Glad to hear your opinion. I have heard many people say they LIKE Subway because the bread is so good. In some cases it is because they never had, in their entire life, a piece of really good bread. I still yearn for the days when I got a good sandwich on a roll baked by Veccione's in Philly. Sometimes the hoagies shop would run out of rolls. It was delivered fresh every day, you never got yesterdays rolls. Ed |

The only way I would expect them to run out of a type of bread would be after the lunch rush, the dinner rush, or right before closing time. The OP never said what time he was there. BOB |

What this guy offered seemed real, but I wouldn't know for sure. My next plan is to go to Mexico and avoid the water when it's all cold here. I would like to swim in the ocean and eat good food. |

Until a got into baking my own bread and got to the point where I understood more how good bread could be I probably would have thought what they had at Subway was good. I've only been to Subway once or twice and that was years ago, but what I recall is that the crust of their breads has a little more body than a standard sub roll, but the crumb was typical at best. -Mike |

A friend and I were going to the nude beach at Sandy Hook, so we stopped at a Jersey Mike's and asked if they could make us a sandwich for the next day. They opened early that morning, we picked up our Italian sandwich and we went to the beach. This sandwich was so good we went back to Jersey Mike's to get another one. Did you know they have a Jersey Mike's in Houston on Kirby? Becca |

Not every place in Philly makes a good cheesesteak (and getting worse every year) but there are some very good ones around the country now. I like the ones from Papa Gino's. They come as close as any I've ever had when I lived in Philly. Good bread is important though, not some of the Wonder Bread types of rolls that are very popular now. |

Brings back memories. There used to be a wonderful local ma/pa italian market and deli near where I worked in the 60s and early 70's. They had the best subs I ever ate. They closed th market in the late 70's but due to the popularity of the subs, they sold the sub shop as a franchise. The food was not the same under the new owners. compared to the original owners food, I couldn't eat the new subs. They were completely different. Still, the food was better than most fast food and, even if the old patrons no longer could eat it, the new owners made good business from new patrons who had never tasted the original owners subs. I have yet to find a sub shop that matches the food at that Italian market and deli. |
