Default Who makes best quality placemats?

OK, this is sort of related to food: Who makes best quality placemats
(fabric, not vinyl!)? Best value?

I am a fast-food paper-napkins person, clueless in areas related to
cooking and elegant serving, and would appreciate some help. Need a set
of 8 for a gift. Should be nice, elegant, practical. Thanx.

Well, somehow elegant and practical seem nearly mutually exclusive to
me. Maybe not. There are placemats all over creation -- Linens 'n'
Things, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, Target, Kohl's, JC Penney, Sears,
Williams-Sonoma, Sur la Table, Macy's, Marshall Field's. You'll have a
zillion selections from which to choose. I wouldn't pay more than $8
for one, but that's me. You could easily spend $50 on placemats and
napkins for four places. Napkins don't have to be the same as the mats.

Remember John Kerry?
He now has a fabulous napkin shop on the north side of Boston for all the

Are you swimming in money? Do you want to impress or do you
just want a decent set of placemants?

Are you out in the boonies or can you make it into a
department store? You'll find a good selection in the
houewares department.

If you were willing to leave your house, you could go to

Since you don't want to leave the comfort of home, try
Linens & Things

Don't all (most of, any way) those places mentioned have websites?
Try www.(type in the store name, without any spaces).com

Good luck.

I do live in Chicago. I plan to shop online, so I guess the location
doesn't matter. However, I posted to chi.general just in case someone
points me to some fantastic sale at a great local outlet. :-) I am not
a regular in that group, but may have posted before, can't be sure.

I find bamboo placemats nice and practical. Look for mats that have
their ends bound with some fabric otherwise they start unravelling;
the ones bound with silk look elegant too. They wipe clean with a damp
sponge and look good forever. You should easily find these at most
Thai stores, I have seen them at Pottery Barn too.

Hope this helps,
K.

I have no idea. I suppose its a matter of personal taste,
but I have found nice place mats at dollar stores. You
can't get more practical than that, and elegance is
entirely in the eye of the beholder.

Spekaing of placemats, I have a related question. I am looking for a
couple f "educational" placemats for a young child. Could be alphabets,
math, science or another theme. Obviously, inexpensive and spill-proof
are big positives. Internet ok, but a local store in Chicgao would be
better. Any leads? Thank you.

Try the cheap stores -- KMart, WalMart, dollar stores. Or get a big
piece of construction paper, draw whatever you want on it, and laminate
it.

Go to your local science museum... you should be able to
find many of the placemats depicted above in their gift
shop.

Do you have a Discovery Store or Nature Company nearby?
There's another chain too, but I'm blanking on the name
right now. I'd just call first.

Teacher supply stores have a lot of interesting
things that might work, or as Melba
suggested-putting something (from there)together
and laminating it.

No such thing as "educational" placemats unless you're looking to raise
parrots. A stack of blank construction paper and two Crayolas (one for you)
will develop IQs far more efficiently than any copy cat stencil.

As I am a light eater, I find that sushi rollers (such as
this:http://www.quickspice.com/cgi-bin/So...html?E+scstore)
work very nicely in another role. A placemat!
