Default Cook-A-Long Saturday the 18th

We're getting together to do a cook a long on the RFC Channel on DEC
18th, in the early afternoon. The food will be a chicken Stew...this may
change and we haven't picked a particular recipe yet either. Interested
parties should take part in the recipe selection that will take place all
this remaining week on the channel (after 6pm Standard Time). So far we
have high hopes Nancy, Jill, Chris, Pam, Damsel, Kilikini, Boli will be
in attendance, all others are more than welcome to join. The more cooks
the merrier!

For those who don't know what a Cook-A-Long is. A group of people decide
on a basic recipe and we cook it all at the same time (in seperate
locations) while chatting on the channel, we usually mess with the recipe
(the fun part) and compare the changes we make. This is a fun, cooking
experience (well at least to me).

I'd like to join the party... - what time zone exactly is 'Standard Time'
in the US (so I can adjust my plans accordingly)? And where could I find
the channel?

We do it 3 -4 times a year, usually when I, Nancy or Chris twist a few
arms...It is hard to organize...to get concenus.

There are also pair cook-a longs where 2 or more people decide to cook
together and others just drop by to chat while it happens. I've cooked
stromboli and tortillia soup with Nancy, and a excellent Bread Salad with
the Standard irc parcipiants. But this being the Holiday Season we
decided to do a totally open one kinda a RFC IRC Xmas party type dealie.

Nobody follows the actual given recipe...we all add ingredients and
seasonings not called for, Compare changes and get a better feel for the
food, learn a few things, plus laff it up a bit.

Standard time? well I erred I meant Central Time...(my time zone) Chicago
Time.

If you have mIRC or another irc client it is found at this server
irc1.penguinpowered.ca thru irc5.penguinpowered.ca

Channel name is #Rec.food.cooking

there is also a browser link which I don't have the address to, but
hopefully someone who does will post.

You don't need to specify a number. Simply irc.penguinpowered.ca will get
you there.

Sorry, I've misplaced that one, too. Rosie M. and Karen have it, though.

And this time, I am going to take pictures of mine, the prep, finished
dish, etc, as I go along...and post them on Webshots. Then I will
give the URL to anyone interested.

We came upon the idea of a chicken stew of some sort, since Kilikini
needs to keep costs down for a bit. Chicken is cheap for the most
part, and stews can help stretch our food dollars. Kilikini has never
made a stew, and we thought it would be fun to do something slow
cooking...
Not only Kilikini is watching her dollars: a bunch of us are..and
since it is winter, stew seems like a good choice.

Anyone got any good suggestions for us? We will be exploring
recipes/ideas later tonight...

I am personally thinking that something with chicken thighs would be
really good...

Chicken Cacciatori (sp) comes to mind, and what could be easier?
I always make that with the thighs. Add sausage or not.

or something along these lines:

http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/re...s/views/102665

(a 4-fork rated chicken stew with tomatoes and beans from Bon Appetit).

I'd go for something spicy, too

I need something simple as I cannot get the ingredients for myself,
but I don't think we all have to make the same chicken stew, is
that okay Alan?

I'm guessing (no, almost positive) that Crash is going to want dumplings,
so I'll make a gravy-based recipe. I've never made chicken stew in my
entire life.

I love chicken cacciatore! AND it's not expensive! Wish I could throw in
mushrooms. My mom always made it with whole chickens cut up, a can of
tomatoes with liquid, red wine, chopped garlic, tomato sauce, onion, bay
leaf, basil, oregano..............and let it simmer until the meat is
falling off. I've even thrown in some shrimp in the past in addition to the
chicken.

I'd be up for the cacciatore....................yeah. I usually put it over
pasta, but you low-carbers, like Wayne, can always do the spaghetti squash.

So far I vote

#1 Chicken Cacciatore
#2 Chicken Stew

I wouldn't think we'd have to make the same one, no. But the recipe he
posted the link for would go over well with my hubby, I think. Hmmm,
chicken cacciatore or stew?

Sounds like a plan, though I don't care for dumplings. Had a bad
experience as a kid.

Ron says America's Test Kitchen had a nice chicken stew.

That reminded me of something a friend told me years ago. She had cooked rabbit
stew and made dumplings to go with it. He daughter (7 years old at the time)
said I don't mind eating rabbit but do we have to eat the fur too?"

I think chicken catch is a stew, but I'm most assuredly not trying to
tell anyone else what to make, I promise.

Oh, man... the 18th? I have to go out to dinner on the 18th
- shoots, that's a great cook along idea!

<whinebitchmoanandcomplain>

Hmmmm. I think I'll join in anyway and serve it Sunday.
It's much fun to pass up!

Sorry about just leaving without a "fair thee well" the
other day. We're remodeling our master bath and I needed to
talk to the workmen. By the time I got back you all had
left.

I feel so out of sync - it's hard to catch anyone "home"

NOW you're talking my language! LOL!

My favorite recipe is based on the Betty Crocker cookbook
<circa 1970ish> Chicken Fricassee (with dumplings, btw).
I've posted it here a couple of times over the years because
it's so good and sooo easy.

Alt binary food was suggested as well.
Seems we have a split house, Some want American Chicken Stew, some
Cacciatore, and some
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/re...s/views/102665

So by everyone being a little flexible we will be making Stew, some will
make a Italian chicken Stew (cacciatore), some will make stew
with dumplings and some will make it with white beans. (I still have
hopes of getting nanners to forsake cacciatore for the white bean
recipe).
