Remember John Kerry?
He now has a fabulous napkin shop on the north side of Boston for all the
"fluffy" types.

For someone named Tush-R-Me the only proper placemat is a Depend.

Sorry -- there are no placemat makers' name brands I'm aware of.
So shop online -- check out Linens 'n' Things or any of the department
stores -- there'll be lots to choose from, from readily washable to
frou-frou that are geared for flashy looks on the table.

Are you swimming in money? Do you want to impress or do you
just want a decent set of placemants?

Are you out in the boonies or can you make it into a
department store? You'll find a good selection in the
houewares department.

If you were willing to leave your house, you could go to
http://www.tuesdaymorning.com/

Since you don't want to leave the comfort of home, try
Linens & Things

Don't all (most of, any way) those places mentioned have websites?
Try www.(type in the store name, without any spaces).com

Good luck.

I do live in Chicago. I plan to shop online, so I guess the location
doesn't matter. However, I posted to chi.general just in case someone
points me to some fantastic sale at a great local outlet. :-) I am not
a regular in that group, but may have posted before, can't be sure.

That is life's irony. Those who know enough to be specific probably
don't need to ask anyone. Those who have to ask often don't know what
to ask...

Anyway. I had meant manufacturers. Big name retailers are obvious
enough, as many have pointed out. However, if somebody knows of a
great deal at some Chicago boutique/outlet or an obscure online store
or a small museum somewhere, let me know.

I find bamboo placemats nice and practical. Look for mats that have
their ends bound with some fabric otherwise they start unravelling;
the ones bound with silk look elegant too. They wipe clean with a damp
sponge and look good forever. You should easily find these at most
Thai stores, I have seen them at Pottery Barn too.

Hope this helps,
K.

I have no idea. I suppose its a matter of personal taste,
but I have found nice place mats at dollar stores. You
can't get more practical than that, and elegance is
entirely in the eye of the beholder.

Stan's one of the cooler guys on rec.food.cooking, pete...he loves ketchup,
Heinz specifically...he's a cat lover, too...

BTW I'd add that if you have a pair of scissors and some vinyl sheeting you
could prolly run up a bunch of placemats...buy a roll of that ribbed plastic
shelf lining and make placemats out of that...not only thrifty and practical
but very "minimalist" cool...

My neighbor makes custom placemats (and, I think, purses). Might be tough to
get by Christmas - don't know what her turn-around is.

A hand-made thing is going to be a better gift than something from Target.
