I agree. Meals consisting of only meat/fish and carbs are for
children's parties.

I don't eat lettuce because I think it's healthful. I eat lettuce because I
enjoy it.

I can happily eat such meals. I can also happily sit down with a huge
amount of lettuce, some tomatoes, and maybe a lemon or lime to
squeeze on, and call that a meal. Usually I also add some grated grana
type cheese, but not always. Sometimes a "meal" is just fried potatoes
and eggs. Other times it's a whole bag of Mandarin oranges. I love
vegan stir fries by themselves with no starch. That's not a *balanced*
meal either.

One of my favorite meals is a giant bowl of well cooked green beans
with some crumbled bacon and S&P, but if there's no bacon in the
house, I can still stuff myself with the green beans and that's a meal.
Sometimes I just have a big bowl of Basmati rice with tamari and
cayenne pepper sprinkled on, and that's lunch. There's no right or
wrong.

You don't know nothing about Hawaiians and you don't know nothing about me. Mostly you're fantasizing wildly. It's pretty obvious that you spend most of your time in fantasyland. I'm not into that make-believe shit. Quit wasting my time. Yoose gets the last word.

I love the last word, thanks. Statistics show that Hawaiians eat better
than you and better than you think.

No, I've never been to Japan and I doubt dsi1 has, either. Generally
speaking... I don't know what kids you're talking about. No pizza, just
cake and ice cream at home with friends. Gifts received and games played.

I'd call them fish sticks too, but I thought the English speaking world
called them fish fingers. Ah, here's Wikipedia:
"Fish fingers (British English) or fish sticks (American English) are a
processed food made using a whitefish..."

Okey doke! You were a strange child. (j/k) I only remember one
birthday party and that was when I was 6. Cake & ice cream.

I do make a nice salmon recipe with flaked salmon to fill large seashell
pasta with a cream sauce. Never would think of serving it to children
at a party, though. <shrug>

It probably won't change your opinion about fish at kids' birthday
parties, but the patty shells we had are made with puff pastry.

Yep. I know what they're made from no matter what you call them. Still
can't picture them at a kid's party. The ones sold frozen are mostly
breading and not very good.

Well you asked What we in the USA call "fish sticks?", so I answered

I like coleslaw but not cabbage under fried foods like tonkatsu or chicken katsu. That stuff is icky and soaked with oil. Sometimes you can't avoid it and I'll accidentally eat a little.
I'm going to yakiniku restaurant tonight. There's probably not going to be any salad there either. I suppose they'll be some kim chee. I'll eat a little salted cabbage in Japanese restaurants i.e., tsukemono. Tsukemono is some pretty sublime stuff because I only eat it a couple of times a year. Eating a salad on the side would mostly be for Western style dining.
We got a couple of containers of salad greens but I've never had any. That's for the pet turtles and the hamsters, not for us.

Then you're dealing with a bad chef, cook or food preparer.

If it was sublime, I'd eat it more often.

"Us" is you. Hawaiians eat healthier than you. But we already knew

I would eat it, but it would not be my favourite part. My wife likes
cabbage and cooks it often. Sometimes I have some and sometimes I don't.
She usually cooks a little extra in case I want some.

I'm not an anti-meat person by any means... some sausage or bacon cooked
up in fried cabbage is a winner to me!

I like cabbage as much as next guy. In this case, the cabbage is used to absorb oil in fried foods so the hot pieces are laid directly on top of the cabbage. That's just the way things are done on this rock. If the cabbage is served on the side I eat it, if it's on the bottom I won't.
I don't eat that much cabbage but I will make a Korean cabbage pancake occasionally. That's good eats! I had a spicy cabbage salad last night at the yakiniku restaurant last night. It was pretty awesome. I think the dressing was crispy chili oil with a little sugar, salt, soy sauce, and MSG. It was a simple little thing but intriguing.

Go to better places to eat. Unless they all make you sick anyway. Then
just continue spending as little as possible.

LOL, yes the cabbage that way sounds icky. But seriously, I'm big on
veggies so for me, I'd have ordered the coleslaw since that was all
they had.

Main 'Birthday' dinner for us was eaten out. There's 4 days between my
brother's and mine and Mothers day falls very near. We'd pick the
middle day, call it 'Charlottes Day' (her birthday is in Dec so she
always gets a bit shorted). We'd have gifts for all of us and open
them at the table.

Since we were all very well behaved kids when eating out and cleaned up
the wrapping mess, the staff were charmed. Mom would stash a cake she
baked with the staff and they'd bring it out with 3 candles for us kids
to blow out.

The dinner was normally a reasonably priced steak place. Varied with
where we were but upscale of Denny's but not super fancy.
