What's with this *MY* toffee crap? You made it, sure, but you got the
recipe from 'The Joy of Cooking'. You're about the only person I've
ever heard of who would eat candy with coffee in the morning. (Time of
post: 8:29 AM.)

I never knew I couldn't eat candy with coffee in the morning. Not that
I often do, but I thought it was optional. So thanks, Jill!

Almost burnt is *not* what 'The Joy of Cooking' recipe calls for.
You're getting sloppy if you let it reach that stage.

35+ years to learn how to ooops, almost burn the toffee? You might like
it but try to give that to your future constituents when you run for dog
catcher.

Wow. A nutritional powerhouse! Denatured (through excessive heat)
butter and cream, from mainstream dairy (ie. omega 6 way too high and
out of balance from an industrial corn based diet). Plus sugar.
Awesome, just awesome.....lol

Morning coffee and donuts seem to be popular here.
Go in a 7-11 store on weekday mornings between 7-9 AM and many people
are in line holding a cup of coffee and a couple of donuts.

I always have some coffee but no donuts. I'll eat those for a dessert in
the evening.

No food for me until at least 12 noon.

Around here it is Tim Hortons. They now all have drive thru and there
may be 15 or more cars waiting in line for coffee and donuts.

I don't like donuts, I'd never wait in line for fried dough.
I prefer my morning coffee at home, I've never had satisfying coffee
at any restaurant. When traveling I bring my small electric
perculator and my own coffee.

So they have transferred their lousy service from inside to the take-out
window.

Is my memory just flat out wrong, or was it decent way back in the
day? I recall Canadian trips when the kids were young and we all loved
the donuts. I do admit that on my last trip a few years ago everything
was ghastly. I just thought it was a poorly run location.

I very rarely go there. When I was working I grabbed coffee there 2-3
times a day. Now it's more like once every month or two. Their coffee
used to be good. Their donuts were good. Their coffee has gone down the
tubes. They are desperately trying to convince us that they have
improved. They changed from freshly fried donuts to that shitty par
baked system and the donuts are not tiny. Forget it.

I used to right my bicycle into town daily and would go to the Hortons
there for a coffee and do my crossword. They closed that one and
replaced it with a drive thru. It was the best thing that ever happened
to me. I discovered the corner coffee shop. Their coffee is a little
more expensive but it infinitely better.

They par cook them and then finish them off at the resto. Whenever I
have tried a TH, the line is long and *doesn't move*!!! The service is
lousy, not because the temporary foreign workers behind the counter are
lazy but at each location I've seen, they are totally disorganised - a
serious management problem.
BTW a Brazilian conglomerate now owns the chain.

In ancient times Dunkin Donuts was a decent New England and environs
brand that baked everything in store. People went there for the donuts
and the coffee was secondary and sandwiches were not a big part of the
biz. They decided they wanted to be everything to everyone and
expanded and franchised and conglomerated and merged and yadda yadda.

The donuts are inedible now. Damned shame.

That is pretty much the Tim Horton's story. They sold coffee and
donuts, more than 20 varieties of donuts. Then they did muffins, then
cookies. Somewhere along the way they did cakes and that was a flop. Now
they have soup and chile and horrible sandwiches. The par baked donuts
are small and they horrible. Yet, a lot of people are very loyal to them.
