being
from a narrow little world, probably thinks everybody's English

Your English is better than that of a number of the posters here, and
you have a fairly broad knowledge of the world in general, so I would
not have been surprised if you had heard of JoC.
Delia Smith's books are probably the closest UK equivalent to JoC, and I
believe she is known of in Australia.

John doesn't use fake chocolate in the sense that it's artificially flavored.

Real chocolate uses cocoa butter as its fat, the melting point of which
is so low that the coating would melt too soon after putting it in your
mouth, resulting in a naked piece of toffee.

A coating chocolate compound is flavored with real cocoa powder, but
its fat is something with a higher melting point.

The Joy of Cooking is a respected cookbook that has been in print
since 1936, preceding the advent of fast food. It is a general-purpose
cookbook that contains recipes for everything from appetizers to dessert.

The Joy is mentioned fairly frequently by posters on RFC as the one
cookbook they would have, if they couldn't have any other.

I suppose it is analogous to the British cookbook "Delia Smith's Complete
Cookery Course".

But you don't care about any of that. You would prefer to wallow in ignorance
and slag Americans.

Thanks. I think maybe 0.1% of Dutch people have heard of Joy of
Cooking. A bit more will have heard of Delia Smith, me included, and
35% or so will have heard of Jamie Oliver. Smith and Oliver are
probably fairly well known in Australia, depending on age.

I was raised largely on Indonesian food and that was always my main
interest in cooking. I may have cooked potatoes 5 times in my life or
so. JoC wouldn't have been my cup of tea, if I had known it existed.

Do you have any suggestions for an English-language cookbook on
Indonesian cooking? I fell in love with it many years ago, when I spent
time in Amsterdam. I used to be able to stumble my way through written
Dutch, due to knowledge of Scots and German, but I doubt I'd manage that
now.

I'll say this, Bruce... You speak English *very* well. Not odd english
that many have when it's a "2nd language. You do write just like an
American born fellow.

Speaking of cookbooks, the Joy of Cooking is a good one but it's a "wall
of text" cookbook. Same with the "New York Times" cookbook. Lots of good
recipes but no pictures. Good for reference but a bit boring to read at
night. Sue me...I like to see pics of finished dishes.

I've always preferred cookbooks that include pictures of at least some
of the meals. Spot a nice pic then look at the recipe.

My all time favorite cookbook was the old Betty one. Lots of pictures,
cooking tips and many good recipes. My copy is definitely falling apart
from overuse but it's still my "go to" cookbook. After that will be
Googling for various ingredient lists.

I don't understand why anyone would expect a Dutch person to know
anything about the Joy of Cooking, no matter how good a cook book that
is. The world's bigger than your country. Try to understand that. I
know Delia Smith. I've seen a few TV shows by her. Why? Because the UK
was just across the water. I know Julia Child even better and have seen
more of her, both b/w and modern. Why? Because of her connection with
France. And my favourite TV chef is Ken Hom. But JoC means nothing to
me, even though I've seen it mentioned a few times in RFC. So what?

I don't expect you to know Wina Born, Joop Braakhekke or Lonny Gerungan
either.

Real Bruce only nymshifts when you talk about him so you might read his
response. He's not a troll.

Anyway, as stated, I real all posts here. Without offtopic posts this
newsgroup would have died out many years ago like so many others did.

OB Food: Yesterday I cooked some pasta (thin spaghetti) in salted water.
Then I smashed and minced 3 large cloves of garlic.
Browned them in a frying pan with that worthless Pompeiian EVOO, then
tossed in a good amount of bite-sized broccoli.

I combined the two and added 2 slices of mild cheddar cheese to melt and
the last of my dried Parmesan cheese. Salt and pepper for seasoning.

Very tasty meal(s). Had it for lunch, for dinner, and finished it for a
late night snack.

I *will* make this again someday.

No one needs a book for cooking rice with fish heads.

From people mentioning it here, you should at least know it's an authoritative
general-purpose cookbook, and not related to fast food in any way.

I know Delia Smith because people mention her here on r.f.c.

So what, indeed. You show us that you are not really interested in food
and cooking.

Perhaps you should. When I get some time, I'll investigate them.

People who know how to cook don't need a schtinkin' cookbook...
cookbooks are about cooking like paint by numbers are about art.
I find cookbooks limit one's imagination.

I somewhat agree, but they often provide inspiration. I may follow part
of a recipe but adapt to my taste.

I follow baking recipes closely, but for most things I figure the recipe
is a guideline. I may cut back on some things, add more of others. Some
things might be substituted. I confess that my results are
inconsistent, but I rarely ruin one. Most of my cooking these days is
winged.

If your phone gets wet, try putting it in a bag of dry rice, the rice
will attract Asians who will fix your electronics for you.

All of Dave's food is lousy. He has to choose between death and eating
decent food. Plus, every time he eats his joyless food he's reminded that
even with following the cardiologist's diet that he could easily die any day
anyway, and his last meal will likely be worse than that of a death row
murderer.

Hank, it's bad enough to have to go around with a name like Joop Braakhekke,

Respected people would be a pretty short list. The unrespected people
would make a good reality TV show with a long list of characters.

A food related title for the show could be "Assorted Nuts"

I don't know any English books. I used to have my mother's recipes and
sometimes use(d) this site:
<https://tantelenny.com/>. But that's only in Dutch, I'm afraid.

Really, get over your Joy of Cooking. I'm sure it's a good cookbook for
domestic American use. Other countries have their own sources. American
cuisine isn't very important. The only big American food influence is
fast food.

Thanks. Living in Australia has helped.

I don't think cookbooks are as important anymore. There's so much
information on the Internet now. You just have to figure out which
sources are reliable or else tweak a recipe/method you're following.

That's it. When people who I know/think have me killfiled start talking
about me or to me, I'll nymshift, otherwise I can't say anything back.
But I've never used anybody else's name. My current name sounds a bit
feminine, but otherwise I like it.
