My loved one has no dire symptoms of a chronic disease. Minor symptoms we can
mostly handle. We have flourished this long, despite not having full-time employment. We hope we will soon. We have gifts of imagination, good spirits, and the ability to enjoy small things. E. P. |

Our children cooked up The Best Thanksgiving Ever for us, for me, this year. A week ago, Sunday, I received this email from Chris in reply to my inquiry of his Thanksgiving plans. He's been in AZ for 12 years and for the last 10 has prepared turkey and dressing for himself and friends: "Oh, hello, that's this week! I just got back from picking up my turkey---got a 16-pounder this year, which is pretty big, but nothing compared to the 20-pounders I usually get. I'll be having dinner with some good friends of mine here, the couple that just had a baby. A few other friends of ours are joining us. We probably have too much turkey for the group that's eating dinner that afternoon, but certainly not too much for the fridge. :-) I'm also making the dressing---separate from the turkey, as usual---and some mashed potatoes. Think I'm gonna try red potatoes this year, maybe leave the skins on. Broccoli is the vegetable, plus a salad of some kind. We'll probably watch Star Wars all day, which used to be our tradition a few years back and which, now that the DVDs are out, can be so once again. I'll give you guys a call Thursday. You'll be at Becky's, right? I'm sure I'll have to call you Wednesday night as I'm prepping the bird, too. Will you be at Beck's then, too, or still in Burnsville?" We arrived at Girlchild's around 1:30 on Wednesday afternoon. Kid was napping, Beck was downstairs somewhere -- she's usually out the door help unload the car -- unseen. I saw the light on in her crapbook room, figured she was there doing her thang while the kid napped. Rob got the car emptied and went down the stairs to see her. I heard him say, in a rather casual tone, "Well, isn't this a nice surprise." I had a fleeting thought of Chris then dismissed it -- Jamie took the day off, too, I guess. Then I heard Rob say, "Gee, it's good to see you, Chris." HELLO??? CHRIS? HERE? I went downstairs and there he was. I was stunned! He's not been home at Thanksgiving in 11 years. I was dumbstruck. I had my kids with me at Thanksgiving! Holy balls! They told an amazing story of Beck and Sam driving to MSP (airport) on Tuesday afternoon to fetch Chris at 3:30 and return to the northland. Only Chris' flights were delayed along the way and he didn't get in until 7:30. Small Child was napless ("I so 'cited! Uncle Chris coming.") and behaved like a trooper in spite of it. Fetching Chris took an hour longer than it should have because Beck didn't know his flight number or airline (OK, they're not *perfect.*) and went to the charter terminal instead of the main. She and Sam took a shuttle and tram to get to the main. Then, of course, they had to go back to get her car after collecting Chris and baggage. She really went the extra mile to pull off their surprise. Somewhere along the way, I did something right in raising those two. The two of them prepared Thanksgiving dinner -- my goal of serving in the role of consultant was achieved. Chris did the turkey and dressing and gravy; Beck did most of the rest. I'd brought cranberry sauce, cooked wild rice, and our sweet potato. Jamie's mom brought ham and pies. Jamie's dad carved Birdy for the table. Jamie arrived home from playing football (he'd left at about 8:30) just as we were about to sit to table. I'm gonna have to have a talk with that boy. If his mother doesn't nail him first. :-) On Friday afternoon, Rob, Beck, Sam, and I went to see The Polar Express. It was about 50 times better than I'd expected it to be. Here, have a good laugh at my expense: In the scene when the kids are about to slide off Santa's toy sack, the Helpers are helping them. Helpers are standing on each others' shoulders and hopping from one to another and I'm thinking, "Man, those guys are really good to have that balance." It didn't hit me until about 20 minutes later that they were animated characters, digitally produced. <smacks head>. Chris goes home tomorrow. It's a treat having him here. I'm so lucky to have such a fine family. Enough. I've posted only a couple pictures so far to my web page -- there's a great picture of the Dancing Queen. Supper tonight (Sunday) is Polish sausage from Kramarczuk's, kraut, boiled potatoes, caraway rye bread. It's gonna be some good. -- -Barb, <www.jamlady.eboard.com> Updated 11-28-04; Sam I Am! birthday telling. |
