Default Penzeys for Christmas!

I've been wanting a real pepper grinder, one that is solid in the hand and
lets you adjust the grind, for years. I've been lusting for a grinder from
Penzeys since I saw them years ago but since I had an el-cheapo pepper
grinder that was ok, not great mind but ok, I couldn't really justify
spending $30 on a grinder and whatever the heck it's going to cost to ship
it here to Canada. sigh

However! My old grinder is now on its last legs. YAY!!
<happy dance!>
I took the plunge this morning and ordered one of the fancy-schmancy pepper
grinders from Penzeys for myself for Chrismas. I got all enthusiastic and
figured that in for a dollar in for a pound on the shipping and ordered one
for my sister for Christmas as well.

Fresh pepper on that anyone?

I use a stone mortor and pedstle(sp?) I picked upat an SCA event in
PA. I like it because I can grind spices any way I like from crunchy
to powder. Besides, like my half-pound meat mallet it works off a lot
of stress. It only costme $10 US.

Yeah, right... every time you need a pinch of pepper... you can't even spell
*mortar* OR *pestle*, do you really think anyone believes you.

Oh awesome! I recently got a little pepper/salt mill and wish I had spent the
20-30$ more for a larger one. The one I got for 20$ is good for the table but
doesn't grind enough pepper per turn to be very useful for cooking *pouts*. I
will have to get one of the nicer ones soon- my hand is wearing out!

*cheers*

I've got one of those crank-type coffee grinders that I use exclusively for
pepper. I can crank out several tablespoons in no time flat.

Froogling...Okay, here's what I've got:

Oh that's a great idea! I have one of those electric grinders devoted to
spices, but it's such a hassle to clean every time I want pepper (which is
every time I cook *laughs*)

I might pick up one of those instead of another peppermill. Thank you for the
link!

*cheers*

You are probably right, but at least with the Penzey's
grinder you can use it at the table without feeling like
a hovering waiter with the two-foot-long grinder asking
"Would you like pepper on that?"

I have the larger Penzey's grinder, and it's the second
best one I have ever owned.

I have a morter and pestle, two in fact, a big heavy duty one and a smaller
one. I grind a lot of my own indian spice mixes in them but I needed
something faster & easier for pepper that I can also use at the table.
As for working off the stress... well, you may have a point there...

I knew someone would ask. The best grinder I ever had was a
table-sized one bought about 30 years ago. I still have it,
and the matching salt shaker. The grinder mechanism is
engraved "Verity-Southall, El Segundo, CA." Much of the
black finish is worn off and it's terrible looking. The
screw threads are now quite worn, but it still is OK for
cooking.
