Glad to hear your opinion. I have heard many people say they LIKE Subway
because the bread is so good. In some cases it is because they never had,
in their entire life, a piece of really good bread. I still yearn for the
days when I got a good sandwich on a roll baked by Veccione's in Philly.
Sometimes the hoagies shop would run out of rolls. It was delivered fresh
every day, you never got yesterdays rolls.

The Subways around here bake their bread in the store constantly during the day.
The only way I would expect them to run out of a type of bread would be after
the lunch rush, the dinner rush, or right before closing time. The OP never
said what time he was there.

I never lived in Philly so never got a true cheesesteak. If I can ever visit
there, you know what I will order. What this guy offered seemed real, but I
wouldn't know for sure.

My next plan is to go to Mexico and avoid the water when it's all cold here. I
would like to swim in the ocean and eat good food.

god help me, i'm going to cite facts from when i actually worked at a
restaurant-type place. well, a pizza joint.

fred and eva haas, according to the radio and print ads, made their

of course, this was the day before.

The operative word is "baked" in the store. It comes I think frozen
from local or regional commercial bakery.

This is somewhat understandable. It is not all that easy to find really good
bread. Until a got into baking my own bread and got to the point where I
understood more how good bread could be I probably would have thought what
they had at Subway was good. I've only been to Subway once or twice and that
was years ago, but what I recall is that the crust of their breads has a
little more body than a standard sub roll, but the crumb was typical at
best.

Got news for ya....as long as they are using fresh bread, good meat,
good cheese and well-cooked onions, peppers, etc, and they are
grilling it, you're getting the "real thing". I finally got to Philly
last summer and had a "real" Cheese Steak sandwich. Delicious!!!! But
no different than the better ones I get here in CT. I'm not sure what
I expected to be different, I mean, it's steak, cheese, bread,
onions...what could be different? I think I expected some sort of
epiphany or something, but truth be told, and I don't want to offend
any Philadelphians here, but--the steak sandwich I had in Philadelphia
was just as delicious (not more delicious) as the ones I get here. (I
didn't get cheese whiz, where we went offered cheese whiz, american or
provolone, and I got the provolone)

I think, by now, Philadelphia can claim the invention of the cheese
steak, but you can get the real deal anywhere , if they take the time
to use good ingredients and do it right, meaning on the grill.

Mind you, I'm not talking about Subway's steak and cheese sandwich.
That's not the real deal. Pre-cooked "steak" warmed in the microwave
so the cheese melts? That may be a steak and cheese sandwich, and it's
one of the tastier offerings at Subway, but it's not a "Philly Cheese
Steak".
And they don't call it that, so they're ok.

Never heard of Jersey Mikes, but I'd have to be starving to eat at either
Subway or Quiznos. Now, a good Italian deli is another matter. They have
_real_ meats, cheeses, and breads.

Mary, my first taste of a Jersey Mike's sandwich was in New Jersey. A
friend and I were going to the nude beach at Sandy Hook, so we stopped
at a Jersey Mike's and asked if they could make us a sandwich for the
next day. They opened early that morning, we picked up our Italian
sandwich and we went to the beach. This sandwich was so good we went
back to Jersey Mike's to get another one.

Did you know they have a Jersey Mike's in Houston on Kirby?

Not every place in Philly makes a good cheesesteak (and getting worse every
year) but there are some very good ones around the country now. I like the
ones from Papa Gino's. They come as close as any I've ever had when I lived
in Philly. Good bread is important though, not some of the Wonder Bread
types of rolls that are very popular now.

Yep! That's the only JM's I've ever been to (and the only one I know of in
the Houston area). My hubby is from Jersey, and he loves JM's, too (he's
only been to the one in Houston as well).

Ahh.. Brings back memories. There used to be a wonderful local ma/pa
italian market and deli near where I worked in the 60s and early 70's.
They had the best subs I ever ate. They closed th market in the late
70's but due to the popularity of the subs, they sold the sub shop as
a franchise. The food was not the same under the new owners. compared
to the original owners food, I couldn't eat the new subs. They were
completely different. Still, the food was better than most fast food
and, even if the old patrons no longer could eat it, the new owners
made good business from new patrons who had never tasted the original
owners subs.

I have yet to find a sub shop that matches the food at that Italian
market and deli.

Subway's stuff always reminds me of styrofoam...it's truly "fake" food...no
