Default Newest food diet fad

I've been on this earth some time, and seen several diet fads:


1. Reduce sugar. I think that there was good dietary advice to cut down
on "sweets". Of course, most desserts get most of their calories from
fat, but since "sweets" usually have less food value than other foods, it
makes sense to cut down on "sweets" first. That's a real easy way to
figure out how to reduce calories. Unfortunately, people got real weird
about this. You would hear people refer to the "good and healthy"
breakfast they had. Three eggs, three pieces of bacon, greasy potatoes,
toast with butter and coffee with heavy cream. The healthy part? They
replaced the one teaspoon of sugar in their coffee with a substitute.
Savings? 18 calories!

2. Reduce fat. Fine, but when you look at how people did it, they always
added even more sugar to compensate. And then the food people made zero
fat foods by reducing the portion size and reducing fat to 1/2 gram, which
they could advertise as zero. Of course, people would eat 5-6 portions at
time, since the portion size was ridiculous.

3. Reduce carbs. I don't understand this one too well, but certainly
people who consume 7 portions of carb in a meal aren't doing well. But
now you hear of people consuming enormous portions of meat and fat and
calling it a "good diet".


So, what do you folks think the next fad will be, or will we just start
the cycle over again? Low moisture? I had an office partner who always
went pee right before getting weighed at the doctor. A pint of pee weighs

I hear you! I actually recall seeing an article or
infomercial about water content in food as a new
diet and we should all be eating water rich stuff.
Well...sure, but you can only eat so much fruit
and lettuce before you're really jonesing for a

I knew someone who was in a competition with a friend, who could lose
the most in such and such an amount of time. Before weigh in, guess
what they did? Donated blood. To lose weight. How bizarre is that?

Low carb diets are usually misunderstood and sometimes misused. The diet is
not a license to eat as much meat and fat as you want! Properly done, a low
carb diet will include more vegetables than most people eat and lots of
seafood. Low carb means "low carb," it does not mean excessive fat or meat.

You make a good point, but this is true of all reasonable diets, not just
low carb. That was *my* point, that some people take reasonable diets and
twist them all around so they are barely recognizable, so people can eat
whatever they want and still claim that they are eating a "good diet".


I'm sure we've all had the experience of talking to someone who's idea of
dinner is three pork chops (with the fat) and three chicken breasts (with
the skin) and nothing else, who claim with a perfectly straight face that
it's OK because they're on a "low carb diet".

Reminds me of a joke I invented when I was around six years old. I
thought it was hilarious and would pull it on anyone who would listen.

Me: "Hi, do you like hamburgers?"
You: "Yes, I do!"
Me: "Oh goody. I'll eat the ham and you can eat the boogers!"
And, I would laugh and laugh.

A variation on this joke would be about cheeseburgers when my audience
would thin out.

OMG, I'm embarrassed to admit this.

A coworker friend and I used to donate every 56 days (minimum amount
between donations) because of this very reason. We thought were
ridiculous and laughed about it but we felt thinner afterwards and
we'd not feel guilty eating the cookies and juice they give you. We're
both up to have had donated several gallons each over the years.

heck, I donated blood a month ago. But, the weight-loss feeling
novelty has worn off.

1200 calories) and pass out. No hunger pains, all natural, and the
kidneys get a workout.

I'm kidding, of course - I happened to remember that from an old B.C.
cartoon from way back. IMHO, there's no substitute for moderation in
everything, including portion size, and regular exercise.

actually, i like zucchini in stir fries.
a nice crunch. and they're cheap.

possibly i was frightened by gourds the size of baseball bats that a
co-worker often brought in.
