reply saying something like he was okay, thanks for asking. Polite but no
real info. The next time I tried to check on him the email bounced back as
undeliverable. And alas, I lost his snail mail address

You must be referring to Archon. As far as I know K3 never went to
Sacramento to visit anyone; he was entirely focused on his little boy in
Maine the last times he posted here.

I do have to extend grateful thanks for Kendall sending me fiddleheads.
They don't grow down here and he and his son went out and picked and cleaned
about 5 pounds of them to cold pack and send to me along with some recipes
just so I could try them! Granted, I had problems with the post office not
understanding "perishable". But the fiddleheads were delicious!

He unfortunately a few years back got himself tangled up (both online and in
real life) with a certain California - based wack - a - doodle who used to
post here.

Of course the wack - a - doodle's friend (a current regular on this group)
had to insert herself into the situation (this particular regular apparently
has no life and lives vicariously through this group) and Michael left
pretty much in disgust. Can't say I blame him...

I expect that after that experience he was not only put off by Usenet, but
by Americans and females in general...

He was a good guy and a good contributor, I too miss him.

Hi, all is well. A long time ago I started gradually moving more or
less over to alt.support.diet.low-carb while having less time online.
This year my girlfirend moved in with me and I went 6 months to UC
Davis, where the little time I had online was spent with my girlfriend
and a little on the diet NG.
I didn't get to meet Tammy, but I met Christine Dabney and Carol and
Crash.
In Davis I lived in a house with 2 women (for most of the time - the
last month I and one of the others moved to another similar home, where
2 guys were living), who didn't use the kitchen much, so I had it
almost to myself. They were surprised to see a person spend time on
cooking! It was an interesting experience to do the food shopping in
California. ChrisD showed me the tricks in Berkeley (much too late,
though). The Spanish table rocks! I do mainly mediterranian cooking
these days - my girlfriend lived in Spain for 10 years. My home in
Davis had a rosemary bush, a lemon tree and a fig tree.
When I got home I've been busy going to conferences, writing papers to
present at them and doing the research to write about. I've been to
Verina and Italy (I ate veal's brain, yuk! And horse
steak/stew/carpaccio and sausage, yummy!) and Leuven in Belgium (they
certainly like their fruits on savoury dishes).
Plus, my girlfriend is using her computer and the internet and I only
use it at work, where I haven't been able to use newsgroups (until now
that google features newsgroup activity instead of just archiving
them).

Now, who knows how to make the kalamata olive sourdough breads they
make in Berkeley? I tried to make my own starter, but it seemed to be
mouldy instead of bubbly...

I'm amazed you took notice! I exchanged emails with them at
the same time (and often - but not in the chat group). I
didn't know how "bad" it was until it was history. I knew
there was a problem - but I didn't get the real scoop from
either of them.... until it was completely over.

They were discrete and civil when speaking of the other
during their ordeal and after, so you can breathe a
collective sigh of relief.

Since when??? Last week?

I tried to use Google as a distance news group less than a
month ago and it was literally Hell on Wheels... it took at
least 24 hours to see my post & of course any response. So
I ended up using a view only server and posting from the
slow server... it was much less annoying that way.

Michael came for a visit the day before my birthday, so we had cake with
unsweetened real whipped cream (which he's addicted to). He gave me some
huge bottles of excellent shampoo and conditioner for a birthday gift. He
and I also visited the Spam Museum in Austin, MN. It has pretty much
become a requirement for anyone who visits us. That place is really fun!

Well Michael is a nice guy and he doesn't need to entangle himself again
with a person who has *severe* emotional and substance abuse issues as that
particular person did (has)...
